MMORPG.com shouldn't exist

Ok, so maybe the title is a bit harsh. And I do love this place and all its titles, news, and organization.

But! It is sites like this that promote the stale trend of MMOs. That fact that we even have discussions like "sandbox vs. themepark" or "which MMO has the best X" is kinda depressing.

I had this thought when I recently clicked over to check out an upcoming MMO. My thoughts were fairly generic about it. "I wonder what kind of classes it will have. Will it be standard MMO combat, or twitch? What kind of crafting will it have?"

These things shouldn't even be questions. MMOs should be far more diverse than we're allowing them to be. In a perfect world, I would love for an MMO to be announced and for me to have absolutely no idea what it will be like, how it will play, or what features it will have.

MMOs have become predictable and bland.

I agree with your overall thoughts about the state of MMOs.  Not so much about the site, I like the site and been here off and on for years.  Mostly I wish there were an MMO complex enough that we'd have to spend years analyzing and experiencing it all and even then we'd not be finished.

I have no issues with these sites. They provide info about games and it's ultimately up to me whether said game is interesting or not.
The forums, on the hand...well.  lol
Probably has to do with the fact there only so many new games coming with the needs of some to post 24/7 about anything and everything. Who knows?!

I don't really see how that is MMORPG.com's problem. Just like all those generic games being pumped out, if enough people are playing them, then its moot whether you like them or not.

When people stop playing them, they will stop being produced. When those games lose popularity, this site will cover the things that are popular.

More appropriate title would have been:  "MMOs are predictable and bland"

Yeah, that MMO already exists, its called EVE, not many people like it, but I'm still going strong 8 yrs later

I liked Eve played it off and on for quite a few years and even had the requisite multiple accounts.  But sadly only ever had one friend join it and just never found quite the right fit corp wise.  Did have a lot of fun in the game though.  On the subject Eve if they made a new world, like a restart of the whole universe I would be there day one.

Yes, I know, it's not this sites fault. And like I said, I like this site. I just think it's sad that MMOs are so carbon copy that we can build a single site that covers them all in one fell swoop.

Not to nitpick, but isn't it close to 13 yrs? I loved also so this isn't to point how 'old' it is.  ;)

What is the alternative? A site that only covers special unicorn games that do not exist?

The genre is actually not that stagnant with Kickstarter and Steam early access (Rust, Ark) giving indie devs a way to get their games out there.

The mmorpg genre can barely sustain their own news / discussion sites as it is with massively getting axed and having to re-launch and this site covering single player games.

Still not the sites fault. As stated before it is the gamers and players that still play the bland that continues the trend.

With that said a million people like to eat donuts you will continue to make and sell donuts until the million people are tired of them.

What you fail to realize is mmorpg's are a genre.  Just like card games or board games.  They have thousands of different ones played many different ways but how many different ways can you draw a card?  You seem to be stuck on the fact that drawing a card is required instead of how many different ways there is to play.  Which is what a lot of gamers do when they see a new game.  They say oh this game requires you to draw cards from a deck its just another clone lets move along.  Then you can look at how many different games were invented from one set of 52 cards.  The same can be said of mmorpg's.  One set of 52 ideas combined in different ways and played according to different rules will create variety.  Yet somehow people ignore the fact that there is variety and just act like solitaire is the same go fish game they learned when they were 8.  Why?  Because they are using that same 52 card deck.
Are you onto something or just on something?
