Bad Native Americans and bad Frenchies, English, Germans. Could even go with Spanish coming from the south.
Us Brits were out of the US in 1784. That's about the year the Wild West started, so Red Coats wouldn't be authentic. I've never heard of any Brits in the Wild West, but I suppose there could have been some.
They were there, they just became Americans
Just sayin', the wild west was full of Irish.
Well isn't that just their luck
usualy they were refered to as "greenhorns" at first, after some time (or rather, an even greener greenhorn came around), they got part of the welcome party tho
does no one read lucky luke anymore?! shesh wally is not amused.
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
I can't think of a single good reason to make a cowboy game, let alone an MMO, and a thousand reasons why they shouldn't, bad taste just doesn't even come close.
I wonder why there is not a single Wild West MMORPG out there. There could be so much to do in that setting. Like small western towns, old mines, Indian tribes, Warfare/PVP, treasures, crafting/inventions, wilderness, territories, trains... So much good stuff you could implement. Would you play it, if it was a high quality game?
Dark Fall Online, is just like this sorta.
Or make a game like Age OF Conan, but more real feel and better game-over-all, but with brutal executions and story line with player to player pvp executions similar to Fury Online? No one remembers that game im sure.
OK ok And what with Native Americans ? included in game or not as if it didn't even exist as if European Emigrants never did their genocide ? Or they will be in game only as Mobs to be slaughtered thousands and thousands ? AHAHA this game won't even get the right to be published xD ......might if it will be accepted by some minorities but then it must be quite true to American history but every one knows Americans are most ignorant hypocrites in entire world . So how we deal with History lore behind the game ?
Can't use Native Americans, trust me, you will be sued..... is it possible yes, but they are very picky about that, so it makes it to risky for any company...
That's why I'm here ))) I will never stop reminding Americans history lessons . But to be honest maybe it would be possible ? I guess today descendants of native Americans have some kind of society than handle with this kind of questions and lawsuits ?
I'm not a big fan of American history and is mostly because of today hypocrite geopolitics and called democracy or how I think Democracy Terrorism. but this is another story and we won't focus on it )))
For example one of my favorite movies is " Dance with Wolfs" was this movie met with any hate or nonacceptance from this minority ? Don't think so
Maybe you could make an agreement that you will portrait them honorable strong and spiritual ......
For example in " Dance with Wolfs " they managed to find balance between all this ....
2 groups of LAWFUL GOOD "Main character and the rather friendly tribe he joins " and 2 groups of CHAOTIC EVIL " Evil Chaotic invaders and evil chaotic Native Americans tribes "
What for me as some one mentioned Orange yellow environment is not something my gaze enjoys ... maybe because I was born in Europe in a very green country with big green forests and crystalline rivers .
I did some google for you National Congress of American Indians http://www.ncai.org/ maybe if you will work and cooperate with them and how you will portrait them in game they will pass your game ?^^
If game is based on history facts they will only win because this will raise awarnace of white americans about their past as result next generation will be more adequate....I hope (I didn't mention I lost hope in humanity )
But then there is a game play aspect that fails balance between armed to teeth Invaders with guns and shoot guns and native Americans with bows ..
Personally I would play for the native Americans ..one of my friends had an amazing wall picture with and Native American girl gorgeousness with some wolfs eagles and other spiritual crap but very beautiful ....
This theme has lot of issues not only related to possible lawsuits that might be avoided if negotiate with NCAI but also balance wise for an MMO genre .
even though its the number 1 game type I have been wanting I try to avoid this thread because its clear its going to turn into a thread about race and racial injustice bla bla bla
just make it SteamCowPunk
Lol if there wasn't racial injustice mentioned you just brought it to the party gunz John Blazing.

Pretty neat where some terms like "Greenhorn" get their origins

If it was a 100% sandbox and well coded with authentic atmosphere and a HUGE landscape WITH open PVP. I just might, yes.
Themepark or instances, then no.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Not for me, have never been a fan of the Wild West.
Perhaps its part of being British, but we just don't have any equivalent landscape in our countries or any equivalent timeperiod in our history where we had "frontiers" etc, so there is nothing to connect me to the Wild West. I just don't like deserts / scrubland and the yellow/orange colour palette.
However, if it was built well then I might play. We've never had a AAA sandbox MMO, so if the first one happened to be set in the Wild West then I'd probably give it a go just to see what it's like.
I can't think of a single good reason to make a cowboy game, let alone an MMO, and a thousand reasons why they shouldn't, bad taste just doesn't even come close.
You're right the British were never an expansionist empire. You may want do some reading about your country in Africa/India and elsewhere. It makes the Wild Wild west look pretty mild.
@Phry while I agree the very sensitive nature of the Native American's and the horrible way they have been and are being treated is a very real world issue and not one I would want to explore in any type of game I think (someone smarter than me) could present it in such a way as to not be offensive or derogatory.
As far as bad taste, that is just your spin on it, there have been wild west games, none that come to mind that were amazing hits but they have existed in some shape for awhile now without offending anyone that has come forward.
Again, the theme does not spark my interest much, but I think the; "hair on fire omg the feels" reaction is a more than a bit overboard.
Few countries don't have a murky history, the UK certainly has a history that may be considered somewhat murkier than most, but pretending they didn't happen, or making it 'sanitised for entertainment' is equally questionable, it just so happens that the 'wild west' is one of those questionable periods of history, sanitising it for entertainment, is imo, without question, bad taste. Of course if you sanitise history for entertainment, you can probably persuade people it never really happened.
Who says it has to be handled in a way any different than medieval or ancient culture is? Why would it have to be set in an American west? That's what fantasy(imagination) is for, a game that would mimic western life yet not mimic that period in human history is no way pretending "it didn't happen", this is done all of the time with Medieval and Ancient settings, which those time periods are just as if not more so full of atrocity.

sounds like basically you are saying

No. To limited imo. And yes I can see "genocide" issues - especially if it touched on pre-European events that inolved Indian tribe A "wiping out" tribe B etc. (No different to Europe / India / Asia etc.)
Steampunk though that would offer more scope. Not just William Gibson, Bruce Sterling either. Tim Powes, James P Blaylock, some K W Jeter not forgetting Bryan Talbot's Luther Arkwright graphic novels.
And if one went the way of China Mieville Bas-Lag books (Perdido Street Station, The Scar, The Iron Council) you would have Steampunk combined with Magic, Bio-engineering, Aliens, Demons, space-time warps ...
I think many here are struggling to find reasons why such a game hasnt existed using the koolaid assumption that developers always know best and as a result there MUST be a reason.
usually in cases like this the only reason is 'we are afraid because nobody has done it before, we dont have metrics on game play use for such games so we have to wait for some guy with his brother in the basement to make one first'

This is reminding me of the Netflix movie Ridiculous 6 which stars Adam Sandler as a Native American with superpowers. It was kinda original and refreshing to see something like that since it has practically never been done before.
Comments
because that is basically what SteamPunk is.
Wild West movie? yeah that is a SteamPunk movie set in the wild west
