EQ Next Cancelled. Devs continues to abandon AAA "old style" MMORPGs?

nariusseldonnariusseldon Member EpicPosts: 27,775
http://www.pcgamer.com/everquest-next-is-cancelled-but-landmark-will-go-on/

and I quote:

“Unfortunately, as we put together the pieces, we found that it wasn’t fun. We know you have high standards when it comes to Norrath and we do too. In final review, we had to face the fact that EverQuest Next would not meet the expectations we—and all of you—have for the worlds of Norrath.”

Landmark will live on though.

I guess one fewer AAA old style MMORPGs. Any more of those in development?

That's not my take way from this cancellation. My take away is that Daybreak sucks.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Well no and no and sadly no,there is no more Triple A games.

Now that most every developer has lowered their standards, nobody else is going to push the envelope either, everyone is going to lower their standards.Look at the giant Blizzard, does Hearthstone or Overwatch look like a giant billion dollar developer? Not a chance in hell.

Imo the ONLY developer left that might go big is Square Enix, they are the only one pushing the envelope while others are going low budget and blind fanbois calling it  "Artistic, stylistic" roflmao,,ok sure it is.
The problem is that even inside of Square Enix i see corner cutting in areas they never did before,so things do not look bright for the future.

Already we see the next GIMMICK to try and sell rubbish games >>>VR.They are going to attach VR to 2 bit piles of junk games to attract buyers. There is one person i know that is not going to be a sucker to cheap marketing ideas and i think you know him, pretty well ,i think i know him pretty well.i think i see him everyday. :P

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

    It is not isolated though.

Titan was cancelled. Don't tell me you think Blizz sucks. They certainly don't suck in terms of financial results.

And no other big dev is jumping into old style AAA MMORPGs either.

Fk DBG. They are done getting a single penny more from me. I will play P99 until Pantheon arrives, seeing as these guys seem to be incapable of producing a new enjoyable MMORPG by their own admission.

    Ugh..

Two unrelated data points is not a trend.

The budget for AAA MMORPGs is huge, making the games is hard and the market is fickle, the ROI just isnt there. We'll probably see more of shift toward persistant online games and shared space games like Ark, rather than MMO worlds. In fact we have been seeing it for a while.

There is no way this was going to be an old school game. The name was old school but that was about it. This was going to be a GW2 clone mixed with a little minecraft. No trinity, everybody could be every class blah blah blah.

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

Most likely the worst title to represent the content of an article I have ever seen...ever

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

As much as I hate to say this, it might be best for the genre to die a little death for a few years. Let it move back to its roots of big dreamers and little budgets cause we've all seen what unlimited money gives us... a whole bunch of marketing :p

Yeah Narius, if anyone was going to dance on this grave it would be you of course.

Let me fix the title of the thread "bad" devs continue to abandon the market they simply don't understand. There are plenty of bustling AAA MMO's in the oven going on as we speak. This is great news. We finally more space opened for the real players to prosper in this market.

Well they did aim high to say the least, but i think many (me included) hoped that they would at least reach part of the way... i guess you could say they did with landmark... But still.

Then again this is not even close to being as sour for me as the way CCP abused the WoD MMO (incidently the reason i am not buy their products anymore, and why i am very happy that Paradox now owns the WoD license)

This have been a good conversation

I hope Paradox does something with it, that would be cool

I think people should be excited but "wait and see" until these games are released.

So many projects have good intentions but never see the light of day.

And we all know which road is paved with "good intentions"...

Agree... Big money and talent rather make phone apps sadly then produce a game.

Really Developers need to stop making MMORPGs.  We just have too many right now and many have to close down before a AAA Publisher will take a risk again.  There is just no room in a market that is flooded with MMORPGs that includes ok MMOS and Crap MMOs.

Not late in noticing, the trend has been going on for some time now. But it hasn't been a complete extinction yet, which is why i said they are "going the way of the dodo".
