I never heard of Shenmue until some old fart came out during the last E3 and announced he was making another one.  I was like another what?  What is this?  

I'm a consummate gamer.  If I haven't heard of it at the very least, then it didn't make a very big splash.

But then again, BESM... not my thing.

Shenmue I sold over a million copies after it's release in 1999. The issue with the game was that it was released on the Dreamcast. The limited install base hurt the game.
Some developers believe Shenmue paved the way for open world city games like the developers of GTA III have said. Shenmue was a pioneer in many game systems that were built upon to create some of gaming's biggest successes.  

Yep, IMO it was one of the best games of it's generation.
