BDO - Has some nice old school throwback features, my favorites

ArchaegeoArchaegeo Member UncommonPosts: 233
So I missed CBT1 due to RL commitments, but I played almost all of CBT2 and had a blast, mostly due to the fact that it has some good throwback features to old school MMOs

I know one group of players made 50 in 14 hours, but I had over 50 hours on my main (wiz) and was only level 20 and didn't even learn 1/2 his fighting combos, so much to do other than fighting.

Some of my Favorites:
1) Slow Travel - Love the fact you cant pop all over the world instantly and that your things stay in the town where you stored them.  Makes the game for me much more immersive and your explore a lot more.
2) Conversation System - Its amity (intimacy/faction) system is a throw back to EQ where you cared about your reputation with folks.  Only drawback is there are no negative results making others hate you because of your actions. They just don't care till you make them like you.
3) Contribution Point system - Makes you care about how you have them spent because there are so many things demanding them you have to choose. Do you want another house for crafting or lodging or whatever, or do you want a new node point, or do you want to rent some nice items to help you in the world?
4) Death matters - Not so much at low levels, but very much at higher levels.  Its good to have a reason to fear dying, and to have a penalty for doing so.  It makes achievements matter more.
5) Karma system - People bitch that it kills PvP, I feel just the opposite since for me it brings back UO's karma system.  If I want to, I can kill a guy.  But it limits ganking for gankings sake that many people think is OW PvP, its not, its just being a dick.
6) OW PvP - The OW PvP through the siege system sounds amazing since there will be tangible reasons for doing it, plus you can always do guild vs guild for mass fights or more pvp in the world, and there are arenas.  The only PvP limited in BDO is ganking.
7) SO MUCH TO DO - No longer is it just quest, or grind combat kills.  I did those, but only when I needed to or happened to stumble across them.  I was too busy sailing, fishing, exploring, meeting all the npcs, gardening, crafting, gathering, working out node routes, trading, etc.

In short, its got me hooked, at least for now.
Just have to decide Tamer or Wizard.

I kinda feel like people are doing this game a disservice by calling it a PvP only MMO.  Sure it sounds like the siege system the main meta goal at the end of the game but building resources and character building are pretty in depth for crafting, PvE etc.

Random BDO rant:  Everyone wants a AAA quality game with lots of depth and development time put in...here it is.  Our western dev companies have given up on sinking extensive amount of time, money into development.  We are left with tiny indie companies trying to make everyone's dream MMO....not gonna happen.  We can all bitch about BDO but it is def better than the alternative indie titles that release in alpha, have almost no content, and exhaust their player base by the time they actually release.

I agree with your post about AAA titles.  And people griping about PvP in BDO are the vocal minority, those who want unlimited ability to gank whoever they want with no penalty.  And even that is coming with the KR patch that adds a red only village, it will give them a place to exist.

Make it P2P, remove the 3 lame pre order packages and we'll talk on how great the game can become later. The game might look good in CBT since everything is unlocked, but once released, we'll see how much of an influence the cash shop will have on progression.  I never cared for CBT's / Reviews on F2P/B2P titles, they mean nothing.   Pre Order only content really kills the vibe of any upcoming game, but people are so desperate to see something other than WoW that they're willing to blindly put cash on any mediocre game coming out. Anyway, enjoy your BDO, you'll be one of the few. ;)   And yes B&S sucks also, so don't think I'm just here to bash on BDO, BDO is bashing themselves, like ArcheAge that was suppose to be P2P but stupidly decided to go F2P, look what it did... Epic Failure.  ;)

Getting to 50 in 14 hours was slow by KR standards LOL. The game starts at 50 though so this is just great old school MMO grinder with a sandbox feature which a lot of us wanted.

I asked about the leveling speed from 50 to 60 on official forums in KR they are listed below but they slowed the pace in NA launch. Expect a couple months to reach it if you grind.

    1 - 50 is  ~ 8 hours

    50 -52 is  ~ 10 hours

    52 - 55 is  ~ 15 - 25 hours

    55 - 56 is  ~ 15 - 30 hours

    56 - 57 is  ~ 25 - 50 hours

    57 - 58 is  ~ 75 - 100 hours

    58 - 59 is  ~ 150 - 200 hours

    59 - 60 is  ~ 300 hours

Since there is no means to fast travel the auto run is a good feature IMO

OW PvP will be more GvG than anything doubt serious long term players will do much with flagging up due to the leveling speed.

I really like the features overall and so much to do that I doubt I will see 50 in a year LOL I also like the over all systems but still would like a flag system to OW FFA if one wanted to.

You can flag for pvp all the time if you want.  Nothing is stopping you.  You can go to an arena and pvp all you want.  You can make a pvp guild that declares war with other pvp guilds, and you can do the siege system which will be huge battles.

The only thing the Karma system limits is OW ganking, and it doesn't stop that, it just discourages it.  You can still do it if you feel it is warrented.

There is also going to be a city/area added that is for low karma players.  Also the guards will attack people with positive karma.  At least this is what I read on upcoming updates.

Edit:  If they put that area in a very isolated spot I don't imagine it would be too much of a problem.  No fast travel rocks as does regional banking.

Yeah, that is to cater to the ganking/griefing whiners who found that going red meant they needed to delete.  Now they will have a place to run and hide then go out and grief more.  Its going to be a negative for the majority of players, and a positive for those who want to kill anyone they come across, usually when they are otherwise engaged.

Yeah there is an error in the way I said it and flagging in OW is still risky if the other doesn't due to dying to mobs as attacker will result in loss exp. The person being attacked is not affected but the attacker will loose experience if the one he flags does not and kills him.

We'll see how the pay2win works out. By now, DAUM has the message. Its non-stop flooding their forums.

On a side note, the higher tier horses look really fast.

Thanks OP good thread. Nice to read about the game without all the poo piled on it and read some insight into how the game  works and why it makes it sandboxish . I do love the systems especially the ones where what you do matters and that your reputation with the NPCs require work to build up. Although the kills you on sight that Everquest had was better. So-and-so scowls at you ready to attack.

This game has a ton of stuff to do IF you take in everything it has to offer.

I will admit, It has been awhile since I was a little overwhelmed with a game in the first 3-6 hrs especially when reading up on it as I play.

This is exactly how I feel on the subject. It is not meant to be a replacement for a huge story driven Themepark MMO. It does excel as an open-world sandbox. I personally love the experience, but it can be an acquired  taste.

I didn't know others acquired the taste for beer, mine was implemented in my default settings!

Yes there is plenty to do in the game, but soon most of it will be not worth doing. So people end up grinding anyways. But then again, there is no ultimate goal in the game so casual players can still do those little things if they want. It's quite relaxing and enjoyable, like a walk on the beach. For those hardcore players who want to get the best gears possible/able to kill easily in PvE or PvP (reasonable goals in any MMO), it's mostly just grind and RNG. So in the end the game does suit people's different needs, a casual player who don't have much can still enjoy the game as much as a hardcore player that grinds or PvP everyday, albeit in different ways. And that is really the one thing I like in a good sandbox game, do the stuff that you enjoy doing without having the game punish you for it.

Nice post, my thoughts exactly, BDO really nailled the key points in order to be one solid mmorpg for the coming years.
