Seems kind of weird, if the Vive is outselling the OR by 2:1, and Vive sales figures seem to indicate there have been about 77k Vive sales, then the implication is that less than 40k OR's have been sold? If true, then things are looking dire indeed for the OR, if in all this time, they have not even managed to sell 40k units. Or the whole Vive outselling the OR by 2:1 could be BS. O.o
Pricing, pricing, pricing...
OR has problems. mangement problems and Vive is an amazing product however at this time these sales figures are related to the fact that Oculus is having serious problems making their headset available to actually buy.
Why the below is happening really should not be a shocker Option 1: you can buy it Option 2: you cant buy it
gee why is option1 outselling option 2? I dont know
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
and I want to remind everyone here that a few months ago many people where saying VR will fail because of cost, HTC is the most expensive option, so before you get religiously ridiculously involved in 'VR wars' consider that because I am going to have a blast pointing it out

Newsflash, you can buy them both.. easily... online.. in person in stores... again, I would bet many if not most of the sales are resellers. Even in the article you posted the install base is much lower than the hardware sales base. When you look online you have online retailers reselling the Vive and the Rift anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars OVER what people are paying from HTC... for brand new systems... with stock at nearly twice the rate.
Oculus can't catch up on their "stock" but anyone who wants once could have always bought one.. anytime. The sad thing is, the demand isn't as high as people think it is, so resellers are still buying them out but they are sitting on the online market for weeks.
This goes for both the Vive and the Rift. Meanwhile, the rumor mill states that samsung may be about to give yet another round of VR sets away when the Note 7 launches. They just can't give away enough of them...
and I want to remind everyone here that a few months ago many people where saying VR will fail because of cost, HTC is the most expensive option, so before you get religiously ridiculously involved in 'VR wars' consider that because I am going to have a blast pointing it out
Thats the funny thing... people are noticing the low low numbers and realize, they are both failing. If Rift has sold LESS than the vive.. and the vive has sold close to 77K... how far is that away from Zuckerbergs message when he said they needed 100 MILLION in sales to become profitable.
So... lets pretend that both the Vive and the Rift made 100K in sales (neither did, but lets play pretend) 100K in sales sounds preeeeeettty effing low when your goal is 100 MILLION units. Sounds like failure to me.

again the problem with the Rift is that its very often you cant buy it.
I think right now if I was to look at the consumer response to VR I would look at the Vive because its the only high end one that appears to be able to actually be in stock. having said that, its also the most expensive option so there is that negative factor as well.
Personally (and I know you will disagree) I find it unfair to say something is selling poorly when it cant even fill its own pre-orders with actual charges yet. I do want to make clear for the record (because I know you love VR console wars) that this is a bad thing. The entire pre-order problem that Oculus has is a huge fail HOWEVER, it also answers why people are not buying them, because they physically cant for the most part.
Regarding VR as a whole I still think its reasonable to wait 12 months after the Sony PS4 VR is out before saying its a success or a failure

Over 53 NEW sets from plenty of retailers.. NO backorder ALL in stock.
You want to buy it from Oculus... fine .. I won't fault you for that.. but don't pretend you can't buy one.. because you easily can.... they're everywhere. Even in my city I can go buy one locally from local retailers that bought out what stock they had just to resell it.
If you want one.. just go get one.
And if you think the Rift will do BETTER once PSVR releases you're sorely mistaken. PSVR might sell well initially, but Rift will continue to miss it's mark.
Remember they expected to hit 100 Million units by next year. But it sounds like they aren't even close.
How many people in this thread missed that it's a survey of Steam users?
This is not what you might call "double blind", and doesn't really tell me much of anything at all. It's like saying 'there are twice as many Google Photo users as iPhoto users on Android'.

1. can buy the Oculus easily 2. the vast majority of the Oculus games are played via the Oculus store

VR seems like a complete waste of money. Wake me from the dead when they develop Star Trek-like holodecks. Until then, I will not be sold.
Thats what people said about cell phones.
You mean that thing that is actually useful for communications, actually solved a problem, and doesn't actually make people vomit after 5 minutes of use?
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"

Nobody said that about cell phones.. they were essentially car phones of the next generation and everyone wanted them. VR... it's hard to find anyone that I know in real life that wants a vive or rift.

VR is useful, and solves many problems. All the better that it has potential entertainment applications.

I am willing to bet a pay check (which is a large sum of money by the way) that the majority of people who decry VR also decried smart phones back in 2005.

same problem movies do?

and this is why i thnk conversations about the 'death of VR' or 'VR has failed' needs to be put on pause at least until people can actualyl buy PS4 VR (i know people arent doing that in this thread but just in general statement)

What problem does VR solve exactly?
Problems (plural).
Just to give you a brief example: my brother who is in medical school got to experience the Da Vinci machine during his surgery rotation that makes use of VR tech; it was initially developed for the military, but now allows a surgeon specialist to perform delicate surgery on a patient remotely, from across the country if necessary.
There are many others I can think of.

VR doesnt need to solve any problems. There are countless examples of ridiculously successful industries that do not solve problems. Hollywood being one example that I am sure someone will exploit and explain that I am wrong

I would like to hear of the many others. What you're describing isn't really a problem.... that's a convenience. And sean said.. "The same problem that movies do" Movies didn't fix a problem.
Problems are usually difficult or pressing matters that require a solution. Movies are entertainment. Frivolous.

People vomit when riding in a boat. They also put themselves in danger riding motorcycles. But that doesn't stop everyone else from doing it.

I wouldn't call <100k in sales a success either. In fact, I would say that is a pretty bad failure, given how much has been invested into it to date.
That's not to say that VR as a whole is dead, but I think we can probably stick a fork in the current generation "Premium" editions.
