Elite C64 version is still my favorite.
With a screen full of Thargoids and everything going in single-frame-slow-mo mode ? ;-)
Until you clear the area with an energy bomb ....

    Have fun
Just looked at this game and I have to say they did extremely well with what was available.  Now all the games concentrate too much on making trees look pretty instead of gameplay.  Back then all they had was gameplay so it was creative and fun.

Which is why we're all still playing Elite every day, right? :)

If you mean Elite Dangerous - then you must be aware of how it looks slightly better than Elite C64.

Point being: making things look pretty doesn't have to mean gameplay is bad.

I can't even play the new one its just sitting on my hard drive taking up space right now.  But I didn't answer you because that really didn't warrant any kind of response.  Games don't last forever and to expect as much is just plain silly.  There comes a point where you get tired of a game and move on with your life.

So, what you're saying is that there's a reason to make new games - and to improve them?

But you're denying that spending time making them look good is improving them?

I'm just curious, because you seem to think that developers are making things look pretty for no reason.

The problem is they concentrate so much on making things look pretty that they have ignored gameplay.  For example SC spends IDK how many hours just making it so your character climbs a ladder into the cockpit and then ED makes it so you have to land the spaceship manually.  These are things that literally waste hundreds if not thousands of hours programming simply to make things look better but add absolutely nothing to the overall game.   4k years into the future and you have to manually land a spaceship?

Space games should be about exploration of aliens, planets, asteroids, unknowns.... Instead most games planets are just for looks and you fly by them.  Aliens have minimal interaction if the game even has them.  Planets don't have life to explore or harvest.  These are things that every space sim should have.  Instead they give us a vast universe with aliens that you cannot communicate with and everyone looks human.  Then if you can land on a planet you are mining resources and there's never any plants or civilizations to study.

Star Trek had it right and most space sims ignore this.  To explore strange new worlds,  To seek out new life and new civilizations,  to boldly go where no one has gone before.    Most of today's space sims have completely ruined this idea.  The only things for discovery are raw ores that already exist here on Earth.

SC isn't even close to being finished. Let's talk about the complete product if and when it ever gets here.

As for your point, I concede that a lot of games focus on production values more than game design - but production values isn't exclusively about making things look pretty.

It's more about the spectacle and story presentation. For some games, such things enhance the experience - and for other games, they would have been much better served with more design work on gameplay.

I don't think games like Witcher 3 or Last of Us would work as well if they hadn't focused on production values, for instance. Those games needed a powerful delivery of story - and such a thing is very expensive.

Obviously, that doesn't mean those games are perfect.

However, games that focus exclusively on gameplay certainly aren't perfect either.

In fact, I'd rather have a good story than a game with excellent gameplay but no point or experience beyond mechanics.

Ideally, I want plenty of both.

I would like to verify that Starpoint Gemini 2 is good game.
Also would like to verify that Freelancer is also good game.

If you haven't tried these games then definately give it a shot.

I would like to mention Homeworld 1,2 as excellent games.

Of course Freelancer series is great as well as Homeworld, which the EE became availble on Steam and is a great revisit, more recent i have been playing Rebel Galaxy which is alotta fun love the broadside action ..

as far 4x go there can only be one still as Distant Worlds is far superior than anything else offered imo..

Void Expanse is an excellent indie as well as Space Nomad 2

First it was X. Then it was X2. Then it was X3. That is all. My single player life exists like this: Newest Elder Scrolls game mixed with newest Fallout game mixed with X3 forever and ever.

There is just something about building a conglomerate space company, attaching stations and owning a ton of merchant and cargo ships and using that money to buy two destroyer class ships and a carrier class ship, load them up with the best cannons and filling that carrier class with the best fighter ships, and going straight to the Kaak (hah!). Sometimes I like to pick on the Xenon sectors too. There was also that time the Spliit got mad at me, yeah that was good.

Also, every now and then I fall asleep and wake up in the middle of nowhere somewhere between sectors, and probably half the time, oddly enough, there is a pirate station flying discreetly toward another sector.

I wonder if anyone has ever won the lottery with those pick 1 of 3 tickets NPCs sell on random stations.

    Currently Playing:

    Fallout 4 (Xbox One)

    Puzzle Pirates (PC)
    Dreadtooth on Emerald Ocean

Well, phrasing the thread title in past tense is sort of an invitation to nostalgia.  OP didn't even ask us to qualify the titles as "good" or "bad": he simply asked which ones grabbed our attention.  No need to be snarky about it.

actually the more i read these the more I think I must have missed some key point about the games needing to be in the distant past to be a qualifier for the question. If not then yeah, I hold to my statement and my reasons of it.

Do you meet and converse with aliens in those games?  I mean real space is boring as hell.  So to have a real life space simulator then the only thing you are going to do is study rocks and gather minerals.  It is alien life that makes everything exciting and not many games have captured that feature.  Yes they captured the graphics but they get an F for originality.

I mean really if you find it fun to spend 10 minutes trying to land on a space station then more power to you.  But a lot of us think thats wasted resources when its the exploration, advancement part that is most enjoyable.

    its delisional
