Ok some might not think i'm fair but they really don't know me,i am just straight up honest in my opinions.
The game "play" does sound good to promising, don't like graphics that low end,i can accept more in line with FFXi or even WOW but no cartoony stuff.
First i try to look at the big picture because obviously we have little to go on aside from a concept which i admit sounds solid,no complaints there.
The big pictures is this,1 year obviously that means a lot of automation and as mentioned no hand scripted work.
So i see this as basically Landmark once again,a large generated world with a couple automated systems which are similar to Age of Empires.Example generate maps with more mountains, some with more trees some with more desert or water, yes we get that design aspect as a fact in this article.
Is that a bad thing,no not necessarily i have stated many times i want a AOE type game design. There is a problem missed here however which again is good and bad.Allowing players to create their own worlds is FUN but not practical. This means lots of empty servers and for a long term goal game that is not a good thing. What it ends up looking like is all those "illegal" private servers you see out there that very few play on.
You want to build a game that brings all the players together, especially if you are going to be auto generating large land masses, you don't want servers of 30/50/70 players like we see in some games now.
On the gods concept again already done in Everquest but not many seemed to care about the concept.A few Asian games already doing this as well as did sort of DDO.
Another problem is as i pointed out with WS ,if you go for low poly graphics there is no eye candy and in a VIDEO game you NEED that.Example housing if any will ever exist, how can you enjoy a cheap looking house or furnishing? How can you enjoy your character if it looks like pixels, how can you enjoy your gear or your weapon.
There is a reason all these shallow Asian games aim for over sized weapons and glowing gear and great looking characters,it is because that eye candy is a big attraction to gamer's.What is the first thing people said about BDO "looks amazing" nobody cared weather the game was any good, many were already on board just from looks alone.
So personally i like his ideas but in reality, this is a low budget design and like all others will feel like one as well and importantly look like one.The reason he is so willing is because this is a VERY low risk design, same reason we see so many of these low budget games,it costs very little effort to make them.

Wait this is the game Smedly always wanted to make. Is it $60 buy the box with $20/month subscription and a pay to win cash shop?
Actually, it's a $20 purchase (or $50 for collectors edition, which iirc is all out of game stuff like a soundtrack and guide), no sub, and no microtransactions.

and, like H1Z1, will never be completed.
oh and by the way, I dont think 7 days to die got that much money in TOTAL than what he is asking to Start.

Could very well be fun. The big deal for me is the control given back to the player. You can host the game yourself. This has become a lost tech in pc games with most control stripped from you. Even most single player games refuse to allow you to simply play with some friends and your friends alone.
What I found extremely silly from the KS intro video was Smedley saying you can host a game for 100's or 1000's of your friends. Who the fuck has 1000's of actual friends? I am assuming he means Facebook-like friends which are as much a friend as the Starbucks counter person who serves you coffee every day if you are into that sort of thing. Now allowing like-minded communities to grow and get to know each other ... that is more the key.
AI might be the stand out. The lack of true AI in games is my most frustrating issue in games. If the game industry doesn't hire most of the AI developers coming out of college, it will have completely lost touch of where this industry could go. It is obvious it has already lost touch as for 15 years we've seen little to no advancement in games other than graphics. I don't even consider server tech an advancement because the end result was not the actually add anything new for the player other than shrinking worlds and dividing players apart from each other. Apparently this game forgoes even graphics lol.
If companies won't set up multiple server types for all types players I applaud the attempt to let players host mmos. For me this is the industry change we need. What social features this game has is unknown to me but communities need control over their existence and developers have ignored this for far too long.
Least he is an established developer, even if he is a bit of crap shoot for success. I just think KS and crowd funding as a whole should be banned until proper consumer protection laws can be put in place.
Pretty sure if a restaurant opened up and took your money for a meal, then came back 4h later and said they couldnt make it, but would be keeping your payment, it would be shut down and its owners put in jail asap.
We really need to get rid of these old ass, out of touch law makers if we are going to get prompt protection laws for any form of digital industry. They dont have the skill set, understanding or obvious ability to make laws about this stuff. They are just too old and their world doesnt exist anymore, they should not be making laws for it.

oh this makes me want to scream!!!!!!!!!!!
1. hosting your own server in the Early Access titles is...no has...become rather popular and common place.
2. It appears he watches trends in Early Access closely and then just takes that Idea to people who are terrified of Early Access and says 'yeah but I am John and you have no idea how I rip you off so this is a clever idea of mine and you will never know it because you dont follow early access titles at all...me win'

Probably an unpopular opinion, given the way these forums view Smed, but I love the artstyle. I wish the death was more permanent though... but I suppose I can forgive the design decision because even I have to sometimes leave the PC quickly only to return to some skeletons attacking me mercilessly.
How they are trying to sell the world speaking to you should be very intriguing if they pull it off. I'll buy it on release and cycle it in between playing Diablo II and Path of Exile.

I in no way claimed he originated the idea nor excluded the current trend toward it.
Scream away if you must. Presumptions are rampant on these forums and I am used to it. Let the hate flow through you.
If they did this in a tasteful isometric Ultima Online/Ultima 8 style game I could get behind this. As interesting as some of the design elements, Smed is asking for a lot of money for a game that could probably be built straight out of RPGmaker (shudder).
Game sounds interesting - from the way gods shape the world design to taking your hero from a living breathing population. Look forward to exploring this when it launches.
When I look at his campaign I'm amazed that this is made by someone that was the CEO of SOE.
He asks for 800k on kickstarter but with the way they made their pledges they won't reach the goal even if they sell out all $25, $50, $100, $150 and $300 pledges. Making a quick calculation that will make $1.2M if they sell out all pledges.
There's a lot of interesting ideas but they really priced themselves out of what people are willing to pay for a kickstarter with pixel arts.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
One thing I wanna know... if players can play on their own servers, where does player data get stored? On their own computer? Seems like it would be easy to cheat.

How do you know it's mobile? Not seeing anything about any platform whatsoever on the kickstarter.
People that like permadeath can host such a server and People that don't can host a regular server.
Win-Win in my book as it will attract a hell lot more players, instead of just a handful diehards.
/shrug
John Smedley needs a KickStarter? He can't find investors? What does that tell you?
Seriously, WTF......
Smed says he has 1 mill of investors money and they need another 800k. Still not interested in this game.
might back this, gonna wait for an actual playable demo/alpha.
Why not making different rulesets?

You can set different rulesets on your own servers
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
