A new service has cropped up that may be of interest to readers in the form of Steam Crate -- basically Loot Crate for Steam Games. For the price of a monthly subscription, ten random Steam games will be added to buyers' collections. Each crate is guaranteed to be worth £30 (~ $45 USD) and some £100+ (~ $147 USD).

Interesting idea... but there's so many really, REALLY bad games on Steam. My luck I'd get a variety of Choose your own Adventure text games and some Anime Virtual Novels :/

Getting a lockbox of games gives me a bad feeling.  Like someone said they want you to still buy games and they want a steady income from subscriptions.  I'd rather they let you choose which games you want in your lockbox out of a given list.  What if it's games I already have or games that don't work on my pc?

I'm only ever interested in "certain" games.

however, there are people who just love "games". All shapes and sizes and this would probably be for them.

Sounds like a bad deal to me. You will not get "premium" games and the fillers will the stuff that Jim Sterling reviews on a regular basis.

But if you like the gamble aspect... sure give it a stab. =)

You might not believe this but people LOVE continuity programs.  I know because I work with many of them.  These guys are doubling in size each year and more and more are popping up.  The problem I see with this is that there is no "physical" component.   People like to see new shiny stuff (mostly crap) show up in a box once a month.

Not sure it will transfer to virtual goods..

If I were going to do this I would instead chose the Humble Bundle Subscription plan. They seem to offer fairly decent games on those. So they are wrong about there not being a sub based digital game service. There is another one that I cant remember that does an indie title them a month that they create a custom game box to put with it among other items.

They should call it the dump crate.  That way you can get a big steaming dump of games every month.

I haven't even played the ones I've bought myself never mind getting a crate full every month. What happens if you already own half of them?

Honestly it's just way too much for not knowing what you are getting before you pay. While I'm sure you will get more than what you pay on steam, sites like BundleStars offer packs really cheap and you can see what you get before you buy. For example they are doing two new 10 game bundles, one is $100 value for only $4 and another is $143 value for only $5.

If Steamcrate is charging $20 for 10 games, they really need to show what's in the crate a month ahead of time.

oh look other junk box idea that only stupid buy lol

Oh yes it's not like the humble bundle things aren't already pretty much filling my library with 7/10ths of useless boring or plain "I'm edge" indy games.

If I wanted pixel games all the time.. I'd of made a time machine to go back to the nightmare 80's.

Hey guys - All I ask, is that you give us a try before you judge. Enter Coupon Code: MMORPG to get 10% Off for Life :)

We've had tons of happy customers, that have got alot of decent games, Some have posted on our facebook, that they had games such as Mortal Kombat X, Fallout 4, Resident Evil, Farcry Primal etc. We try to make things as fair and random as possible, all games we purchase or aquire are put into a  giant list and randomly mixed up several times before being split into groups of 10, Ready to send out.

Of course its not going to be for everyone - But if you're up for discovering new games whilst having a chance of getting Triple A titles all for a fraction of the retail cost, then give it a whirl for a month. Another great idea a few people have been doing, is using the games for content on their youtube channels and whatnot.

If you have any questions, Ill be happy to answer!

I buy from Steam when there's a sale so I get the games I want at a discount and I'd rather continue to do that. Don't want to buy and get games just for the sake of it.

    Hey guys,

I’m here to share my experience with SteamCrate, so I’m posting this in every relevant thread to spread the word.
It was my first (and last) subscription and here’s how it went:

Let’s start from the beginning. I made two steam crate orders and then I got an email from them saying that my credit card is a fraud and telling me to send them a picture of my ID and credit card. Awesome, right? At first I thought it was a scam, contacted them, apparently it wasn’t. So I had to send the photos to them in an email (non-secure connection). By the way, their email also said ,,we will need this information within 24 hours, or your account may be terminated” and you know what’s the funny part? They sent it to me at night and I had to work the whole day. Stress-free beginning of a new subscription, right?

But that’s not the end. The FAQ says ,,we will send your order on the 16th of every month. As long as you’ve subscribed before Midnight on the 15th of the month, then you’ll get it the same month.” When you order a crate, it automatically becomes a subscription so if you want to cancel it, you have to contact support. Or, in other words, write an email because they don’t have a contact page with an online form. That’s what I did, and I also explained what the FAQ said and that I wish to cancel my future subscriptions and not the current one-month orders. And at that time the whole SteamCrate company seemed to me as if there were a couple of dudes sitting in front of the PC screen wearing just their underwear. Really. That’s basically how I pictured them because of how they spoke to me. Unprofessional communication.

But wait, there’s more! The 18th of the month came and I still didn’t receive the games. Had to write them an email (again). The support (the same guy) answers really fast, less than a day, so consider it a plus. I got the keys sent to me, all written in HTML in one simple email as an answer. The guy only said ,,It should have been sent already. Anyway, here's a copy of your games”, that’s all. No polite forms, no goodbye, nothing professional. Just a dude in his underwear, let’s add a coffee stain now.

Oh, and the games are simple. Absolutely no blockbusters. Those were mostly indie games with positive or mixed reviews; the best ones had around 200 reviews on steam (just a couple of games), one game had just 1 review, the majority had less than 50 reviews, all of them cost just a couple of dollars each. I’d buy such games for someone who knows and likes only tetris. A waste of time and money. The whole crate showcase on their webpage is an absolute bullshit. Oh, and the games that you get are sorted in an alphabetical order as if they took a whole alphabet of games and chopped them up into bundles. My first order had games starting with B,C,D, the second order M,N,O,P.
I also found a reddit post where a user noticed the same pattern of an alphabetical algorithm, here’s the link https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDealsMeta/comments/4ymjyd/steamcrate_is_not_too_great/

This was a very stressful subscription that was forcing me to communicate a lot with the support. I wouldn’t wish that to anyone. So, naturally, I’m never subscribing to them again.

    Hope I’ve helped.

    This.
There are plenty of games you can buy at $1.99.
I will wait until I see some reviews from subscribers confirming it is worth it.

Yeah that sounds more like it.
I don't think we gonna see many Dark Souls 3 in those boxes, if ever.

I buy lots of games, I mean lots.  I like to support indies and developers I trust.  I would never do this.  You have no say in what you get at all, it is a horrible idea and waste of money.  Also I already hate the advancement of gambling into gaming with loot crates to begin with.  Just read the post from Johnattan above me as I would be willing to bet that experience will happen to a lot of people.

Humble monthly is a better deal, yet even that has the downside of getting games you don't want. I'll stick to bundles, so you know you're getting something you want.
