any time after try some new space sim I am back to play Freelancer !
Back then, there was also a Templer clan in Freelancer. Their trademark was to not chat/speak to anybody. Looking at your avatar, you don't happen to have been one of them?
How on earth did you guys missed Star Control 2? There is a freeware version of it with HD graphic and better music called Ur Quan Masters. It's such a great old classic game, you really need to have a pen and paper to write down because there's aint a shiplog you can read
Yea man this one was literally the only thing after Starflight that is even remotely worth mentioning. For those young people the Starflight games were the best games I had ever played untill KOTOR. But as far as space sims go I still don't think anything comes close except for SC2. You had a starmap and had to go to each solar system and scan planets then mark those which were inhabitable. Then you would land on planets and mine resources, collect plants, collect animals. Meet new alien races and setup trading with them or have wars depending on the situations. Starflight 2 even had time travel. Yea I know there's this golden oldie thing with people sometimes but these games really were golden.
I forgot to mention you had a crew and they had to be trained and you selected races. Some of them didn't get along and would fight and when they died you had to get a new member. Good times...
Privateer was the game that utterly cemented my love for the genre, though I've played and enjoyed many space sims.
Of the ones I've had the most fun with, for one reason or another, here's a list off the top of my head:
Wing Commander 1, 3 and 4 Tie Fighter X-Wing Freelancer Elite Frontier
Beyond those, I've pretty much played all the others - excluding some of the more obscure indie titles.
The genre more or less died at some point in the 90s - and I've yet to experience a space sim that truly captured my attention since then. Elite Dangerous came close for a little while, until I realised it was more or less barren of content.
The reason Privateer is my favorite game is that it was the first time I played a sandbox game which also had an engaging storyline. Before then, with games like Elite and X-Wing - it was usually one or the other.
Freelancer was also great - but for some reason I never finished it, as I exhausted most of the content in multiplayer. I regret that.
It should come as no surprise that I have great hopes for Star Citizen - which also happens to be the only game in general that truly excites me in terms of potential. I think it's the only game in development that's trying to evolve gaming to a new level.
Goes without saying that it could fail in a big way, but I think it has a good shot at becoming something special - even beyond what most people might suspect.
Just wanted to give honorable mention to Project Nomad. Made in 1993 had a rich story and you had to interact with aliens by holding conversations. Which seems to be lacking from most space sims.
Everyone here seems to be too young to remember the Wing Commander series, lol
That's what got me hooked on space sims 20 years ago...
X-Wing vs Tie fighter, Privateer, Freelancer and then the whole space sin genre just died around 2002, with only Egosoft persisting as a space sim developer of note. Played all the X-series up to X3:TC.
Moo, GalCiv, Distant Worlds, etc. are not space sims, they are 4X games.
Seems that Star Citizen's highly publicized development has rekindled interest in space sims, seeing as there's a rash of them in the pipeline now. Good times !
The Wing Commander series was the only space series I really enjoyed. Eve for about a year or so, loved the story line in Homeworld. I've tried a lot of other ones but nothing held my interest.
A game I first enjoyed, Starglider 2.

star citizen. it grabbed my attention 5 years ago and lost it 3 years ago.
IMPORTANT: Please keep all replies to my posts about GAMING. Please no negative or backhanded comments directed at me personally. If you are going to post a reply that includes how you feel about me, please don't bother replying & just ignore my post instead. I'm on this forum to talk about GAMING. Thank you.
I love space sim games but for some reason I have found few and far between that I can play for more then 3 hours. Here's the list of the ones that completely grabbed my attention.
Starflight 1,2 If you can get it to run right and can ignore the graphics these games are worth playing. Space Empires IV I didn't play any other but this one was really fun. Rebel Galaxy This one is similar to Space Empires but with newer interface. Starfleet Command 3 This isn't really a space sim but you can at least build a spaceship.
OMG how I miss great games like StarFlight 1 and 2. I remember being so excited when I was first able to enter the cloud nebula and actually survive in SF-2. I feel sorry for kids today that think todays games are so great because of the fancy graphics. If they only got to play some of the older games back in the day like SF they would be very disappointed in todays games.

Yea there was no internet or way of knowing everything back then. The first encounter with Humna Humna, Spemin, Dweenle. Then the wormhole that put you back in time. You would go in there and get to the other side only to run out of fuel because there was noone to warn otherwise.
My uncles in SF1 used the black egg to destroy the home planet of the Elowin. Then they couldn't finish the game because the black egg was needed. Those games were so rich with dialogue that I remember so much and these new games you can't even hold a conversation with an alien race.
I can't say there are any space "sims" out there. About the closest might be Kerbal Space Program. I think what was meant was space "themed" games. If that is so, I would go with upcoming titles like No Man's Sky and Star Citizen. Past games would be Tie vs X-wing and those series of Star Wars themed "space" games.
Well, it depends on the given definition of "space sim". When I hear "sim" or "simulator" I tend to picture flight sims and being in a cockpit.
The two games that really pop out of memory from "a while back" were:
1) Sentinel Worlds 1: Future Magic This game was a mix of all sorts of things. Truly an awesome game. I guess you could argue it was more of a "space RPG" than a direct sim, but there was space travel and ship combat, ship boarding, planetary landings and expeditions, etc.
2) I always remember Wing Commander 3( I think it was 3 ) with Mark Hammil back on the 3DO I think. It might not be the best WC, but the live action acting and cool factor just made this game really stand out at the time.
Obviously, the X-Wing and Tie games are on the list for space flyers, as well.
TBH, when it comes to 4X games in space, I've always ended up feeling somewhat disappointed in those. They all tend to be lacking in one area or another; none of them ever feel complete.

if that is true no wonder Space Sims suck. I highly doubt most people outside of this forum think Eve is a yardstick for anything.
Have a look at http://www.dualthegame.com/ where you should read through the blogs. If you prefer to listen, goto https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLP268ZfwD7HluVGxn_PZmHInJBzoOCjcP a channel, where they discuss Dual Universe. Take your time, the game is not even in alpha yet, but promising.

Freelancer and I-War i also liked quite a lot (and most likely 80 % of the list mentioned above).
I have not yet seen Space Wolves being mentioned ... and lets not forget Descent Underworld.
There are some top space games in development right now, but they have been extensively covered in other threads.
Have fun

Eve is the yardstick by which I measure all other MMOs, as I feel it's the only true MMORPG in the genre.
