The OP appears to contend that one reason people solo in mmorpgs is that they are shy, or don't know how to approach other people. I'm sure there are some people like that. In a truly massive game there are people of all types.
But I don't think that's the main reason people like to solo. The main reason, imo, is that joining up with others involves making a commitment. Going where they go. Doing what they do. Playing the way they want you to play (sorry we need someone spec'd this way, not that way). Rolling on loot. Need to take a break? No time for that. No time to watch the cut scene either. Etc.
I personally like grouping, but I am not always able to make that commitment. There are also days I just don't want to.
By the way, you could solo in old school games. It was not as easy as it these days, and it was not as rewarding, but you could. So this is not a new issue.
