Blizzard will give anyone who sees the World of Warcraft movie a free copy of WoW

Transmogs

Blizzard, in contrast, has come up with a method of tying the upcoming World of Warcraft movie directly into the already-existing World of Warcraft game. First, existing players who just log into the game between May 25 and August 1 will receive new transmogrification (transmogs for short). These are visual skins that make your weapons or armor look different, but don’t actually change anything about your character’s in-game performance.

The bigger prize is the free copy of World of Warcraft that Blizzard is handing out to anyone who buys tickets for the movie. WoW is currently $19.99 for a version of the game that includes all previous content and expansion packs with a maximum level cap of 100 and hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of content. Put differently, Blizzard is willing to give you a $20 game if you go and see a movie for significantly less than that.

There are, as always, a few caveats. The above promotion is for the United States and will be offered through Regal, United Artists, and Edwards Theaters locations. Digital copies of the game will be available “while supplies last” (there’s no word on exactly why the supply of a digital game would ever run out). Other countries are receiving various promotions of their own — Brazilians can receive a free copy of WoW if they order tickets from Ingresso.com, and Australian and New Zealand customers can score a ticket by buying at a participating HOYTS cinema.

One oddity about the promotion that we’ve asked Blizzard to clarify is whether or not a month of game time is included. On the official Blizzard page, the US and Australia/New Zealand rewards only mention the free copy of the game, while the Brazilian page specifically says that the game includes a 30-day free subscription. This has always been the norm with any MMO; your first month of play is always bundled in the base game. We’ll clarify whether or not game time is included for players when we hear back from Blizzard.

Blizzard isn’t the first company to test this kind of packaging, but it’s offering a much better deal than what Ubisoft has scraped together. Ubisoft is offering a variety of “packages” for its upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, but it’s also charging money.

Lol, this is like one of the best cross-marketing things ever. I saw the AC promotion as well and "Bravo!" If these sell well enough I think we'll start seeing plenty of video game movies come out. Wouldn't mind a Borderlands movie anyway :)

I heard rumors that Nintendo was selling off their stake in the Seattle Mariners in an attempt to get into movies. I'd rather not see another Mario movie, but Zelda would be awesome!

I wouldn't care even if they gave handful of gravel worth $19.90.

Now, where's my classic WoW server..?

I won't see their movie, or play their game... unless it was because other people talked me into it maybe.

Intelligent cross-over marketing.  I was, more than likely, going to view the movie anyways so this just adds to the incentive ... possible fun.  I'll have to play the game again to see worth subscribing though.  There's a lot of good "free to play" MMOs nowadays.

I would imagine the majority of moviegoers that would see the movie.... are WoW players?  I didn't really play WoW and I have no interest in seeing the movie...  Throwing a game onto it.... which is WoW....  isn't sweetening the pot.   I didn't play it before, why would I play it now?

Because they're not marketing it to you? I know humans tend to be ego-centric, but you do realize that new humans are constantly born, and they get older over time. Some of those humans may be at a point where they will see this movie and get the game for free and become fans of the game. That's how companies stay in business, by finding and attracting new customers. Otherwise you're on a slow path to closure.

    Hmmm....

I imagine WOW players and fans are going to be the only people to see the film so why they would want to have a free copy of the game...if they already play....I don't know seems kind of redundant.

Like most advertising though I guess it will appeal to people who don't actually put much thought into daily events and just get 'advised' what to do in life.

I think you missed my point entirely.  I'm basically stating that a WoW movie appeals to WoW players.....  It's highly unlikely it would appeal to those that don't play WoW or haven't....  so giving a game away that they already own is pointless.

Just because I used the word "I" instead of "They" shouldn't change anything... it isn't hard to extrapolate my 1 personal comment to a wider audience........

lol, maybe if theyd apply that $20 towards Legion id bite but otherwise I already have an account. Hoping im wrong but I doubt the movie will be any good.
  • dave6660dave6660 Member UncommonPosts: 2,699
I'm skeptical of how much appeal the movie would have outside of it's current or former players.  Not to mention the game is 12 years old which might cause many younger players to pass.

The movie could bring a lot of former players back though.

Ah, I get your point now, makes total sense which is why comic book movies only appeal to the people who have read those particular comic books. Got it. I'll let Hollywood know. Brb.

    I actually disagree.

I know plenty of people who saw the Lord of the Rings movies that never read the books and generally aren't entirely "into" anything geek culture. They just though it looked good.

I think many people who aren't gamers will see the movie. Heck, I'm not a WoW player at all (I've tried so many times but sadly can't stick with the game for more than a few days) and I'm going to see the movie.

Yeah. Just like it was going to be F2P for Cataclysm, MoP, and WoD. I'm sure with Legion it's actually going to happen.

So, they make a movie for people who played their game, then offer a free copy of said game to those who go see the movie....who went to see it because they played the game?

I think Hollywood already knows the reality!

Comic book films have a huge - demonstable -general public "fan" base when it comes to films and for that matter TV. By contrast WoW has a (relatively speaking much smaller) game playing fan base and when it comes to films no history at all. Which is  maskedweasel 's point.

The promotion is an attempt to reach that a wider film base - at some cost of course.

Warcraft has a huge problem. Nothing to do with how good, bad or indifferent it is either. Many, many movies this year are in the same boat.

In April The Jungle Book launched. So what? Glad you asked. If you can look up the box office takings of the other movies tht launched in April in the US TBJ's gross revenue was greater than that of the other 73 added together. It buried everything - and those that launched in early May as well. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/monthly/?view=releasedate&yr=2016&month=4  Same story overseas basically.

Finally Captain America Civil War has pushed it down to number 2 in the US chart.

Now Warcraft won't have to worry about TBJ - although it will probably still be in cinemas! Nor should CA:CW be a huge problem heading into June. So no problems right? So why might it struggle?

At the end of May Alice Through the Looking Glass - whose predecessor took more money in 2010 dollars than TBJ has done so far - launches.

"Lesser" blockbuster films like X-Men Apocalypse - which launches at the same time - or the third (recent) Ninja Turtles film will have a rough ride. As for other films .....yeah.

So the question is: will this promotion win over "non-WoW" cinema goers. Will they choose Warcraft over X-Men, or Tarzan, or Ghost Busters, or Independence Day, a Spielberg flick called The BFG, the sequel to Finding Nemo, the next Ice Age, the next Star Trek. Not to mention the dozens of other films with the same problem that will also be fighting for viewers attention. Several of which grossed more than Alice. Tough summer.

In honor of the Warcraft movie invading theaters June 10, all players who log in to World of Warcraft® between May 25 and August 1 will receive a set of movie-inspired transmog items!
