It seems like an age ago that this game was being super-hyped and all the PvPers were swinging from its nuts. Now, it seems mostly forgotten. Is it my imagination, or is what promises to be a relatively simple, primarily PvP game taking forever to develop? Is this just another crowdfunded game stuck in perpetual development? Or is there hope on the near horizon?

Play what? What is there to play? Last time I logged in, it was a bunch of bots running around in a field with extremely bare bones combat.
Is it a Yakov Smirnoff opening for the Spin Doctors at the Iowa State Fair shit-show?
Speaking of launch, mid-to-late 2017 would be my guess.
Personally i am very interested so far in CU, i'd rather they get it right than try and rush it out of the door, i am fairly confident there will be a good game produced, but i'll wait until its finished. I've read too many stories about players who have got heavily involved in closed and open Beta's to the point where, when the game released, they were burned out on it and subsequently didn't enjoy the game as much as they would have done if they had played it for the first time in its released state. O.o
We know from past experience that fully staffed and funded AAA MMO's took anywhere from 3 to 5 years to develop on average.
So a MMO project that is being developed by an indie team with 1/3 of the staff and haphazard funding will quite likely take 6 to 10 years to fully complete !
Hence the general perception that KS-funded MMO's are in "perpetual beta"...
The video game will be released when its ready to be released. Go live in reality for a bit until that time.
It's the only game that I know of,that's actually being built upon a engine that can handle proper massive amounts of players, and not the overstretched multiplayer engines of current MMOs that melt as soon as there's a few hundred players on our screens.
It is also implementing full server side checks for physics and cooldowns etc etc.
It might not have the thousands of generic, unimaginative, and boring quests that you find in other games, and that's great, because these are such a waste of money and development time.
Also,it's a small team working on a budget,we all know that.
And they shouldn't rush the game out.I'm tired of unfinished games launching with myriads of bugs and problems.
I really hope they will succeed with their goals,I expect nothing from the big names of the industry, they are out making clones of the same game for 10 years now, using off the shelf,3rd party technologies, applying terrible monetization models that have turned most MMOs into online casinos.
The only advancement of the genre can come from small dedicated developers like CSE.
Perhaps they shouldn't pitch products that way.
I assume they can save time by not having to build quest lines and lots of art animations for monsters/mobs and the AI for that, but last I heard/read they planned to also have some pve elements so maybe they will have to take that on as well.
Anyway, I too hope it comes out soonish!
Sounds like you are an early alpha tester too, so you have access to the same news and info I do which clearly communicates their progress so why ask here? For the drama?

The positive thing I can say of MJ is that he owned the issue, he came out early and said that his original release estimates had gone out the window and gave some needed realism on how long it would take.
I agree with your launch guess, hope we get beta this year.
Such optimism is good for hype and the sales. What would be the "realistic" counterpunkt of that? Say, imagine people in early 2013 giving money blindfold, based on some concept art and very rough engine demo...for something that might possibly launch 2017 or, god forbid, 2018.
That would certainly make many of them think twice, not to mention that one could reverse-engineer "promised" 4-5 years into 6-8 of real time, well known ratio of expectations vs reality in MMOs - including AAAs. Such Kickstarter could easily fail, in some parallel universe.
To clarify couple things - I am not criticizing, and I would do exactly the same: being optimistic and enthusiastic (sometimes, even overly) about stuff you are selling shows passion and helps sales, the way I see it - pluses of that are, in this case, easily overweighting drawbacks of later refunds and broken deadlines.
I believe that something similar happened to WAR, if you remember it was made in 3 years (better to say, it's early beta which EA then pushed) and hilarious thing is that it was actually supposed to launch in 2007 - now, that would be a world record in AAA MMO making, and with quite some distance.
Could you please enlighten us, what did the game do for 9 months after Kickstarter ended before going into full production?
Otherwise, you can just replace 2.5 with 3 in my argument, doesn't change much.
