A number of people played the hell out of the free open beta and will not buy the game.
This is me.
I really enjoyed the game, but just like TF2, it will only appeal to me for a couple weeks and then I will quit.
I don't really view $40 worth it for a 2 week game. Well, I kinda do, but the microtransaction part of the game makes me not want to support it. They said "current heroes" won't need to be bought with currency/real money. That means future heroes will need to be bought. No thanks.

Not sure if it will last forever, but as of now all new playable characters will be free
Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming multiplayer hero shooter game, will receive new heroes and maps at no cost to players.
Jeff Kaplan, the game's director, revealed the game's post-launch plans for added content in a developer update video addressing community concerns, which you can watch above.
"When we patch a new hero into the game, we want it to be free and not as DLC," he said.
Did people think a Blizzard game wouldn't have a healthy population? It could be flaming dogshit and Blizzard fanboys would still lap it up. Overall, it's a pretty mediocre experience. Low skill floor so very appealing to the masses and money pumped into it to appeal to the 'professionals' even though the skill ceiling is also very low.
Can't wait to see the likely comparable numbers after launch in this thread for all the people who claim they won't get nearly that much just cause it's a free beta. Star Wars Battlefront open beta had 9.4 million and that was a poorly received game critically, yet it has sold over 12 million copies. Just imagine how well a game that is pretty overwhelmingly positively received critically will do. (Also one that is 20$ cheaper on PC) Especially one with a trusted company behind it like Blizzard VS EA's Dice that hasn't had a great track record recently.
Yeah, I traditionally haven't been the biggest Blizzard fan, but after playing the open beta of this game, I wholeheartedly predict it will be their biggest money maker in a year or less. It will outsell WoW: Legion by a large margin, and will likely usher in the future of the company.
This game is really good. It also has a ton of potential.
Overwatch will generate over 10 million in sales worldwide Guaranteed.

3/4 of that number will be console sales.

Yes, like most multiplatform releases, consoles will likely outsell the PC version. There are far more console gamers then PC gamers. Did you have a point?

Ok so you didn't. Thanks for your contribution to the discussion.
That's a hell of a lot of people, only 2million-plus played the battleborn beta.
Btw, Mei was a blast to play in the beta; huge crowd control.
Yea but what do you expect? It's a Blizzard game. They have a massive following of fanboys who would jump all over anything they released. Not saying the game is bad or anything, but they'd have to seriously do a shitty job to not have a shit ton of people in their open beta.
Overwatch is a game made by blizzard. That quote alone sells 1 million copies. People idolize Blizzard like people idolize the iPhone or the people who think the only board games in existence are monopoly, Sorry, and Clue. "Scooby Do" is the only kind of animated entertainment

They actually said no heroes will ever be sold at shop. And further they said no shop is planned at athe moment.
They will most likely monetize the game trough expansions.
But maybe some selling of skins and other cosmetic items..

Er, maybe qualify the "3rd world of gaming" comment? Blizzard's track record at producing deep, fun games is more consistent than I think any other developer you could name.
So it's a little more like people who think the only boardgames are Twilight Struggle, Pandemic Legacy, and Puerto Rico (some of the deepest boardgames out there.) And it's not at all like the 3rd world.
Their brand is a brand, but it's a brand built by the strength of their games.

not once was any queue in place, or anyone waited more than 1 minute to find a game.
Has that ever been an issue in a true lobby based game? Just curious, as I've never seen it before. It's almost always a case of the more players the faster you get matches.
They are hosting all the servers. So it means they have been ready to quickly pump out such massive amount of servers without any hitches or slowdowns.
Aside from that there are many other things that go wrong and usually do in such stress tests.
I dont think anyone was doubting Overwatch would have alot of players...Blizzard could re-release 1970s pong and it would have 100 million players...The thing is that doesnt mean its a good game though....Kinda like Hearthstone....They make a terrible CCG then overhype it and market it like crazy but its a bad game.

"Good" is subjective. You think it is not a good game does not realy mean much to me, or others.
If you look at metacritics, Hearthstone is at 88, and certainly a "good" game if you define that as the aggregate reviewing scores.
I liked the beta, but it's not worth €40 for me. Maybe for €20 i would have bought it, and by the time it will be €20 (20 years or so, given Blizzard price policy) there will be no point in buying it.

More so riding on a legacy.
Their point was that brand recognition and media is going to sell the game considerably more than the content it has to offer, rather similarly to the last few title releases Blizz has made for a while now.

Still best game developer by far! I will buy it even though I am not the biggest shooter fan. This company needs every support we can give, because it is the only company which is really caring about their customers and the quality of their games. I am excited for WOW expansion too, since no other company is able to make good mmorpgs these days. Flood blizzard with money, they earn it and they are the only ones making good games.

This game is really good. It also has a ton of potential.
Gearbox said that Battleborn was tracking slightly ahead of Borderlands 1 in the same timeframe, this is actually a bad thing.
Why?
Because Borderlands 1 actually sold terribly when it was released. Word of mouth got around and then sales shot through the roof.
