I really don't get it. Given the raw power of today's hardware coupled with the capabilities of 5 year or even 10 year old game engines like HL2's Source engine, why the fuck would anyone want to make/play something so fucking ugly.

I just don't get it. Minecraft, may be the perfect sandbox for some but it's FUGLY as fook. There's just no need to destroy a perfectly good game idea with shitty 16 bit graphics. It's not arty, or hip, or retro. It's just shit old 16 bit pixelated crap.

I can understand the guy behind Minecraft working alone trying to make something but a company with investors or a kickstarter? Inflicting this shit on a paying public?

It's one thing to say gameplay over graphics. It's something else to make something that looks 20+ years out of date.
It's because it's an artistic choice pure and simple.

You are thinking along the lines of "making things better looking = progress".

And while there is some truth to that, there is a certain sense of aesthetics to earlier games. Besides the fact that they don't have to deal with the higher cost of creating "better looking" assets/world.

But is is an aesthetic choice. If you watch the video it does look better than the screen shots but it is a 2d throwback to earlier games. Keep in mind that there are players who questioned why recent game releases that hearkened back to the Baldur's Gate days were even done. Well, there is a different aesthetic and feel to those games. Same with this.

My question is not "why they picked this look/feel" but whether or not they really think there is a market for it?

This is not my thing to be sure and though there are people in this thread who seem excited, are there enough people? But who knows, maybe there are.

lol .. so 2D 16 bit graphics .. and *another* fantasy setting? I guess there is no more new ideas, even in KS.

And no, i probably won't even waste time on this game, if they pay me to play it.

So basically it's a semi-randomly generated 16-bit RPG with optional multiplayer and no content?

    I don't get it.
  • ShaighShaigh Member EpicPosts: 2,150
At least they revamped the pledges for the game. However, it does feel like they just got started on the game and their 12 months timeline feels like another case of ambitious kickstarter that will be delayed for at least a year.

I bet unique stat system is main stat + stam as secondary.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

So if you ascend - and become a god, you say that we don't lose our character, but are we still able to play them there after, or would one have to start over ?

Not gonna happen. Smedley would have been better off keeping his mouth shut and hiding his involvement with the project, letting others do the talking. There's simply too much animosity toward him for any project he leads to be crowd-funded.

The game sounds decent, but I'm really tired of companies using 'pixel art' as an excuse to skimp on the graphics. 2D graphics can be amazing (Pillars of Eternity, D:OS, etc.), and pixel art can be thematically appropriate, but enough is enough. People don't spend good money on powerful hardware to play games which look like they were made for SNES, or even NES or SMS.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

I really don't know why people hate John Smedley so much. Like he was the sole person responsible for every bad thing SOE ever did and they didn't like. Like he didn't have a big corporation expecting big profits hanging over his head.

He actually said on his AMA today on Reddit that he doesn't want to do any micro transactions at all not even cosmetics because he never liked doing them at SOE but he kind of had to. He's obviously a real passionate gamer and is trying to get back to making a games he really believes in. And anyone who can't see that is just blinded by stupidity and rage over your goddamn NGE. Get over it already!

i wonder if people exploiting will have to make a video apoligizing to appease the ilustrious lord smedley lol.

The fact that he has to do a kickstarter is a sign about who smedley is in the gaming industry in smeds mind hes the speilberg of video games in reality hesa mediocre overrated incompetent idiot. Good luck funding your nintendo gameboy zelda ripoff /smh $64,813 pledged of $800,000 goal HAHAAH 800 grand for "that" yeah good luck...

Same, I like the entire concept but the lack of art/graphics is a cost and/or production factor, not a design choice, even if that is how it's pitched. Smed knows MOST people don't require graphics, but I do, I can't stare at that for days on end, no way.

Also, I am sure the combat will be similar to Trove or MOBA or something, if even that complex. Or maybe it would be turn-based? I am hoping it will be more than say.. Gauntlet. (point and shoot)
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

John Smedley needs a KickStarter? He can't find investors? What does that tell you?

    Seriously, WTF......

Which tells you what a joke he currently is in the industry, and what being an "industry veteran" is actually worth.

No one knows the hacks in an industry, like the other people in that industry.

That none of them will touch this effort says all anyone should need to know.

What it suggests to me is that Kickstarter is being used as a sales tool.

Earlier question I (rhetorically) asked: what happens if they don't raise 800k, will the game not be launching in October? No suggestion of that however which makes me ponder whether "enough" funding is lined up - maybe from JS himself - and that Kicker is a way of building "momentum" "hype" "excitement" ... and generating sales.

When JS left DBG people on the EQN forum said (paraphrase) "no loss, doesn't do anything for the game". And my response to that was that is that JS would have been the EQN champion inside the company. Like him or loathe him JS is good at "championing games" and he is doing that here. (And maybe things haven't always gone to plan / have been "oversold" perhaps hence the loathing.)

Sounds cool, and I don't have any hate towards Smed. But I am a total graphics queen. If it doesn't have top of the line graphics I can't play it. I did play the shit out of 2d games back in the day, and I played Nexustk for years. But that ship has sailed.

    Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge
Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.

Only one problem, where Smed goes a group of haters that made him leave DB games will follow and be a thorn in his side troll. They'll grief the game just to spite him.

I never played SWG so I am not part of this rage.
However, we are talking about a man here who promised the people of SWG "to build them a game to come home to" just to give them a zombie shooter game.

If anything this man represents empty promises and blatant lies.

As a former original SWG fan, this is a big nope for me. Even if I wasn't a SWG fan, the whole Kickstarter fad turns me off. To me it stinks of a former CEO out of work (due to the infamy he's earned) and is looking for a way to make a quick buck by getting gullible gamers desperate for a new and good game to cough up their money so he can pay rent on his luxury car and big house. Oh by the way, he'll throw in a low budget game for your effort, because he needs to produce something for that rent you just paid. Why not a game an average developer could make quick, easy, and cheap? More money to line his pockets, right?

    Just a few observations....

    - the weakest part of the project are also the strongest>> "low"Graphics in 2d
    - Faster to develop and create gigantic and complex worlds and systems
    - can run in older systems
    - if u are not a graphic whore its always a win-win situation
    - u can host ur own game and play pnly with ur friends

    having said that... jonh smedley

I'm trying to understand... Is this a MMORPG? Will there be official servers that we can call our home that are always open or will be constantly switching servers?
  • Xav_MMOXav_MMO Member UncommonPosts: 49
FWIW, they added a couple more pledge tiers. One of which is a simple, cheap, $15 for just the game tier (digital, obviously).

After Crowfall setting a new standard for me with kickstarter games, this game looks like a bad investment. I don't see the appeal visually or conceptually with so little information about what HS has to offer. Why does a game with low visuals and generally unambitious concept need to raise the same amount that Crowfall did, and has far less to offer those that back it?
They either rushed to kickstart this or didn't do their research.

content is king and the biggest enemy, by an ENORMOUS margin to content is graphics.

Why was EQ able to expand more content in their expansions than most games release with? Because it was MUCH faster to pump out the art for it.

I'll be interested based on the permadeath system. if you could easily lose everything, I'm not interested. If you just have to earn your way back to life, then Im on board.

Sorry, you lost me at Smedley... been burned by this guy too many times. I hope it turns out to be good, but I won't be playing it.

Seems like not making it multi-platform is a mistake. I would probably play this game on my tablet or phone quite often, doubtful I would play on my pc though.

I cant believe I'm saying this but I agree this game just seems out of place on PC and right at home on tablets.
