"It May Cost Quite A Bit..."

Given the recent news with Oculus and price, I thought this video is really telling.

Also, note the date the video was uploaded.

It's best to wait a couple years for the prices to come down.  There's really no rush to get one right away, since the software still needs to catch up.  Sure, there's some AAA games right now, but there's still not enough to justify the price.

    Here's a list of compatible games.  https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/wiki/compatible_all

There isn't many that i would be interested in, if compared to a console such as PS4 or Xbox One.

Personally, i think VR is best suited for other things, such as movies, documentaries, interactive storytelling, building, learning, A.I. projects, etc.   It just seems like the gaming market will dominate the scene.

What i don't understand is why people think these VR sets are adding anything we don't already have or can have in our games?
Like watching this video, there is NOTHING there we need a VR set to pull off.
Then in game you see these hands with no arms lmao,so any immersion you feel it is adding is totally lost .
That bridge scene,we got tons better than that in the one Bridge scene i played in COD a couple years ago.

You just have to experience for yourself I think.

I'm personally really interested in the tech (augmented reality, too). Though I will wait it out for multiple reasons, one of which is first gen growing pains / bugs.

It adds depth perception, which makes melee combat functional, and ultimately makes FPV a viable option for MMORPG developers.  VR sets will literally usher in a whole new sub genre of MMORPGs if not completely replace the old ones.

You know something is doomed to fail the moment someone says it will "usher in a whole new" anything, unless it happens to involve an actual usher.

this is why I am saying it sounds like this device would be good for Mall experiences.

From my understanding the 12' space can be linked to another HTC Vive for even a larger space. thus just like there is a movie theater in ever mall, perhaps there will be large VR rooms you pay to play in

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Completely replace the old ones? Do you realize how much market presence would be required for that to even become a running thought in the industry?

With VR, I think they really need to get first person right. It's been like this or ages, and I've accepted that it was due to limitation of having to compete for viewable space on screen, but honestly, no more disembodied floaty head = FPS.

When you move, even slightly IRL, you catch glimpse of your shoulders/chest/arms/hands. You can (obviously) see for yourself, just stand up and stand still, move slightly, walk, run. You don't *just* see everything in front of you, you see parts of your body moving. VR has the unique capacity to finally overcome the flat monitor limitation that FPS has had to deal with since always. This has been why FPS has always been immersion breaking for me, my brain just can't stop thinking "omg why the hell am I a floating pair of eyes?

Which is exactly what I keep saying over and over again !

Don't buy a VR headset without trying a DEMO !

What you "imagine it must be like" is almost certainly wrong.

A monitor or TV screen gives you a window through which you view the game world.
A VR headset puts you IN the game world...

VR sets are hardware and a technological leap over monitors (at least in the case of gaming).  This means there is no need for market presence, since they simply replace the old technology.  I doubt every game will strictly use VR, since there are probably numerous types that work without it, but MMORPGs that want to incorporate functional melee combat will have no other choice.
