Yeah I'm not gonna back this one, but will keep an eye on it. I want to see how the MMO side of it works. Letting people host their own servers tends to splinter the community over hundreds of servers, in bunches of 10-100 people. For a game that's supposed to have a massive world, 100 people playing on one server is just way too little. Needs to be in the thousands.
Also interested to see what kind of sandbox elements they will include. Will the game have player factions? That can fight other player factions? And conquer and claim land & build property on it?
John Smedley is a POS. Anyone that donates to this kickstarter is really stupid. I'm sorry but not many people I despise more in MMORPG gaming than John "POS" Smedley and Brad McQuaid. They both have done nothing but ruin MMORPGs as we know them. Everything they touch and I mean everything turns to crap.
I would not put it past these two to collect a lot of Kickstarter cash and produce vaperware. They are both that low of character.
MMORPG.COM - I'm surprised you guys still support John and Brad when you know well what they have done to gaming and how many lives they have hurt in the process. If John has left SOE then I see no reason for you to care about supporting him. You should honestly be ashamed.
Looks and sounds interesting, but I avoid kickstarter games even if they would be amazing because I could always buy them later once I am assured of the quality of the title I am getting.
Another dev trading on his name for a kickstarter campaign... at least its 2D so we know they can probably whip something up eventually.
I'm starting to get a bit turned off by this Kickstarter stuff, what have we got thus far for it? Games in perma alpha? Middle aged guys who made games in the 80's and 90's with ego's so big noone will work with them...
I wish Smed would have completed his vision of Next and called it Neverquest After and just destroyed Daybreak/Sony... I'd at least have gotten behind that.
If it was more than a $5 discount on the game I would bite. I can't see paying only $5 less then someone who waits for a completed final product. If you want me to invest early in something that may never pan out you better be looking at a substantial discount.
Interesting way to avoid the commonplace 'stale endgame' problem with MMO games. Have perma-death to make the leveling process challenging, then offer an 'ascension' option to players who reach max level, with an opportunity to influence the future of the world.
It's clear being 16bit and 2D this game will have no issues being run on Tablets, Laptops, Desktops and Smartphones in the near future. Especially the next gen stuff released between now and 2020. It's a good move for a game like this to run on multiple devices. It's the way to go when you're playing in the 16 bit realm with stylized art.

Seriously, WTF......
You apparently didn't bother to look into this.
It was already stated that they already have 1 mil in private investing, and the KS will help them without seeking a publisher or other private funding. If they don't get the KS then that is what they will have to do.

I backed the project and I do not believe I am stupid thank you I like the project and what kind of game it is. I like Patrick Rothfuss and the list of developers with solid gaming talent is very good. Better than almost any other KS game I have seen. Yes Smed is involved but to me $25 was a risk worth taking for a game that appeals to me in many ways.
I wish you all the luck friend. John has destroyed anything he has touched and I would not donate $25 to his funeral.
