I don't think an IP can make an MMO a success... but it certainly can make it a failure.

Let's say you are a die hard Game of Thrones fan... let's say they make an MMO around it... lets say on day two, they swap all the skins and environments for Game of Thrones with that of Hello Kitty.  Now the game is the same, only it's appearance is different.  Would it be a success or a failure purely because of a choice of skins/environments or would the underlying game be so awesome you could care less what IP it followed?

The core game mechanics are what is tired... not so much the visuals/story.

Great to hear that there are games in the works, but, I want a good MMO now. :)

A lot of recent games seem to be focused on the youth twitch players or click based interfaces, active movement based combat and basically games geared for young players. It seems there is a large crowd of players who prefer for slower paced tactical combat and far less clicky interfaces and they are less likely to be catered too. They forget, those same older players have money and are willing to part with it for the right games. I just hope some of these games in development will take this into account.

MMOs are dead let them die. Its all small server stuff with single player options taking over now. ARK, Life is Feudal, DayZ, etc. Yes Lif is coming out as an MMO but that will be a big failure just like every other free for all PvP full loot game has been. Yhr smaller hosted servers thrive because of rules and GMs/Admins who police them. MMO wont have that luxury. similar to ARK, which thrives because of mods and the same hosting rule sets that you can pick and choose from.

I just think people are tired of questing, but theyre also tired of the 'sand box' hard sell especially when there is nothing sandbox about the sand box games.

But even as good and free form as those games are and yes they are sand box, the limitations are very apparent. With no quest that means players have to invent their own content. Which is generally RP, PvP, or simply griefing and trolling random servers.

The ONLY MMO I would be remotely interested in and it failed years ago is Stargate, and it would need ot be MASSIVE, probably too big fr a developer to make. On the scale of the Star Wars galaxy (which they have failed miserably to deliver.

Star Wars should have about 30 planets you can visit with all the factions and diplomacy you can think of as well as different crafting styles. The main problem with all these companies is they dont knw ow how to make an MMO at least one that is indepth and gives you everything is should give you. Mostly because its too expensive to do it and the return isnt there.

Borderlands has the best lore and base to pull off an MMORPG. The setting is perfect where the player isn't a chosen one per say, they're just an ark/vault hunter in a world of other hunters/bandits. The skill system is a pretty solid base to expand and deepen. They have different classes to play on. They understand the loot system already. Crafting can be integrated especially with how crazy the weapon/shield system is. There's vehicles, I can see housing being a thing. All the pieces are pretty much laid out to create something pretty cool.

I know, right? But they scrapped the version 2K China was working on, saying it didn't look like it would be profitable, so I have a feeling they don't' have the stomach to make an MMORPG. 2K making it a China only MMORPG in the first place is what prompted me to look into starting a game studio in the first place.

If i were to make an online game it would be something like TF2.  Something were the comunity could add new maps relatively easy.  Not sure what type of game it would be,  but main thing would be to involve the comunity in making content.

I'd still have character customisation like a modern mmorpg.  I'd also have a town were you could just hang out and chat with people while not beeing shot at. And ofc. guilds or whatever they would be called.

I probably wouldn't make a big world.  95% of the world in mmorpg's theese days are just for levelling up and when you get to endgame it's never used again. Max level players sit in the big city and wait for groupfinder to pop.  I would skip the levelling game and fokus on "endgame" and on making the playerhub an interesting place to hang out.

Start relatively small and expand the city with more inns,  carnevals, shops and cafe's if the game takes off.  Add more maps and maptypes and make it easy for the comunity to create content.

I guess it would be a cross between a MOBA and an mmo of sorts.

This article makes me happy with hope. Between this and BDO in a month, I am feeling oddly optimistic!

The only game I'm waiting for is a true update for UO... until then, memories will have to do.

Tencent should adapt Monster Hunter Online for the west. It's not like they don't have the money to.

    That's all from me.

    Monster Hunter since '04!
    Currently playing: MHW & MHGU

I am pretty much certain i want a Fantasy game but i want it done right,i don't want any shallow leveling with linear questing, yellow markers over npc heads and i want EVERY level to have meaning and levels to come by very slowly.I am sick of games being a race to end game,to me end game is END of game,i am not interested anymore.
Point being i want the entire effort to go into the game NOT end game, not loot raiding,i could say no pvp but that doesn't take any effort anyhow, just keep the pvp out of my back yard lol.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Uff... I'm sick and tired of LoL, possibly because of how toxic its community is, but a League of Legends MMO sounds so incredibly appealing. Like... exploring varied lands like Shurima, Kumungu, the Plague Jungles... or visiting cities like Demacia, Piltover, Zaun or Ionia. Imagine taking a quest from Lux to go kill raid boss Darius. At the very least I'd buy it and try it out.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

I wouldn't want a Borderlands MMO. But if they did aa shared world shooter similar to Destiny or The Division. I'd be happy. When you think about how they do their characters. I think it would fit well being Destiny style. Characters would more or less be the classes. Bring back some of the previous ones, and come up with a few new ones.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

Under the right gameplay and meta goals I would certainly play a LoL MMO. Any lore nerd like me who has read the lore of the various champions (admittedly some only a sentence) knows it has the backstory and world to accomplish something large scale and "epic", similar to WoW's lore.

I read a rumour somewhere that Tencent could be using Riot as Western localiser for Lost Ark seeing as they are the Chinese publishers? A little far fetched but would be awesome if true! Would most likely see the game fair soon if correct.

Doesn't Cryptic have an unannounced project? To quote their site:

"Cryptic Studios is working on at least one top secret online free-to-play game project."

    For whatever that's worth.

But once you have players making their own content, they don't need video games.  There many things to do creatively in the real world that are more challenging and entertaining than a video game.

I think there should be an MMO with a class that has religious powers as their skills like 'Speaking in Tongue', 'Exorcism', 'Circumcision', 'Baptism', 'Abomination', and last but not least, who could forget...the Resurrection Zombies that came to life during the death of the lord!!!

wow, Riot seems to have a good times right now! I hope for some interesting game, not worry they mess it up, just give it a time and I am sure there will come something interesting !!

There's the untapped potential of the MMOFPS genre.  I'd like to see Blizzard put their StarCraft IP towards a sandbox open world FPS.  Or a Command and Conquer MMOFPS sandbox from EA. MMOFPS can be the ground level action of what you see in an RTS, but each unit is a player filling their role.

I'm hoping for a Diablo MMORPG from Bllizzard.

Although I'm semi-worried it would mean the end of the diablo-dungeoneering franchise as it did with the Warcraft RTS series. RIP best strategy game I've played.

How many copies sold for a particular MMO doesn't matter, what matters is how many are currently playing it. Look at Star wars: Battle Front, it sold millions of copies, but a few months in all but a couple. Maps are ghost towns. I can assure you that millions of PC players aren't playing ESO.

The amount of people participating in the gaming universe is far more now than their has ever been and with that comes more diverse likes and dislikes when it comes to gaming.

Games that make you want to come back day after day and keep you interested for years are a thing of the past. Gamers today don't have the patients for those type of games and companies are in to make a profit so they are going to create the games that todays gamer wants and that isn't games of old.

The best thing to do is leave single player games the way they are, single player. Add a co-op mode maybe, but nothing more.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

Best we can hope for imo is some sort of mmo light. Example would be if the next battlefield game came with character creation and a homebase for people to hang out when not on the battlefield. And a proper set of guild tools, or whatever guilds would be called.

To be honest i dont understand why noone have tried that yet.(maybe i missed it?)

Having said that ESO seems to be taking off rather well.  So maybe there's hope for some more fleshed out mmo's.  It takes alot more money to make a new big mmorpg than it would to make a light version "mmo" though.

My first thought, upon learning of Jeff Grubb going to Amazon Gaming Studios, was, "Wouldn't it be awesome if they come out with an MMO that is free for Amazon Prime members? That would be a great Prime perk!" :)

One i expect to see kill every one of these lame duck projects is MMOmagics Citadel of Sorcery. They are still working on the game despite the ignorant player base response back in 2013. Its going to be interesting to see how these Publishers and game designers try to scurry and scamper about to create a game that can even get close to what CoS is going to bring to the PC. Enjoy the low intelligence development that is synonymous with the current MMO model.

Me I am looking more toward the future of game design and none of the above listed have a glimmer of hope.

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT

Playing: The Secret World until Citadel of Sorcery goes into Alpha testing.

Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games

    Anticipating:Citadel of Sorcery
