I think, if there is any hope for varied gamestyles done by indie devs, graphical sacrifices need to be made to keep costs down, 2d is one day to do it
Some of my all time favorite MMORPGs / ORPGs have been 2D Tile based games ( Kingdom of Drakkar , Legends of Kesmai ). If the world , ambiance , sound , systems etc are on point I am all over 2D games. Heck just throw some HD textures on Drakkar / Kesmai with some updated animations ( what little animation they have ) and I am in heaven.
I don't see a problem with 2D MMOs. The biggest issue is getting people to try the game with so many games already in existence. In theory making a 2D game should allow a developer to devote more time to making large amounts of game mechanics similar to how you hear people talk about all the different complexities of mud based games before there were graphical games. 2D games are more like watching a play from up in the sky. 3D games can have a bit more immersion since you can play from the characters point of view. None the less I used to get immersed in 2D video games like Final Fantasy (NES/SNES) and later the Baldur's Gate series. Ultima Online is probably the best example as it allowed great freedom of choice in terms of what you wanted to do in game. I'm not sure I would play a pixelated game though. It would at least need Castle Crasher level 2D graphics.
I gotta admit, I have a soft spot for 2-D. As many of my all time fav RPG's were back in the olden days (SNES and such). I'm looking forward to trying both Hero's Song and Dragon of Legends.
I wouldn't play "2D" if they were the last games on Earth.
Yes you would.
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.
When your head is stuck in the sand, your ass becomes the only recognizable part of you.
No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.
How to become a millionaire: Start with a billion dollars and make an MMO.
I'd sooner remove my eyes with a rusty spoon that play a 2D MMO. It's 2016, not 1996. If you want to save on graphical resources that badly you just go with an isometric view.
If Smed is going 2d it's because: A. It's a design decision based on an artistic style B. He's barking mad C. He's a clueless fuktard with less idea about games design that a rancid hamster D. All of the above
I don't think it's the future of mmo's. Seems like it will mostly be relegated to low-budget and indie games. Look at Steam for example, there's a ton of 2D indie games available on there. It's a much more viable option when the budget is small.
Nah, 2d isn't the future. But it is smart for some game studios to make a 2d game here and there again, for old times sake (and for Kickstarter scams) lol.
When all is said and done, more is always said than done.
You can make a different sort of game (long tested and proven) in 2D. Shorter development times are the big thing I imagine though.
I am perfectly ok with a 3D mmorpg looking 10 years old if stylized and built upon concept and game play. Development time would therefore be quicker and that is key to a living world mmorpg.

I agree with that but I don't think many want to make graphical sacrifices.

No, "2D" sprite based is not the future. For one thing a lot of what looks "2D" is actually 3D. It's just that 2D isn't dead and isn't going to die anytime soon. It's a viable presentation method.
I think we need some space in the mmorpg game universe for experimentation with game play. Pushing the bleeding edge of graphics isn't as interesting as the bleeding edge of game mechanics.

Agree with this. Loved link to the past. Beef up the 2D graphics and if the game design and gameplay is good, I will play it.
I need choices and challenges in a game.
also, 2D would be much easier to have a builder type game for players to create levels or zones.

They are not mutually exclusive. Both should be pushed. Why settle for only one of the two?
On an optimistic note, I think 2d may bring designers back to feature implementation and away from content creation. I'd like to see more interesting and unique games in the future, because the recent past is full of copies of a diamond in the rough. If graphics take a hit to enable designers to bring in more feature rich gameplay, that's fine with me. I only hope that they are able to create unique, fun games - if the games are no good, then I suppose it matters not what the game looks like at all.

Give me fun interesting gameplay and quality visuals and I'll pay&play.
Look on the bright side, 5 years from now they'll probably start working on the new 3-D MMO's !!

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
