I would like to describe my thought process when looking into a AAA title and really for that matter even an indie title.
I think to myself, how is this game different from the other AAA titles I have played or seen in the past?
when I watch videos of The Division, when I read peoples descriptions of it and when I see adds for it I see I dont see anything that I havent already experienced and I even see a lot lacking and what I DO see are the things I am either exhausted from more than a decade ago or are things I flat out have never liked ever (like cut scenes).
so more of an FYI perspective for you
I don't write anything or correct anything for people like you. Point being.. you haven't experienced this kind of game. Not even close. What game have you played that is close to The Division? How is it close to The Division?
Lol - you know your not a newb when you stop buying games. How did anyone not see how dumb this game was shaping up to be from a mile away?
Define "Dumb". I mean it's critically rated as a good game. Gamers seem to believe it's above average since it hasn't been completely emasculated on metacritic. I sometimes think that some people put games this imaginary pedestal which is, realistically, unreachable. What game do you have on your pedestal? What's a "Great" game for you? What's not "Dumb" Give a couple examples of what you're looking for or games in the genre which you feel do "it" better.
thats the other thing.
these reviews from companies like gamespot are basically paid for and part of the marketing. After one plays for abou 10 years they start to notice that the games that are basically copy and paste of what they got before are getting 9 out 10 and then one day they play a 'good' game that is low rated or not even reviewed at all and their entire world view changes. That is how it was for me
but to be fair its also just in general the 'type' of games people like. after playing military style shooters for 5-10 years I kinda got bored with it.
I think it's a common myth that people are paid for reviews. I think it's been done here before to death and goes all the way back to print, so it's nothing new. However, we do have a great medium now in metacritic and the difference between the vote of people (7.3, 7.0, 6.4) and the critics (8.0, 7.9, 7.8) on PS4, XBONE, and PC are relatively similar (+/- 10%) minus that of PC players. On top of that, the game has to overcome the Metacritic Paradigm which says that the more popular the game, the more hate. Of the critics, 80% gave it a positive grade (over 70%) versus less than 1% poor (1 of 106 reviews, which was a 42 by the way).
Of the USERS side of things, of the reviews that I can actually see, 42% of users posting unpopular reviews gave it a zero (0). If we were to extrapolate that, it would indicate that 10% of users across all platforms gave The Division a 0/10. That's 312 people. I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. Hence, people go in and post 10s just to offset the zeros posted. Thus, we've got a source which is as tainted, if not more tainted than a paid-off media could ever be. Honestly, Metacritic is like a perfect example of social experimentation. It totally goes to show that the way they portray the Post Apocalyptic world in The Division is probably pretty accurate.
Now I can respect that you don't really like the military shooter thing. I still haven't managed to find my way through Call of Duty Black Ops 3. That being said, you're essentially saying that you're pre-disposed to your grading of the game. Kinda makes you respect the discipline it requires to be a journalist, right? Remember, that it doesn't really matter if it's been done before, you've got to review games on their own merits. Otherwise, reviewing boils down to "COD Clone", "WoW Clone", "LoL Clone", etc. It's almost pandemic the mass generalization of games, so what do you do? Bottle of Pills? Bullet? Play a game and enjoy it? I really don't get why people subject themselves to the pain of playing a game they hate. I mean there are so many options. Yes, a game will get old. It will get repetitive. It will get boring. So you move on.
Honestly, I see some of the comments with regards to graphics (not on here I don't think) and I shake my head at how spoiled some people have become. All that after a thread right here on MMORPG praising how closely it resembles actual Manhattan. Just never happy I guess.
PS: In case you didn't pick up on it, that wasn't entirely targeted at you. It quickly became a general statement on the state of gaming.

Defiance. The combat and the loot system are not really that much different.

I usually go by metric scores from users.
which in the case of The Division does not make it the best game mankind has ever seen ever but rather 'Mostly Positive' last time I check. seems reasonable

Defiance. The combat and the loot system are not really that much different.
Defiance, while a TPS, isn't a cover shooter. That in itself has vastly different mechanics. The loot system is quite a bit different ..with some similarities.. but the stat system is quite a bit more robust in The Division. My gameplay of Defiance is limited, but I got the gist of it during my short play time.
More importantly it was asking the person specifically that said "I don't see anything I haven't already experienced and even see a lot lacking" I mean.. I'm asking them, specifically, what games have they played that are similar.
Defiance may have some similarities. A TPS and a cover shooter are different game types though. Cover shooters are inherently more tactical.. you can't stand out in the middle of nowhere and expect to survive in most cases. Level disparities notwithstanding.
The point I'm making here is that a lot of detractors can't clearly identify a game they have played with similarities.
Most cover shooters are Console titles. That in itself marks off most of the PC crowd from the list. GTA V has mediocre cover mechanics at best, but plays nothing like The Division.
I played the open Beta for about half an hour and could already tell the game wasn't for me. There are too many scripted encounters/battles, bullet sponge enemies, and worst of all the game is extremely repetitive. And the world seems empty with little interaction with other players and none in PvE combat areas (unlike a game like Destiny for example).

The user scores are very difficult to use as an objective gauge. I'll usually look at some middle-of-the-road reviews from users, but I really don't think that a score is indicative of how good or bad the game is. As mentioned, it seems like the number of 0/10 a game receives from users is directly proportionate to the game budget. I mean let's take a look at some of the highlights. "3 Years for one of the worst downgrades ever seen, repetitive, and 20 hours to get max level, that's just not worth $60. Not what was promised at all, nothing new and way too repetitive." - Gaaracl.
Thanks!! Try bowling, it's probably less expensive fun
"I am just amazed about the power of money. This game was launched march 8 and ALL of the critics waited until march 11 to let us know their opinions. Too sad." - beibman.
Wow! Insightful! Sad thing is that 8 of 67 people found this useful.
"no single player - no story - no offline mode then score = 0 , i love only offline single player story mode , i want play without internet connection ! please put offline mode with story ........................." - JAX85.
Sweet! Love the reasoning. At least he explains his grading criteria.
"The very definition of mediocrity. Bland mechanics, shooting feels uninspired, missions are mind-numbingly repetitive. An unsuccessful mishmash of tactical shooting, RPG, and MMO; Ubi should have picked one and stuck with it. Wait for this game to drop in price, or borrow from a friend..." - RedRexXx.
Sooooooooo, the definition of mediocrity is 0/10. Cool bro! Good work!
I think that the IDEA behind giving people the ability to rate or review games is great! I just feel like a vast majority of people are incapable of reviewing something objectively. Either that or it's just attention whoring. "Oooo!!!! Look at me with my 0/10 rating!!! I'm so edgy and angry!!!"

that is a fair enough assessment its just not one that I agree with. I think on average player review scores is the best aviable indicator out there. better than one guy who is being assigned a review at gamespot.
The review is also specific to the TYPE of game. so not a lot of Wurm Lovers writing reviews for COD or vice versa but on average I believe as a default a 'crowd' approach is better than a 'controlled by a few' approach

I totally agree. I love the idea of leveraging a crowd over a select few. However, it's probably worse than figure skating and even figure skating removes the highest and lowest scores. I'd love to see what the scores looked like minus 0s and 10s. If they let me do that, I'd be a happy camper, I think.
You have to admit that it should take a awful game to receive a 0. Like clipping, falling through the world, crashing, deleting your hard drive. Honestly, 0 isn't a very objective review at all. That just gave me an idea. Thanks!

I just have one question for those that agree with AJ`s review .... Did you play the game at all until max lvl and beyond???
I think that question is in all cases a big fat NO.
If you played this game beyond max lvl you know all he is saying is NOT true at all.
You cant make a review with only 1 or 2 hours in this game at all, Loot drop is completely different as he says it is, boss fights are complete different for different bosses you can always see that you are doing damage and it suppose to be hard, you dont complain in other games that Bosses are hard, you would complain if they where to easy also all different factions if they cross paths are gonna fight eachother so the world isnt empty at all it feels alive and looks really like NYC (this is from alot of people that lives in NYC or has been raised there), The Dark Zone is as it supposed to be Chaotic and dark and full of dangers that you dont want to go in unprepaired.
The only problem atm for me is that i did it all and i am waiting for some new stuff they bring out, I am mostly a PVE person so you dont see me much in the DZ ... But i do have alot of fun in it when i group with friends in it.
The game as it is now, is the Core game as it should have been from launch, it has been tweaked and now its only waiting for more content so you have a goal to keep coming back every day .... and I think these changes are comming very soon

I have watched several of AJs reviews over the years and I am not what I would call a "huge fan", maybe my gaming tastes are not close enough....
BUT.. no one can say he is afraid to call out bad or badly made elements in games, when they are present there for all to see.
Which puts him ahead of about 95% of other "professional reviewers", including those here at MMORPG.com, who will not, by and large criticize a repeat paid advertiser. Big titles by advertisrs here, for instance, almost universally get a higher rating than what the players give. Why? Because an unsatisfied publisher will never buy ad space, again.
(The 1st Commandment of Gaming Journalism: Thou Shalt not Criticize the Paid Advertiser or Denigrate His Products.)
AJ might not be the most articulate guy, or always have the best taste in gaming, but AT LEAST he is honest, and not for sale like the rest of the gaming press.

That review you posted is someone that doesnt like 3rd person shooters at all, he doesnt like a story in games at all (if he wanted a story he would read a book), he doesnt like a tough boss he wants it to be realistic that he can shoot a boss with just 1 headshot ... and he says its too easy ... what does he want exactly an easy game or a harder game ... i dont know what he wants but its not The Division and that was clear in the first second he loaded the game ... he doesnt like a TPS so he post a review about that and that bosses are hard, thats all this review is, nothing about the rest of the gameplay at all ..... and how could he he only played the beta and that was very empty, nothing to do but one mission.
Do you think he likes any MMO or TPS with a good story ... NO ... he doesnt like stories remember so every game he plays with a story he dislikes.
@SEANMCAD: Completely edit your responce to my post by deleting your reaction and post a completely different one is ... *sigh* ... just be a man to leave your reaction as is and post below another one

AJ's reviews, like most other reviews, should just be viewed as an opinion and used as part of the process on whether or not you think a game is for you or not, personally i think he pretty much nailed it, but again he scored it higher than i would have, but thats due to personal preferences, and thats something you have to bear in mind, and why 'numerical' values assigned to games can be misleading, far better to just explain what things you like, and what things you don't, and of course its not like people all like and dislike the same things, or even to the same degree, personally, i think its a mediocre game with very little to commend it, its certainly not the game that was originally advertised, which is a shame, but perhaps inevitable given who made it, they do have a bit of previous.
Again he makes reviews for click bait for sheep like you to follow. For every "Angre Joe" review there are 10-20 positive reviews. For every sheep who claims what you are claiming there are a 10000 who disagree who have actually played the game not just the beta.
A few fun facts that shows how the game is doing for the shallow minded sheep who want to believe AJs review is more then click bait.
-You still are put in queue during peak times
-Matchmaking is instant a matter a fact there is a glitch where you can matchmake and have 20+ in a group at NO point is there a pause in adding people through matchmaking.
So you guys enjoy being the shallow minded sheep AJ is exploiting because with all the content free and paid they have planned just for this year you guys will be crying for a long time about a video game you don't play.
I would be foolish indeed if i relied solely on the review of just one youtuber, as it happens, i watched several. Unit Lost, agree or disagree with them, but its an unbiased opinion, which is what most are looking for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAUSZH3CWd8 Total Biscuit, one of the biggest youtube critics out there, and also by reputation, totally unbiased. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Vgl448Ccg
So before you start accusing people of being shallow minded sheep because they don't like the same games you do, bear in mind that people like different things, and disliking something you like, doesn't make them wrong, or intellectually challenged.
To be fair you have no way of knowing if they are unbiased or not.
They could be paid and you'd never know.
That's why people shouldn't take reviews seriously.
I have watched countless Joe videos,he used to be really good and still is mildly good.He has become a sellout,he does reviews now for BIASED money,Star Citizen was likely one of his first biased reviews.I say this because he acted like Star Citizen ONLY in it's most infant stages was going to be the next game sent down from the heavens and it was WAY too early to make any such predictions. Also he made it sound like he just loves a SC type game like no other, well he loved it so much he never mentioned it again for almost 2 years.
I still have not much idea on what he really wants from a game but i can say without doubt he does understand game design and knows about as much as most people.SO i fully respect most of the points he brings up in his reviews.
Spot on reviews are FULL of negativity because in reality games are designed TOO FAST,TO CHEAP and half assed, you are NEVER going to get fair value from your game. Most people now a days fly through games MAIN core in 2-12 weeks, not much value there from a MMORPG if you ask me.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
To be fair you have no way of knowing if they are unbiased or not.
They could be paid and you'd never know.
That's why people shouldn't take reviews seriously.
I think the key is self thought.
If I read a review and in the review it says 'most innovative thing ever' well the natural first response should be 'ok' examples. then if examples are provided one looks at their own past gaming history and say 'ok is that innovative by comparision? hmmm' etc
same thing with these videos.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
I am having a blast playing The Division. I dont care that the character creation is subpar, it has no bearing on the game itself. WoW's character creation is subpar and it is still the biggest MMO out there.
Joe lies when he says it is all about beenies and jackets. You do get to change how you look with the different styles of stuff that drop but that doesnt affect the game play. I consider that just an extra.
The true fun is using tactics against the hard or challenge mode mobs (soon harder ones with the Incursions) and the fun in the Dark Zone fighting hard mobs and/or other players.
Everyone has their own opinion and their own style of game they love. I enjoy The Division and find it sad that many people will not get this game because of AngryJoe and his childish "reviews."
I had a friend who decided to not get the game because of reviews. Last night he finally watched me and another friend play and has now just bought the game.
Good for your friend. Just try it out or find a friend who has it and watch them. Like I said reviews are just opinions and they can say they are unbiased all they want but you'd never know.
I might watch it but there is alot more depth than these "reviews" are saying.

I didnt say you need to complete the game until you like it, I said you cant make a good review until you know all the Facts, so people that just play it for an hour or 2 or just play a beta need to make it a First impression review and not saying that the whole game is like they experience it in just a few hrs
Angry Joe have people thinking that all you do is grind for hats and jackets, first of all hats, jackets, pants, and shoes are cosmetic items and no one grinds for them. You dont even get most of them from enemies, you get them most from trading with random NPCs out wondering around or from a vendor.
He says he wants to see his cool gear like body armor instead of Jackets, so why doesnt he just take the jacket off?
He says shooting a flare in the sky for calling helicopter is not in the game, yes it is thats what you do in the darkzone. And he says that the area from the trailer is not in the game like that view of the bridge, yes it is in the game, its the zone you play in the intro. Only difference about that area from the trailer is that its not a darkzone area, im guessing it wont be a darkzone area until later update.
He also complains about how the looting animation from the trailer is not in the game like when he opens a box, do you want to go through a animation every time you find a box for another purple?
Hmmm I might need to watch this due to all that misinformation.
So every good review on the Oculus Rift is also paid for right? It would be a hypocrite to say otherwise FYI. You do know you tubers like Angry Joe get paid for by clicks right? So he gets all worked up and makes a negative review about a successful, poplar widely positive game so people like you will click (so he gets PAID) and spam his link on sites like this that is full of the people he is looking for to click ( so he gets PAID) on his link.
This = paid review. I dunno but alot of misinformation in this "review:.
To be fair you have no way of knowing if they are unbiased or not.

I think its why they market to younger players with not as much experience
So is that what the Rift is doing? I mean they have the worlds largest marketing platform behind them so by your thought process they are marketing the Rift the inexperienced gamers. Ok got it.
BTW nice bars.
thanks! I like those bars too.
so with that lets get back on topic
As OP and 2 sides to read left... I allow it!
After reading those pages, can anyone negate the bullet sponge argument and has managed to uphold the realistic tom clancy thing? If you take all previous Tom Clancy games into account they are realistic and mean more or less one hit one dead. So is there some hidden easter egg that makes this viable in a Clancy setting ?
Another thing... both sides pro and con had solid arguments while I would love to see some pro youtube vids after all those con ones. Especially because most cons were beta vids so I assume the pro have an easy time providing videos of the release version.

Another thing... both sides pro and con had solid arguments while I would love to see some pro youtube vids after all those con ones. Especially because most cons were beta vids so I assume the pro have an easy time providing videos of the release version.
1) It depends on 1 - your build and 2 - how you play.
If all you care about is to make things less bullet spongy and more realistic, go full on DPS and do only normal and hard mode missions. You'll take virtually no damage and you'll kill things in 1 - 3 shots depending on your weapon.
2) It should be easy to find plenty of videos on the division. You can find them yourself quite easily.. but if you want a well rounded view.. look for the videos that are also on the XB1 and PS4... what PC users experience is far and away different than the other versions.
For example... just on the PS4 VS XB1, the XB1 has been much more stable for me than the PS4 in terms of server stability. There was a short stint where PS4 servers went through some growing pains.. XB1 didn't have those same issues.
Also there was a strange lag issue where mobs would run super fast on PS4... it wasn't that they would run that fast, but the lag made them catch up to you.. which only looked like they were super fast. Again, didn't experience it on XB1.
The tearing issues experienced by AJ .. never experienced them on either console.
I have plenty of videos on both my PS4 channel and my XB1 channel.. but I'm not sure how to share them here. I don't doubt there is a way, I just haven't looked into it.
Lol - you know your not a newb when you stop buying games. How did anyone not see how dumb this game was shaping up to be from a mile away?
I think its why they market to younger players with not as much experience
So is that what the Rift is doing? I mean they have the worlds largest marketing platform behind them so by your thought process they are marketing the Rift the inexperienced gamers. Ok got it.
BTW nice bars.
thanks! I like those bars too.
so with that lets get back on topic
As OP and 2 sides to read left... I allow it!

It quickly became a general statement on the state of gaming.

which in the case of The Division does not make it the best game mankind has ever seen ever but rather 'Mostly Positive' last time I check. seems reasonable

Agree with reviewer.

Thanks!

I am saying if you have to vote
hillary vs clinton then you have to vote! your not going to vote for the WORST option because the better option has flaws?
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

'i dont know if I would like to have my eye carved out with an icepick unless I try it and I should not stop until the entire eyeball is removed to make sure'
its a meme that fails on so many levels

BUT.. no one can say he is afraid to call out bad or badly made elements in games, when they are present there for all to see.
Do you think he likes any MMO or TPS with a good story ... NO ... he doesnt like stories remember so every game he plays with a story he dislikes.
If you really want a good review that is spot on in my opinion then watch this one:

@SEANMCAD: Completely edit your responce to my post by deleting your reaction and post a completely different one is ... *sigh* ... just be a man to leave your reaction as is and post below another one
however
saying you have to play the game to completion before you can say you dont like it is a a bit like:

They could be paid and you'd never know.
That's why people shouldn't take reviews seriously.

I might watch it but there is alot more depth than these "reviews" are saying.
Seems like he didn't play it or:
This = paid review. I dunno but alot of misinformation in this "review:.
Yep.
