Between this and Microsoft planning something similar in a more upgraded fashion, it looks like we're going to get console releases that may look similar to Cell Phone releases. Almost a new upgraded model every year.

i somewhat felt like with this generation they would have to do it for two reasons.

    1. this generation release was spec wise lower than gamers had expected
    2. VR..yes i know...but still...VR

Is this partly why MS has started strongly promoting their "play the same game on PC or XBox" ideas ?

Playstation and XBox hardware releases are always close together, neither camp can afford to be upstaged for too long. If Sony are planning a PS that will run 4K games, Microsoft cannot afford to ignore that.

Microsoft are looking increasingly lost. They have no horse in the VR race, and their focus on AR is interesting, but won't hold a candle to VR in gaming. That means their console has no VR tech that is made specifically for it. That may cost them dearly...

I'm not a console gamer, but my 15 year old son is.  We held out buying one until we got a good price on the white Destiny Bundle edition.  Now, a year after I buy him a new one, they're going to upgrade it?

What this really means is that games will be designed around newer, more powerful version, and until I upgrade my son's, then those games will play poorly.  Consider me fairly pissed off at this point.

personally i think the primary reason for these upgrades (from both) coming around so fast is VR.

What they dont want is a bunch of people going out and buying a Steam Machine to have VR sex parties in the living room.

so you told your son to wait(1 year 5months after the release!!!) for the system to drop in price instead of just buying it when it comes out and your pissed a newer model is being released? how long has ps4 been out? its been 2 years 5 months since its release. time for an upgrade

Ofc they are... if they did not they would be out of the VR race before it even began for them.

This have been a good conversation

I read that Sony was creating an option like the google chrome that would port your ps4 into your PC. can anyone confirm?

An upgrade for existing owners? Since it's a change of hardware, and not software, it won't happen.
4k Resolution is x4 the pixels of 1080p?  Yes, actually it is. :)
        4k is actually 3840 pixels × 2160  (8,294,400 pixels)
        1080p is actually 1920 × 1080 progressive (2,073,600 pixels)
Of course, that requires a lot more horsepower to run, so you will probably have to decide between more bells and whistles or higher resolution graphics, because neither one of those is free, and a GPU that can handle both at the same time is going to be a LOT more expensive than what they have now. So unless the cost of the PS4 does something crazy like doubles in price, it's not going to be that powerful of a chip.
Of course, at this point you start getting platform fragmentation. You now have machines with two distinct capabilities. As a dev you have to choose to support the older version, the newer version, or support both fully. Guess what, a large percentage of them will choose the older version because that will also run on the newer one, but without the possible improved graphics. End result, very few games will use the capabilities of the new version.
Maybe they are planning a PS4VR. Which might make sense, but I don't think there's a large enough market at the expected package price to make it real hit, so it would only be a niche market.
Just my opinions and such, feel free to ignore.

Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...

My kids don't get everything right when it comes out.  Helps ensure that they don't become entitled little shits like most of their friends.

Fact is I told my son he had to come up with half the money, and instead of coming up with half the money he kept buying PS3 games with his allowance.  When he finally showed some discipline and saved his money for a few months, then he had his half and we bought it.

Also, the PS3 was on the market for many years and Sony lied in 2014 when they claimed that the PS4 they have on the market now was going to have a longer life cycle than the PS3, so yes, I have every right to be pissed that 2.5 years into a "longer than PS3 lifecycle" it is getting a significant upgrade.  Do your research.

This sounds to me like Sony is unhappy with their VR system more than anything.  Or rather, it's performance, at least.

As far as the upgrading, they'd lose a ton of money if they did free upgrades... not going to happen.  Anyway, unless people really feel the need for 4K and/or PSVR, I don't figure it'll affect many folks.  I don't see much reason to be upset over it.  The games will still run on the regular PS4 just fine.

Personally, if I had a PS4, I sure wouldn't buy the "4.5" unless it came as a full kit(VR, upgraded console, camera, motion controllers, and all that jazz).  This seems a bit of a lost cause to me.  I can't imagine this will benefit Sony much.  I just assume the PSVR + PS4 is absolute garbage... which was pretty much expected by everyone when comparing to the less limited PC VR sets.

The VR games that are coming out for the PS4 are going be low res small games, Nintendo like type of looking games to keep that 60+ fps they are aiming at. Was about time that had to do something about it or VR gaming on the PS4 be dead in the water if people can't play the games they enjoy with out being cut down.

Agree about the upgrade for existing owners not happening - unless they did some sort of trade-in I suppose.
Agree about devs having to make choices - but that is always the case.

As far as the upgrade itself goes though that shouldn't be a problem. For example the NVidia Shield TV is already on the market and it supports 4k at 60fps (streamed films and games); its tiny and relatively inexpensive and its Tegra X1 processor is being used by other companies - production is up and running.

Sony doesn't get to decide how long its not going to upgrade its system when it has competition called Nintendo, and Microsoft. ever heard of them? stop putting up your blinders and think for a second
