Xbox1 - whatz backwards compatible?

Got Xbox1 today (yes late but I'm a pc person).  Was told my old games will play but I get confused info.  Now I hear it's a truncated list.  So what, do I just keep sticking in my old 360 disks to see what will work?  What happens if it's not converted yet?  If my games are not on their convert list how long do I have to wait until they get to them?  Sry, console newb.

they slowly are adding to the list of BC games but so far it looks like only the most popular games are coming first. There is a list with about 100 games so far.. can you believe skyrim wasn't in the first batch?

Internet opinion is they're ignoring votes and adding w/e they want.  Still, I voted.  I didn't bother voting for Skyrim because it's already at the top so it doesn't need my vote and I own it for PC on Steam as part of the Nexus modding community.
