Shouldn't blame it on your age, you're not 82. I'm not trying to be a dick but I actually felt a little offended by that.
I tend to agree with you, I am only 45 and my reflexes aren't slowed at all. It's a matter of training and attitude. If you are in your 30's and feel like you are slowing down I would recommend making some life changes. A man that goes to my gym just turned 88, he runs daily and still lifts, excusing injuries (I have several) you choose when to stop, you choose to be healthy or a pig. It's on you, age is just a damn number.
New to gaming? Funny story after you retire you have time to pursue many hobbies and games are not restricted by age. Not at all. You will find that many people on this site are quite a bit older than 30 and really enjoy gaming. Well at least really enjoy bitching about gaming. So, sorry to burst your bubble sonny, but my age does not nor will it ever restrict how I choose to have fun and spend my free time.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

He means its ok to be over 30 if you play awesome games with no grind, advanced and original combat, and are which are extremely popular such as darkfall, mortal online, eve online, and das tal.
He has difficulty understanding why you would play other mmos (such as the apparently totally generic, unoriginal, copy and paste themepark Asian grinder called BDO, which has also suffered a "massive" population decline) if you are over 30. Not sure why 30 is the cut off, but I am sure there is some solid science behind it.
the thing is I enjoy pvp and trading and I know theres no reselling or trading, now pvp I can't seem to do either, I will need to think further on this
There is reselling and trading, it's all done through the market, instead of direct player trading. You can use the hot bar and traditional MMO style combat if you want, with left and right mouse buttons as your primary attacks and the hot bar for abilities.
PvP isn't as fast paced and frantic as it would seem. Combat is a lot more tactical, and a LOT less button mashing and spamming. They have in game video to show you combos from basic to advance which makes it easy to figure out and practice.
PS, I'm 39 with a condition like MS which causes involuntary movement and difficulty with fine motor control and I'm having no issues with the combat. I actually like it a ton more than traditional tab target, and have a much easier time with it.
I'm in my fifties and have an alt for each class. I'm horrible at twitch - what I've done is for each class is pick a few combos and work with just them - there's lots of choice but the PVE (at least at level 20 and below) is very forgiving. Currently I'm building my empire so not sure I'll get much above level 20 on any of my characters for quite a while - you do increase your overall level when doing any of the non combat stuff but it's very slow - instead you level a whole bunch of other stuff.
I'm in a similar boat (i'm 37 myself and have RA) and i didn't have a problem with BD's combat. I couldn't get past the lack of a real tutorial, though. I didn't realize that the first few hours of a game could be more obtuse than Eve online's new player experience circa feb, 2007... but bdo left me even more confused.
I plan to return and give it another whirl once a solid series of intro videos has been put out there.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

I do not have any evidence or any links but I wondered if you started playing games very young and continued to your adulthood constantly pressing the buttons on the controller for hours and hours or rapidly clicking your mouse how much of a toll does that take on a person's hands and connecting ligaments and muscles and such. Does it not have any deleterious effect ?
I started playing relatively late in my life when I became a stay at home mum. I am around 55 years old this year and I use a G600 logitech mouse and generally macro everything to it. Even with it I am not as quick as a younger person I think but I have seen my son shake his hands from constantly clicking the mouse after an LoL session . I think he will have some problems later in life with these types of repetitive movements.
I used to knit and crochet a lot and it would hurt my hands the constant actions and I think these types of games will take a toll too.
It is probably not unusual for people to have some early symptoms if they have been playing since very young and have abused their hands a lot this way.
I am 50 but not having a single problem. Maybe its just experience and good reflexes. Using the right mouse could help. I have quite small hands so I went to a g302 from Logitech.
Played: Guild Wars, AoC, Lotro, CoH, Warhammer, Tabula Ras, Spellborn, Second Life, Rift, Aion, Tera. Playing: Guild Wars 2, WoT
I'm almost 40, chronic smoker, play a wiz no problemo.
Somehow "chronic smoker" and wiz fit
Seriously though, I'm glad the wiz was the first class I tried. It plays in a away that is more similar to previous wizards I've played in other MMOs. So it served as a great intro for easing myself into the game while I was stumbling around trying to figure out the node and housing systems and other new concepts I hadn't seen before. Most other classes confused me at first.
Since that time I've gone on to play Ranger, Sorceress and Valkyrie, which is now my highest level and favorite class. Now that I know what I'm doing, I can handle the more frantic pace of the other classes just fine.
I would highly recommend the wizard or witch to any new players as the ideal first class while learning the game.

that's why you should never stop playing twitch based games like shooters or whatnot. reaction kinda is a muscle, you don't train it.... it goes soft
With BDO i've found that its best to focus on learning just a few combo's and gradually add more to them, there are a lot of combo's in the game and its easy to get 'distracted' by them all, but if you focus on 4 or 5 of them, and only add more when you have got to the point where you don't have to think about what your doing, and just do it, then thats when you can add another combo, you can still use the attacks after all, just hotkey the ones you can't or don't intend to memorize to the 1-5 keys, i think the term is muscle memory, or whatever, anyway, i am in my 50's and its not a problem, its not really a 'twitch' game or one that requires the speed and precision of Counterstrike.
Hi , im over 30 and want to get into BDO because there is not much else on the market atm.
I am however worried about the combat system.
How fast paced is it for someone thats a bit slow with reflexes?
Can I pick a magic type caster class without having to use the keyboard for all skills? or having to jump around the screen?
Well over 40 year old here with rheumatic pains in my right hand and no problem at the action combat. You do need to keep an eye out for the monster/playerclass mechanics that you fight though ;-)

The damage to the tendons in my hand, connecting my index and middle finger, will attest that prolonged use of a mouse will cause serious damage to your body.
Thankfully, BDO's combat system isn't click spamming so it doesn't bother me, and the ability to autorun between waypoints is a wonderful feature that allows me to rest my fingers.
At almost 36 I dont have the reflexes I once had at 18. I tried some of the games I played growing up and I can tell you games like ninja gaiden I cannot do as well as I was when I was young. Hell even street fighter and mortal Kombat I am not as good at anymore. This is why I stay far away from Action Combat systems.
We are seeing this in sports too where players stop being as effective in a game as they were in their younger years. Look at the NHL for example, more and more players that are over 30 are finding it harder and harder to get contracts and keep playing. A few of the best players are still playing like Joe Thornton for example, still a force in the game yet he was better several years ago. His game play over the last few years has gone down due to the age at which players hit their prime.
This is true about everyone. When you hit 30 your body changes and does not make you as reflexive as you once were. This is what these games that are designed for a small market dont understand. Their younger group will get to a point its too much for them and the market will not be replaced by other players.
To the guy who talked about mouse problems with his hands- Arthritis based conditions can happen due to a lot of factors. Besides that your back can hurt a lot with bad posture. Your arms, hands and fingers can develop symptoms due to the way they rest.
For older gamers there are things you can do that might help. Some recommendations:
- If you have a disposable income, getting a sit/stand desk is a game changer for your physical health. They have one in IKEA now that is quite affordable (compared to others). You can sit for a few hours, then rise the desk to standing, for an hour. It's really good for your back.
- Get a good ergonomic mouse. Get one that fits your hand. Forget all the DPI crap. Get one that feels really good. Even if it's not cool with 24 buttons.
- Get a TKL keyboard. Removing the numpad from your keyboard allows the natural area between your left hand (mouse) and your right arm (smaller keyboard footprint). It also cleans up your desk. I highly recommend it.
- Make sure you're not doing things that encourages bad posture or sitting. If your monitor has no height adjustment, the monitor might be positioned to low. Buy a little monitor stand, or vesa mount it on a Ergotron (if you can afford it. They are really nice). You could also upgrade your monitor. Make sure to get a monitor with good colors, viewing angles. Not all IPS panels are created equally.
- If your PC is placed away for you, and you have cord based headphones, make sure you are not sitting inappropriately due to stretched out cord. It can really hurt you over long term sitting proper. Get some wireless headphones or a 3.5 mic jack extension.
- Eat healthy. Don't smoke. Millions of people have anthritis so bad they can't close their hands (no gaming essentially). It's shocking how many people have this. Really take precautions. It's not fun doing 3 cryotherapy three times a week because its almost impossible to do anything.

Magic based classes in the game are the best option if are slow with reflexes. Most skills on all classes are combo based (directional keys + mouse buttons) but mages are more laid back. Keep in mind that you still have to be alert and actively dodge and link combos for maximum damage, but mages are definitely your best choice in BDO. Even better if you play with friends so they can tank while you spank because like every game, mages here are squishy too.

Rheumatic, not arthritis... I have no problem closing my hand, the pain comes when my hand (and mostly pink & ring finger) is open (for a longer period of time). I'm very happy with the auto-walk option in BDO from time to time, even when I loathe auto-walk to start with Also need to add that my right hand (and again pink & ring finger mostly) are cold like hell while I'm in a decently warm room and I need to wear gloves, even now with the start of spring and being 10C outside (and even then my hand is pretty cold).
No I don't smoke, I eat healthy and my cholesterol is okay. I'm under medical care to figure out what exactly is wrong with my hand (and body as a whole).
But still with this 'restriction', I have no real problem with the somewhat fast paced action combat BDO offers

Everything in moderation, except time.
I would also say that "how you use your hands" is also important.
When I was a Classical Guitar major I got bad tendonitis as I was doing things that my teacher told me to do but that weren't really right for my hands.
Once I learned how better to use my body that went away.
There are plenty of musicians who played well into their old age and playing something like, say, Piano, is far more complex than using a mouse. Horowitz comes to mind.

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
