Summoner is really easy to start out with and is really strong at the current level cap. Destroyers and good Kung Fu Masters are bad match-ups for Summoner. For your first playthrough, if you want a strong character that is awesome in PVE, and will easily hit platinum in PVP, I'd go with Summoner or Destroyer. They are both easy to understand and require less mechanical skill than the other classes.
Blade Dancers are also a good starter for PVP, but are not too great (or fun, IMO) in PVE.
I agree with Simsalabim77 - go with Summoner if you prefer ranged (but there is a little pet management) or Destroyer if you like melee - both are good in PvE or PvP and are beginner friendly.
My main is a FM(45), ran a sin to max for level challenge(45), started
with a Destroyer(45). I'm keeping my main the FM, the Assassin in a word
awesome. The destroyer i think I'm done with that one.
Destroyer, is interesting, lots of Tanky, bashing, tossing around type of fun to be had.
Assassin, you gotta know your chit, be quick or die, think fast on your feet.
Force Master, a little more laid back than the sin, have to find your groove/style and stick with it.
