A few noobie questions.

Liking the game so far just have a few questions.   Will I be able to get keys and unlock seals or should I be saving them like there's no tomorrow?  Should I be upgrading my starting purple weapon and when should I stop?  If I shouldn't be upgrading the starting purple weapon then what weapon should I start upgrading?

Short answer is yes, to all your questions. You will get some items for free, from quest rewards or daily spins or whatnot, can be bought off the AH, or can be made with crafting. 

As for the weapons, and all of your equipment, gear upgrades in this game is very very linear. You take your item, upgrade it half way, use another (usually dropped item) to "break through", then finish upgrading it. Even late game when you start getting "Legendary", it follows the same principle, with your old item being an item used in the new item to upgrade it. 

You should always use the purple items. At no time should you be using blues or greens or whatever, those are only there as sacrificial items to upgrade the purples. Even crafted equipment (weapons/jewelry) are only used to sacrifice to your real items. Its why there is no market for crafted weapons.
