EQ1: Spent more time than I care to admit playing my DE Warrior
CoX: Seriously, if you missed this gem then you don't know what I'm talking about. This game was frakking amazing and drew me in like no other ever has.
SWG (Pre-CU): See CoX but for my sci-fi nerd side.
Tabula Rasa: Great Sci-Fi TPS with some really fun mechanics. Died before it could blossom.
WoW: No reasons necessary. If you've played it you know.
1. Star Wars Galaxies NGE 2. Runescape 3. City of Heroes 4. Eve online 5. Star Trek Online
Now, I know a lot of people will create purely biased statements because of this, But lets be honest with updates, these games were made far better than they ever could of imaginatively been at their launch. I was never a big fan on Pre-CU for swg And I loved every bit of the NGE, I never had a dull moment (plenty of dull people though). Then runescape I've played that game since 2004-2005, I dont think that games ever going to die. I couldn't believe it when City of Heroes got shut down, That was every kids fantasy growing up to be a super hero of their own making. Such a shame. Eve had one of the most steep learning curves I've ever come across, But once I understood it I could master it. And Star Trek Online Every fanboys fantasy game come to fruition. Now if only they could implement bridge combat in Sto then that would have people flooding back. Oh well thats my list, Anyone else have something similar?
EQ1 (both pre Luclin and Luclin -> OoW were equally great) WoW EQ2 (especially around EoF era) DAoC probably LOTRO (although SWG almost makes this spot based solely on crafting/gathering)
I find SWG to be greatly overrated though. Had it had another year or two in development it might have been the greatest game ever. If I were scoring on potential SWG and VG would be 2-3 easily.
Final Fantasy XI Everquest Vanilla WoW Vanguard Star Wars Galaxies
If I had played Ultima Online I imagine that would be here instead of one of the above. LotRO almost made it here.

Star Wars Galaxies Darkfall Online World of Warcraft -----------------------------------(4 and 5 are not too special for me) Final Fantasy 14 Swtor --------------------------------------------- (Honorable Mention to a Non-MMO) Rust
EVE Online. Here's your character. Here's your first ship. Here's the undock button. There's about a thousand different things to do once you undock, but you can't stay here, so GET OUT. Oh and fly safe. o7. No, there aren't any question marks or yellow brick frakkin roads to your next quest tin man so figure it out on your own.
Age of Conan. Upper Left. Lower Right. Up. Use both swords to decapitate him and then kick his blood-gushing stump over and find another unworthy opponent to mutilate. Oh, you don't like the sight of blood or pulling someones head off and throwing it over your shoulder? WoW is that way kiddo. Grow a pair. Or maybe that's why your sword is twice the size of your body. Compensating?
Planetside 1. Look son, you wear a red and black suit and that means you shoot the people wearing purple spandex or anything that looks like a smurf. If you run out of ammo, then grab some off of the corpse's around you; there'll be plenty lying around. Unless you're terrible, in which case you'll be the static ammo bag.
Tabula Rasa. Wildstar? What the hell is that? You mean to tell me we fuck up another game only seven years from now? Well too bad, cause this is the first game that you'll actually like before we shut the doors. But hey, Wildstar is gonna be great!
World of Tanks. You can take your semantics, roll them into a tube and snort this line of "I don't care what you think an MMO is" off of my hind parts. Pull the corn cob out, join us, and have some fun while your raid leader changes their third diaper of the night in the middle of your progression raid.
Awesome Post!
Tabula Rasa was a tough one to see go down. I really loved the potential of that game and was fascinated by where it could have gone. Shame.
I have never tried WoT. I may just give it a shot.
The best times of WoT are long since past. Still, you can play it for free.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
The MMOs I like tend to be completely different from each other, but unique and not like any MMORPG before it. This is true with most games as well. However, they can still share similarities or like SWG/AC are kinda similar (to me), so saying completely different isn't 100% accurate.
So my favorites I list are all #1 in their own way, so no particular order for my favorite
World of Warcraft (I played for years, probably smoothest MMO I've played. A lot of fun, a lot of content. But, even though I bought Legions, its first time I have no motive to keep playing WoW. its not because its bad, but I played since release (then past year off/on) and I'm ready for a new MMO.)
City of Heroes/Villains (SO much fun, this is still by far best super hero MMO. Sure there is Champions and DC Universe, but CoH was amazing. Too bad NCsoft is such an evil company, FAR worse than EA. You think EA is bad? Remember NCsoft.)
Star Wars Galaxies (best pet class in any MMO, well at least tied with the Minion Master guy in City of Villains, both had really good pet classes. And player cities were epic)
Tabula Rasa/Auto Assault (okay kinda cheating combining these, oh well :P)...both AWESOME games. Tabula Rasa still has the best AI of any MMORPG, and it came out years ago. Auto Assault was just pure fun. Too bad they were under NCsoft, pure evil. Don't need a novel of a post about how evil NCsoft treated TR and Auto Assault)
Asheron's Call (want Diablo style loot system? Got it. Sandbox PvP? Got it. Sandbox PvE with optional PvP? Also got it. Huge open world? Got it. Most unique creatures in the MMO world? Got it. Want a pure solo experience? Got it. Awesome group experience? Got it. My first MMORPG (so probably has something to do with it), but it was so much fun. Granted, SWG did remind me of AC in a lot of ways, so not exactly unique as far as my favorites go (but AC itself is really unique).
Currently playing Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online. I'll probably stick with these two for a while, since they are the ones I've been having fun with as far as MMOs go. Otherwise since I've stopped WoW (likely permanently), I've been playing Warhammer Total War, Skyrim (still) and even SPORE (I know :P )
CoV's mastermind was a great class! Loves ninjas, bots, gangs and necros.

Top 5? I'm surprised anyone can put top 3 not top 5....
#1 SWG before NGE happen, which was karma for SOE's ignorance. #2 WOW (because it's still outperforming in quality after all the crap that came through last 12 years) #3 Ultima Online, because it was developed since 1997-1998 and still is running with many other private servers with hundreds of players simply because of its amazing combat, fully open world with housing and the many ways you could role play in it.
weren't you banned? what are you doing here? get out!!! just kidding.
