[PRESS] - Chris Roberts calls people Armchair Developers!

MrSnufflesMrSnuffles Member UncommonPosts: 1,117
edited February 2016 in Star Citizen

"Now you have a million game designers, a million arm chair developers, a million CEOs [telling us what to do]," Roberts explained.

He is such a lovely person, calling people arm chair developers. Oh great Leader, show us armchair developers the way to the light!

---EDIT---

To all that think someone is offended and how calling people armchair developers is not a big deal:

1. He is running a crowd funding campaign for everyone not only for game developers.
2. According to him: "The most open development ever done in history of crowd funding"
3. You can't have "open development" and then complain about the people you invite to participate. He had to know in advance that they are not all going to be developers.
4. It is unprofessional.

I hope that settles the whole offended thing.

He tends to forget that these are the people who gave him the money so that he can do what he is doing.  That said, his backer's unquestioned blind faith and following have given him the confidence to say and do whatever he wants with no accountability or repercussion whatsoever.  They reap what they sew.

Am I the only person who is mortified at the constant back and forth from Chris Roberts?  In 2013 when confronted about feature creep/stretch goals adding to delays he had this to say:

"But with each new stretch goal unlocked, and new feature implemented, some are starting to worry that bloat is creeping into the game. With no real core gameplay yet, there's a worry that adding new features and game mechanics could get in the way of the actual game that everyone is waiting for.

    Chris Roberts doesn't agree.

"... we don’t commit to adding features that would hold up the game’s ability to go “live” in a fully functional state," he declared in his Chairman's letter announcing the new milestone.

    Source: http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/358547,chris-roberts-addresses-feature-creep-as-star-citizen-makes-20-million.aspx

    Now we have this:

"He explains that he could have done a better job informing backers that, as more money came in... the scope of the project expanded in turn.

    Source: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/star-citizen-creator-wishes-hed-explained-games-de/1100-6434856/

Holy Cow Chris, talk about saying whatever it takes to make sales.  When it could prevent people from donating due to the large delay "stretch goals will not cause a delay" but once you get called out for taking forever and you need an excuse it suddenly changes to "Stretch goals increased the size of the game and caused delays".

I dont know what makes me more angry, Chris Roberts saying whatever people want to hear or the big gaming sites/magazines giving him a free pass.  One legal threat to the Escapist is all it takes now a days to scare the gaming press.  What a sad state the gaming industry has found itself in.

He has demonstrably lied too many times now and it will only get worse this year. Not a single gam ing "journalist" has called him on his bullshit.

It's sad but we all knew for a while now that the gaming press suckles on the teet of publishers and developers.

Somehow, this game feels more and more like a scam with every article. This quote seems like a big red flag to me, and not sure how anyone can continue to support them after such a statement. It's not that he didn't communicate effectively, but that the project supposedly expanded to such a degree without the backers knowledge, and, for all we know, could be (most likely) an outright lie and they've just been mismanaging things to the point they're struggling to get the basic features in without running out of money. Or they just prefer to keep it hyped and sell ships to dumb people rather than continue full-blown development.

But this is just from an outsider casually watching this unfold.

The real problem is that SC's incompetence in managing this situation is no longer a revelation.  People have heard, and have pretty much accepted SC for what it is.  I doubt many people will be surprised if and when SC drops the hammer.  Backers will undoubtedly express anger, but they will hardly surprised.  SC backers are going along on fumes.  Theirs is one of hope, not of confidence.

Uh, yeah... welcome to any MMO ever.  Read the forums for any game and you will have people railing against 'idiotic' developers that can't program right - that break as many things as they code, and can't program as well as an intern.  Also how easy it would be to add some feature or another or to squash bugs.

I only peripherally follow SC, but this statement on its face is just the truth.

I'm not an outsider.  I bought in early on.  And I'm still waiting for the game I wanted.  Not this drivel that it's turned into.

Not a game where I have to leave my ship, fly into a space station, and have someone possibly steal my ship and leave me stranded.  Not some FPS POS.  Not some space sim where I have to run around 20 minutes just to get to a bay to ask for my ship to run 10 minutes to get to to then need to take off.  Why not add mandatory eating/sleeping/pissing while we're at it?

Realism.  It's not as fun when its reality.

I don't think we'll ever get what we asked for.  In fact, I'm thinking that even if it "does" ever show up it's just going to be like an arcade game, always asking for another .25 for one more shot.

He already admitted that they need to keep the people paying and the Marketing Machine running"

Roberts scoffs at the notion that the company will run out of money before the final game is delivered. "It's not going to happen. We managed our expenses based on the revenue we bring in [...] If I'm not bringing in $3 million or $2 million a month, we aren't going to have as many people working on it."

He wanted "unprecedented open development" and "listen to all the fans". Calling them armchair developers is insulting and unprofessional.

Maybe he should have thought about that bevor he ran his mouth, but we all know how good he is at that, right?

You'd figure with ~$110 mil in funding, this guy could afford a decent PR guy/team.

And their first bit of advice to CR would be: "Shut the F@@# up! Nothing good will come from yelling at the customers!"

And yes, people have a right to speak up about forking over big money and not seeing much resembling a coherent game, yet.

I thought Sandi Gardiner might have a degree in Public Relations. She is after all a Marine Biologist and a Business Administrator. Although no publications of here have ever surfaced or any proof of these degrees either.

She is also the best Marketing Manager since she was a little girl.

Funny how easily he can get a bunch of panties in a bunch.

I am a great magician! I will transform her outfit from a prison uniform to a pinstripe suit!

    0:22 Feeling a little stripey!
0:42 Back to prison with you!
1:17 Maybe I just changed her cuffs! I'll never tell!
1:48 Sadly, looks like she'll be our little jailbird after all.

But seriously, if you're going to put something like this out there, at least get somebody competent to edit the damn thing. Neither the visuals nor dialogue sync up very well. And the acting... meh, I've seen worse. She might be acceptable for a soap opera or Siffy Channel original movie.
