I totally get this. I know I should not be clicking hotbars. . especially since I have a Naga. I have moved away from it somewhat but still find myself doing it on occasion. I feel your pain OP. Just because a game is action oriented - I don't see why they can't make the hotbar clickable.
Seriously try to move away from it if you can. Once I got used to using the buttons on my mouse or other key bindings it helped a lot. Even in WoW using the number row is better than clicking.
I don't see why it can't still be included as an option though.
Clicking action bars is never going to work on a game where you have to aim at your target. I used to do it with the old tab targetting games till I realised that it was so much faster to use the number keys. Once you've learned to use number keys to activate powers, you'll wonder how you ever did it any other way...if you choose to try of course.
lunawisp was my peacebringer in City of Heroes. She lives on, in memory, as my gaming id
It's just another pseudo mmo game that has a dumbed down UI to cater for the console. "It's an action game not tab-target!" - Do you honestly think players don't have to move their characters (and pretty damn quick) in full UI mmo's?
Eso has at least made an effort to accommodate more skills, as it has skill bar swapping - but it's obviously not as fluid as having a full UI on the pc and pretty clunky. Then there's the potion wheel, which comes across as a pretty desperate attempt to try and fit more into the limitations of people playing with the controller.
If they really wanted to accommodate this mmo for pc play - then it's simple: give pc players a full UI. "but that would give them an advantage over consoles!".....No it wouldn't - See how FFXIV manages it and do it like that.
Being a clicker is bad in any MMO. Take this as a sign to learn how to not click. It's not hard and you'll have more fun when you get used to it. Keep in mind you can rebind the keys to keys around wsad that may be more comfortable.
I'm actually surprised no one has said it but the PC version is fully playable with a controller also. Controller PC support in game is still considered a beta feature but it's there and it seems to work - at least I don't see a lot of grumbling about that in the forums.
So as long as you're not religious about the PC master race it's another possible solution.

100%. . using an "mmo" mouse like the naga is even better. I can move with all fingers on wasd etc. while activating abilities with the mouse hand. I also find the 123,456,789 phone pad layout very easy to remember since I am a little more spatial oriented. So I keep my most used ability on 5 in the centre, buffs on 10,11,12 etc. Love it

If people are offended by clicking, you've just suggested the ultimate heresy.
The controller works pretty good. Or at least my Logitech F710 works pretty good. It doesn't feel like a tacked on kludge. If I went full console I could see using it no problem. I'm just used to kb/m. The only thing that use to annoy me is how account names were displayed instead of character names. I think they fixed that this last update.
I'm so used to playing PC games with my beast that I actually find controllers awkward in comparison. I've been using this for several years now. The little hat switch in the middle of the thumb buttons holds 5 key binds all by itself:

Every game isn't made to cater to every possible play style - just the way things are. In ESO you can click around to use various items, but really only out of combat due to the mouse aiming. At first I didn't really like the lack of hotbars, but now that I'm used to the radial wheel and swapping my two sets of skills, it is all second nature. It's definitely faster then clicking a hotbar and if you keep the same item type in the same quickslot position your muscle memory will take over at some point.
The game was designed to be (somewhat) close to the combat from the Elder Scrolls single player games. It was also designed with a controller in mind. That's why you aim with the mouse and why there's only 6 skills you can use at once.
I understand that having the screen move with your mouse can be a little tough to adjust to at first, but you really can adjust quickly to the game-play. I kept wanting my cursor on the screen when I first played, but once I became familiar with the combat (charge up attacks and blocking with mouse buttons) it really wasn't a big deal. The cursor pops up when you go into menus or inventory, so it isn't gone for good. As others said, you don't need to be a skilled typist when there's a limited action bar.
I think you'd adjust to the game-play more quickly than you'd expect. If you don't want to adjust, then I don't think there's a good way to make ESO into the kind of game you want it to be.
ESO has controller support in options/gameplay beta controller. You may find this easier to use as it uses the same setup as the consoles. I've tried it with Xbox One controller on PC and it plays well.

yea do this problem solved on xbox or pc i always used a gamepad.
Every game I have played thru the years took me time to get use to it. Get a new KB or Mouse and it takes me time to get use to it. Golden rule use to be give 2 to 4 hours and you will be a pro at it. Which works will for me. Every game has different ways to play it, learn it and once you do enjoy it.
Sometimes it's not always about what you can see or hear but what's under the hood of a game that's most impressive. Between those thousands and thousands of lines of code, magic happens. Sometimes the most amazing feats of gaming wizardry happen without you even noticing.
I used to be a long time clicker and played that way for many, many years. Oh and I was a WASD turner as well. It took me quite awhile to change my ways--years in fact. ESO at first was fairly awful for me but with time I learned to adapt. I played all the single player games and was damned if I was going to not play them all---keyboard configurations or not. I felt the same way about BDO and the key combines but with a bit of practice and learning a few moves on at a time, it became much easier. Not saying that BDO was my favorite game keyboard wise (too many gymnastics and overall not my favorite game) but I'm a very old dog and managed to learn a few new tricks. I would just give it some time and master a few things at your own pace. I do think that ESO is a great game and for me personally, it was worth getting better at a more action based game. And I'm fairly old without the best of reflexes.
OP, I do get where you are coming from. I tried introducing my older friend to ESO and it did not go well. She was trembling with fatigue and stress after a few hours and never went back to the game. I was so disappointed because I wanted to introduce her to this lovely world. She won't touch it unless it plays exactly like WoW. Such a shame. Good luck and believe me, if I can do it. so can you!!
Your cursor locked in the this game during combat because there is no tab targeting so you have to use your mouse to target the mob your fighting or the person your healing, so how could you maintain your aim, release the mouse cursor scroll down to your ability bar click the button before the target has moved. Because basically in this game everyone is dodging and moving constantly.
I just dont see how that style skill activation is even possible in this game unless you can convince all the mobs and all the players to stand still and not move around so you can cast a spell or skill on them after you line them up in your crosshair.

It's an action combat game, like it or not, There is nothing more to it.
Actually its not an full action combat game its a hybrid and a bad one at that.
i disagree it's bad and i would love for you to give me an example of an mmo that has a good action combat system, one that hasn't been shut down that is.
holy balz me thinks the OP needs to branch out a bit and play some other games that are not 'winthin the box' that is about the size of a shoe box and appears to be getting smaller
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
i assume you are talking about not being able to click a action bar...
Well have you looked in to keyboard shortcuts. like q for skill 1 and w for skill 2 and so on.
being a clicker is a bad habit unless you only have one hand.
I disagree, I've play with various styles of controller support depending on how I feel like playing. Whether it be keyboard, keyboard + mouse, mouse and/or controller. No game is so hardcore or fast paced as to require someone to button push only.
It's boils down to what the developer will allow/support. Obviously if you can't click buttons in a game with a mouse you won't be able to do so. But I don't know a single game that I've played that doesn't allow it.
I've even taken games that don't even have native support for console controllers and used them in games like WoW and EQ. Games with 20+ buttons that a player needs to manage and completely their hardcore raids without issue.
The games you play (tawess) aren't as hard as you actually think they are. They're a walk in the park that can be done easily with any style of gameplay, albeit within the ability of the user.
P.S. I can click my mouse faster than I can press a button on my keyboard (12 clicks per second) vs (9 button presses per second on a single button).
You may ask, "why the hell do I care or should that matter?"
Well, if I can click a button 25% faster than I can press a button. Then I'm going to be 25% faster to complete an action through clicking than I would be if I was pressing a button. In a competitive mindset where min/maxing is everything, one would take the faster action.
You should try it out, maybe your button mashing is actually a "bad habit". Maybe you yourself are slower at pressing a button than you are clicking your mouse. Either way, your logic is ignorant.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how someone plays. As long as they're able to succeed who cares?
umm are you clicking the same button over and over with your mouse? fraps that and post it because i call bullshit. you are gimping yourself by clicking with your mouse because you have to move the mouse cursor over the ability to click it.
not only that but if you use your mouse to move more efficiently like in many mmo's, that will hinder you as well. can you still do it? yes.....will you be on the same level as a player that utilizes hot buttons with similar skill? nope.
again, show me you clicking your mouse over numerous hot buttons 12 clicks per second, that i would love to see and i'm quite confident it's impossible.
oh and while your at it make sure you are moving around with your character and not just standing still....good luck! LOL
even if you just randomly clicked buttons with no real rotation or method behind it would be hard and likely impossible, especially with more than 10 buttons.
yeaahhh If I recall exactly correct in Darkfall I had gotten up to 100 skills and the vast majority of them I needed access to in a micro second during combat almost always while also moving forward keeping at least one finger on WSAD. Many peoples experience with different games types are about as small as an adult child who has never left the basement and as a result their world view on what games do and can do is extreemly limitied

This weekend I decided to give ESO a try. There seemed to be a lot of things to like about the game, but I will never experience them. Because something that has been present in the other dozen or so mmorpgs I have played seems absent here:
The ability to click on images on the screen to cast spells.
Try as I might, the game seems to be oriented to good typists or to people with a mouse that has 50 programmable buttons.
I am not a skilled typist and my mouse has 4 buttons - 5 including the wheel (which is more than I want).
I never knew this was an issue. I have been clicking abilities on my screen since 2002.
Am I missing something? Why did they do this?
Oh, and to any who may say Learn to Type or Get a Better Mouse, I have not needed to do either of those things from original Everquest forward. And I am having no difficulty playing other games today.

Toolbar staring is one of my least favorite things about old school MMO's. Even my favorite ones like LotRO always bugged me when I found I had to be hunting and clicking through combat. I was able to curb alot of it with programmable mice and KB's, but it really feels like you're missing half the experience when you have to focus on the bottom 5% of the screen.
MMOs are progressing, which is all fine and dandy if progress it's what you're looking for. However, one should not ignore his roots. It would not have been too much of a hassle to allow people to click on skills. A simple option in the gameplay options should have done the trick. The landscape content isn't that hard that a clicker would be unable to complete it.
The keybinding will only matter to those who want to compete. Newsflash; some of us don't. We have jobs, women, children, hobbies other than our computers, ... I come to relax, enjoy the scenery, chat with kinnies/guildies and do some fun casual stuff. Can I mouseclick my way through the content. Yes. Will it be faster keybinding? Ofcourse. Do I care? Not the least. That epeen stuff about dps, speed runs through raid content, 2-shotting fellow players in pvp? Big deal. come talk to me when you drive a bigger car. Does having a bigger car make me win? Nah. Does it make you lose? Nah. It's a matter of taste, a matter of priorities. Some want to be good at this, others don't, they prefer to be good at other things. Stop trying to be competitive all the time. There will always be one aspect of life where he has you beat. If you keep up that attitude, you'll feel 63 by the time you reach 36.
Some come to seek a challenge, some come to relax, neither playstyle is better, neither one is right or wrong. The only party being dead wrong tin the whole discussion? Those claiming that playstyle A or B is the only way.
Oh, and Zenimax is a tad bit off too by not having what should have been a basic option. I'm a keybinder myself, so the lack of it does not affect me, but I can see how others feel different about it. Perhaps there's an addon out there that supports the function to show and click bars.

How do you aim a reticule with your mouse, and click an ability with that same mouse, at the same time? Exactly, you don't...
The game isn't designed for clicking, no amount of forum crying is going to change that. You have two choices:
(1) Learn to play the game, as is.
(2) Move on to another game that better suits your style of play.
