While the idea of “massive multiplayer” online RPG means that we’re in there with others by design, sometimes it’s nice to just adventure through with a partner-in-crime, just the two blazing a path to glory. With that in mind, we’ll take a look today at five games that that are great fun for two.

My wife and I have been playing WoW together since 11/2006 when I introduced her to gaming. Along the way, we've found quite a few other husband and wife teams that now make up the back-bone of our gaming community. It's really nice that we can share a common interest.

So basically any AAA western MMO? Interesting suggestion. Im sure they get overlooked, because of all the amazing niche indie MMOs casulals lust for.

Well the trinity system is great for a pair especially if they are ok with tank/heal specs.

My wife and I play together, its rare I log in and she is not playing with me. SWToR lets you play everything together. Same with WS. WoW and ESO phasing is really bad so unless you are on the very same step, you cant help each other often. Also ESO has many parts of the story that is solo only, so you are forced to solo. On that list I would rate ESO low on the scale for a MMO for couples.

We also enjoied NW together. Again a game that took time to think when making quests. Everything can be teamed. The player made quests were a great side distraction as well and again, everything could be teamed. GW2 was also a great side distraction for 2 years. Again, you could team every part of the game, even your main story quest. Of this list I would rate them for couples like this...

    1. SWToR
    2. GW2
    3. NW
    4. WS
    5. WoW (heavy phasing)
    6. ESO in last place (heavy phasing and forced solo quests)

What Indy MMO would you suggest for couples?

I was a bit surprised to see ESO on the list. Have they fixed the issue when two players had to be at the exact same phase of a story-line to group? Players were saying they had to group 100% of the time to experience the exact same content, which means one couldn't do some story-lines on there own if the other partner couldn't play at that time for some reason or they would be out of phase.

Marvel Heroes is a great game for couples and all the others on the list.

    Wizard 101

The game requires you to be at same point in the quests and story, but as long as you're always playing together the game mechanics are perfect for playing duo. Also in Wizard 101 playing duo doesn't make the story content so easy it's completely trivial.

Tried them all, didn't like any of them. I'm hoping for something good to come out soon.

It's not REALLY an MMO, but I would NOT suggest playing League of Legends together (unless you like one being frustrated at the other for being bad, which seems to be most cases of couples playing that I've seen)... hahaha

I've met way too many couples in Tera and World of Warcraft.

City of Heroes was amazing for couples, especially with the sidekick mode that meant your friend/other half etc didn't have to play 'all the time'

Wish other games would implement similar

My roommate and I used to play that together all the time. Sidekicking in CoH was one of the best I have seen done. Being able to solo and do what you want and always able to come back and play with friends of any levels was awesome. My wife and I were about to go play CoH just as the game was announced it being canceled. I am sure she would have loved it.

My wife and I have played a lot of MMORPGs together over the last 20+ years. The one we have played the most so far has been RIFT.

    Uruketo, 70 Bard/Ninja/Warrior

    Final Fantasy XIV - Midgardsormr

Surprised nobody has mentioned EQ2.  Mature game that has an amazing amount of fluff/content that chicks like, would keep a couple happily playing for a long time.  For the most part you can duo almost all the content up until the last expansion and with it's housing, crafting/decorating the wife will stay busy during off hours when not adventuring.

    Wurm Online.

Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.
As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

Can either of y'all, @Nanfoodle or @An70ny, explain the sidekick mode to me? I never tried it, is it similar to the mentor system used in EQ2? Where the higher level player was scaled down to the lower party member?

My problem with that was all my wife wanted to do was mess around in her home. I spent my time soloing and she made house. There was so much you can do with player housing in that game she lost herself lol.

I have met all levels of couples in every MMO I have tried. But I must admit to meeting more of the female half in EQ2 than any other MMO. Usually the male half is in a Vendor screen, or Crafting screen and ignoring his better half at the MMO party.

My wife hates games. But if she were to play one, these would have been good picks.

But I agree with @Luiden that EQ2 merits inclusion. When I played that game, about 1/3 of the folks in my guild were husband and wife.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Sidekick   easier this way, I think.

There was a thread with the very same topic a few days ago -MMO for a couple-, I suggested in there CO (plus LotRO, and for some extent TSW), for the very same reason: you can play together everywhere, can sync your builds for more efficiency (if both have Freeform option), and if one of them "rushes" ahead, there's the level sync with sidekicking. Actually it's even more convenient than it was in CoH, Cryptic made CO a much smoother gameplay in many areas. (Difficulty setting adjust is easier too, than it was in CoH)

It was not just EQ2, EQ1 was also flooded with couples. Also off the top of my head, couples who met and got married from playing together. EQ1 and EQ2 tops that chart.

I encountered many couples in LoTRO when I was playing.
