Ok, you are actually first to talk about this. Combined with outrages prices that are reported in shop. Its virtually extortion, fitting very immoral F2P. But certainly not B2P title
Glad i didnt buy it.
I only dont understand why nobody that buy and play game didnt deem its worth to talk about it or warn others.
A b2p title with cash shop is just wrong. Not to speak of the amount of money stuff will cost you in that cash shop.
Several newer games have taken this approach. B2P and cash shop...it might be the new thing. I do hope not.
Newer? I swear the older B2P mmos had a cash shop? I say this because how are they to generate any sort of income to create content? At some point box sales will decline and highly doubt the few that buy here and there in the future will be more than enough to fund content patches, updates and keep the gaming running no?
Can understand no cash shop in a single player console sort of game, but in an MMO?
Well, there are cash shops and then there are cash shops.
When how you look, inventory space/carrying weight, loot and leveling efficiency are all behind a paywall... well that's a pretty aggressive cash shop.
The main problem here is that there is very little you can do in game to look good, or even just different. That is intentional and is the most aggressive attempt to sell outfits in any MMO so far, ftp or not (and this one is b2p which usually have less aggressive cash shops).
I read that they literally took out helmet models from our version of the game so you'd have to get a helmet from the cash shop if you wanted one.
The worst part is they've reserved the right to sell power indirectly in the cash shop "after the launch phase".
tl;dr: We're getting almost the same cash shop model as their f2p versions, but we have to pay a box price for it.
You guys are spinning such bullshit about this game it almost makes me want to vomit.
"When how you look, inventory space/carrying weight, loot and leveling efficiency are all behind a paywall... well that's a pretty aggressive cash shop." - Similar things are in ESO's cash shop, WoW lets you buy a fully leveled character, both of those games let you basically circumvent playing the game to get the best gear by having guildies/ friends give you it or by buying gold with cash.
And you guys make it sound like all customization is in the cash shop. FFS, there are two, count it one, two, yes just two fucking outfits for my class in the cash shop, and a whole ONE costume. And I don't even like the look of them compared to what I get in game.
You constantly go on about what they might do in the future without giving them any credit for what they have actually done in the present. They have given us a b2p game almost completely devoid of any p2w, and what advantages you can buy are on par with or less than what you can get in games with much higher price tags or even subs.
Look at ESO (a game I love btw), devs promised it would never go b2p and yet it did. Here in BDO you have some honesty, with the devs saying they might change up the cash shop in the future but if they do they will take measures to try and prevent any adverse impact on the game, and they get shot down for it.
"You guys are spinning such bullshit about this game it almost makes me want to vomit."
Sounds like a bad case of Fanboitis. Don't worry, I get it too sometimes. It goes away eventually.
"Similar things are in ESO's cash shop,"
Hmm, I wouldn't know since I don't like ESO and only played it for about 5 minutes it was so awful, but when it comes to apperance, no you don't look the same throughout the game unless you pay money.
"WoW lets you buy a fully leveled character,"
Eh, I guess, but so what? It's mainly so you don't make people trudge through 10 years of content to get to the new stuff. That has nothing to do with how you look or how fast you can level/loot at endgame, which with a basically-infinite-grind endgame, will turn out to be pretty important things.
"both of those games let you basically circumvent playing the game to get the best gear by having guildies/ friends give you it or by buying gold with cash."
What? The best items in most MMOs (like WoW) are dropped so gold doesn't play a decisive factor when it comes to gear. As to potentially being carried- well I've never heard that as an argument before lol but normally people aren't paying their friends/guild to carry them so it can't really be argued as p2w.
"And you guys make it sound like all customization is in the cash shop. FFS, there are two, count it one, two, yes just two fucking outfits for my class in the cash shop, and a whole ONE costume. And I don't even like the look of them compared to what I get in game. "
Yeah but just because there aren't many cash shop outfits (there will be) doesn't mean suddenly you have a lot of options in-game. And it's a fact that the cash shop options look like new clothes while the armor you get looks like secondhand clothes.
I know for a lot of people they're like "So fucking what, wear rags, who cares it doesn't affect the game" but I'd argue in this game IN PARTICULAR appearance matters very much. So much of the greatness of the game is in its atmosphere and graphics.
"Look at ESO (a game I love btw), devs promised it would never go b2p and yet it did. Here in BDO you have some honesty, with the devs saying they might change up the cash shop in the future but if they do they will take measures to try and prevent any adverse impact on the game, and they get shot down for it."
I'm actually with you on this one. I do think it's way cooler and even a good business decision to announce potentially negative changes asap. You may lose a little initially (like me, I haven't bought the game yet) but in the long run, you're not going to make people feel lied to and burned.
I'm not trying to shoot the game down. Maybe I have come off as a little too harsh in this thread and I don't mean to because much of the game is amazing, and I wouldn't fault anyone for buying it or enjoying it.
I'm just explaining what irks me personally and why I've chosen not to buy the game. I still might, actually. I've been more and more tempted the past couple of days watching streams and whatnot.

But you are shooting the game down, and misrepresenting it.
You have constantly been saying that it has almost a f2p cash shop with a b2p price tag and blatantly ignoring the fact that the NA/EU version has a considerably altered cash shop from the other regions and the fact that the cash shop is tame even compared to games much more expensive than it.
You call the cash shop aggressive and claim "this one is b2p which usually have less aggressive cash shops", and yet now you say you know nothing of ESO's cash shop, which is a major b2p mmo often hailed for having reasonable business model. Name these other b2p mmos have a less "aggressive" cash shop. GW2? It has a huge cash shop and you can even buy gold through the shop. In other words, the two biggest b2p mmos have comparable if not more aggressive cash shops ...
You say its fine to buy a fully leveled toon, but somehow xp boosts are an issue in a game where levels mean virtually nothing? WTF is wrong with you.
I don't even know if I will play BDO for that long, its not a game for everyone. But here is an mmo that finally combines a b2p model with virtually no p2w elements, its almost unprecedented, and you guys claim it has an aggressive cash shop that locks customization behind a paywall because I can buy 2 outfits in the cash shop? All you can talk about is how bad it is because they might introduce a more p2w system in the future? You are looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Companies need to make money or we wont have fun games to play. The problem here is finding ways to make players feel good when they hand over money. This is not a good way to do that. Everyone wants a cool looking avatar and the only way to do that is fork out 30 bucks? In a month I will be board again of how my avatar looks, so 30 bucks again? Again I dont think BD gets the market they are trying to make money in.
I Would have to say they understand their target market, vanity Item buyers perfectly.
Now for players who don't care about appearance as much, they either nailed it from a player perspective or will get a piece of them when it comes to the higher level grind or gear Enchanting.

I agree Ky because PvP players like to show off. They will need individuality to do that. Hence costumes...perfect idea. I think contrary to what people are thinking these people definitely know their target audience pretty well.

The cash shop is more aggressive that BnS which is a f2p game.
The more I look at it, the worse it gets. Reddit is getting pissy because there is no realistic way to dye your armor the way you want in game.
Look at this snippet:
"Let me give you can example. I got the 50 hour achievement the other day and thus got 9 dyes. Cool right? Not really. After I identified all the dyes I had a somewhat bright yellow dye, a purple dye and 7 common dyes of varying shades of shit brown.
One has to wonder why there are so many variations on the least used color in any game especially when you just look at each of the palettes in game it's just tons of brown in the possible RNG pool to pull from. I combined 6 of them and got... more shades of poop.
There is absolutely no reason except a shameless cash grab to have so many shades of brown in the color pool. Even the most hardcore rollplayer would not want this many shades of brown.
All the character customization in the world won't matter if everyone is still running around in brown paper bags."
So there is an rng element to the dye system, and they weight it with tons of shades of brown...
If they're going to go that far to push people towards buying $30 outfits from the shop (oh, $29 outfits, excuse me), it's really only going to get worse. Much much worse.
Nah, I'm back to a firm pass on this game unless something changes and they stop acting like weasels when it comes to the monetization of the game.
I think the worse part of this is the fact this game has so much to offer but a greedy cash shop is turning away so many people. Im really glad I didnt buy into this game. Still waiting on the sidelines to see what BD turns into.

Dyes ? ... yawn. Cash shop is so aggressive I go to it eagerly wanting to spend some dosh and never find anything to buy. People like you give gamers a bad name, complain about anything and manage to paint the best of things black.
Besides other obvious corner cutting in game, they have avoided the need to create multiple gear sets and visuals with them.Even the stat system is a joke, might as well not even have it.Example pet system looting from 4% to 10% lmao ,wtf is getting max level pet to gain 6%.You know what 6% is ,that is like 6 x out of 100 you get instant loot and the other 94x nothing. In other words why bother.
Other stats are like + 1 then upgrades are again +1 lmao, why bother.
This truly was a lazy and cheap design,,but hey did we mention it looks good?
So far looking over MANY aspects of the game,i would say the ships/boats is a nice addition, mounts and taming is nice and i can't think of anything else.Problem is we already saw ship/boats in other games and MO had taming of horses so how much effort did they really go above and beyond what is al;ready out there?
The nodes are just a statistical addition, they COULD have been really nice/fun if implemented in plain sight and not some statistical code with icons.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
If this is the worse thing about this game then they have done quite a good job. Treat it like a subscription game and pay for an outfit every now and then. Is that so hard ? If the game is good enough why not support it. Having said that though perhaps they can throw in some variety in outfits or allow the basic ones to be dyed.
Nowadays if the game has 50 positive aspects and only 1 negative aspect, everyone will always focus on that 1 negative aspects... people want everything to be perfect and end up ignoring all the good parts of a game because of one single detail that they disliked... kinda gotten used to that kind of thinking despite hating it
100% agree with that, it's a shame tbh, people slating a decent game for dead over something quite small and then people wounder why there are not many decent games about
While saying that, it would be nice to get more in-game customization around outfits, but it's not a massive issue imho. Think instead of coming here and saying "I Quit" should have raised it in the forums in a constructive way, tbh might do it myself.
You do know that some people find some aspects more important than others? Why are some players quick to judge them relevant or not? If that aspect is a game breaker to them, then those "50" other good things do not change that. If cosmetics weren't so important, why would cash shops focus on this aspect in the first place? You can't make money on something that isn't in high demand, business 101.
I think the worse part of this is the fact this game has so much to offer but a greedy cash shop is turning away so many people. Im really glad I didnt buy into this game. Still waiting on the sidelines to see what BD turns into.
If they put in costume vendor in game with some good looking costum and dye, then they will also put in gear enchantment items and rarity upgrade items in cash shop. Like they do in KR and RUS.

Pay to win is not the issue being discussed here, stop derailing. Not allowing for ANY decent looking gear through normal game play is cheesy at best and downright underhanded for those gamers who find cosmetics important to their sense of progression and reward.
Vorthanion said: Not allowing for ANY decent looking gear through normal game play is cheesy at best and downright underhanded for those gamers who find cosmetics important to their sense of progression and reward.
With that logic, nothing could be ever placed in the cash shop since there will always be some gamers who find xxx important to their sense of progression and reward.
Weren't you all clamouring for a game that had a cash shop that focussed on cosmetics instead of P2W elements ? So which is it now then.
Oh yes the option where I can simply play a game and devote large quantities of my free time while taking up the resources that the game developers have provided month after month and expect to not at all pay for it with the exception of the initial investment. The cash shop must only contain things I have no wish to purchase and everything else I should be able to obtain with my time investment while mooching off and devouring the resources at a greater rate than other casual players do.
Also make sure you do not place anything I might remotely want behind a pay wall or else you will face my wrath.

Cash shops were suppose to enhance the game play, not replace it. What is the point of putting all of the good looking stuff in the cash shop and none in the content? How does that enhance the game by denying an important aspect of the reward and progression system? Wasn't unique aesthetics one of the main reasons why people raided in other games? Aesthetics play a much larger role in player satisfaction than many of you are willing to admit. I sure hope MMORPGs without cash shops make a return, because I find all of this a bunch of crap.
A cash shop focused on dyes/cosmetics is not the problem. The problem is the lack of variety of in-game gear. There's literally next to no variety. Meaning, if you want to look different, you HAVE to buy something. You can't earn it in-game. Why is it an either or question? You can easily have a game with good variety of gear in game, and a cash shop stock full of beautiful cosmetic costumes.

First, they save money by not having a lot of different gear in game, keeps the overhead down. Second, if anyone want's to look really different, they can "encourage" them to pay extra for it, part of the core monetization strategy for this title.

Ok, so if the lack of customization is the price to pay to avoid p2w, what was the box price for?

Fact is there needs to be cosmetic options that dont use RL money. P2W items need to stay out of the cash shop. Easy to do, let there be items that add stats in the cash shop but the best items need to be earned in game. Sets cosmetic items to a reasonable price. Seems in NA, sales at 5 bucks for a set. Reg price of 10-20 bucks. IF they dont get it, VOTE WITH YOUR WALLETS PEOPLE!!!!

Why would anyone buy gear that is inferior to ingame gear? Where do you get that the price for cosmetic items is not reasonable?
You can't afford it? Fair enough but that does not make it any less reasonable...

The box price it has been said is to reduce botting and gold selling commonly found in F2P games, although I am not entirely convinced it actually works.

Might be a tad extreme. Just a tad.
Now for players who don't care about appearance as much, they either nailed it from a player perspective or will get a piece of them when it comes to the higher level grind or gear Enchanting.

Dyes, lol....
