Project Gorgon's endless crafting rabbit hole and why I can't seem to get out.

Abuz0rAbuz0r Member UncommonPosts: 550
I don't know why it won't let me create posts in the project gorgon game forum here on mmo.  This belongs there.

I have to admit, the crafting on PG is so intertwined and dovetailed into combat it's amazing.

I've only played with 2 combat skills so far... Sword and shield... keep it simple right??  I have a skill bar for my Sword skills and a skill bar for my Shield skills.  Enough about that.

I recently found out the crafting skill known as calligraphy can boost my Sword damage and give me access to combinations that do additional damage or make the final move aoe.  I immediately started learning the ability and collecting materials to do calligraphy recipes.  When I do a calligraphy, which usually takes a parchment, an ink, and a reagent, instead of giving me a crafted item it gives me a crafted buff for 1 hour.  The Buff details your combination or damage increases.  A normal calligraphy can stack with a secret calligraphy currently and both last 1 hour.

Simple?  I wish, after using calligraphy a while a guild mate told me if I use a calligraphy bench it'll boost the duration.  Cool, now I'm leveling foraging to collect wood, mining to collect ore, blacksmithing to make nails, and carpentry to put it all together and make a calligraphy bench.  Currently I'm level 24 carpentry and I can make a bench that buffs my calligraphy to 4 hours. They have higher carpentry benches taking it up to 8.

These 2 buffs of course stack with my food buff (cooking), snack buff (cooking or mycology), which stacks with my drink buff (mycology, alchemy, or milk a cow)  which stacks with my meditation buff, rest buff, flower appreciation buff, and so on.  The rabbit holes are endless.

There are so many combat styles in this game from using alchemy and combat beakers in battle chemistry.  Moves in battle psychology combat like "tell me about your mother" , various animal combats you can level like fighting as a cow or a pig, traditional combats like bow or ice mage, and so on.   The crafting buffs and combat interactions are incomprehensible, it's a theory crafting wet dream.

My current activity is searching for the recipe for a war gryphon statue in a dungeon so that when I deploy it (5 minutes) anyone who beholds it gets a combat buff.

I could go on about all this, if you're into this kind of stuff don't let this game escape you.

You just alienated about 90% of the current MMO base, which sounds just about right!  Sounds like they are making a fantastic game.

There is a LOT of good "on paper" but implementation is where i feel He went wrong.
The combat system is too locked, especially to gear.

What i strive to see is a return to imo the best combat design ever in the history of gaming.I want to see a possible RDM ,capable of taking on several foes at once where even one would kill a group.I want to see skilled players be the factor,NOT mana bars or gear.
That is why i get so turned off in most every game, system designers have no clue how to create systems,so we get SIMPLE WOWish designs "gear 'treadmills and severe limitations that spell linear game play.
I guess only those that ever had the opportunity to play a Red Mage back in the early years knows what i am talking about.
Although i sound bitter,i am never that angry,i get more depressed,i just can't believe there is not a smart few people out there that can take us out of the WOW era.Having said that ,Eric did NOT copycat Wow at least not fully like everyone else, but in the end it still plays the same with just a few different bars and wording.
I repeat ...on paper,Eric has the right idea, but like other games i wanted to like "FFXIV"i feel it is too late, the core design is embedded forever.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I played this game for about a year when it first launched.  There was lots to like about the game, especially the crafting and all the different combat roles.  I knew someone who was a cow psychologist, hehe.  How awesome is that.

Ultimately the big problem for me was the lackluster graphics and the tedious combat itself.  I remember waiting for a graphics update after a number of players started complaining how the main city looked.  Logging in after this so called update made me realize nothing is going to change.  There was only a minor difference to the look of the game.  I hate that big white box that pops up during combat.  Not being a programmer or anything close to a tech person, I imagine this is due to the engine he is using.  I guess I just don't like it.  I'm one of those players who can see playing an old school game with a modern look and engine.   This is simply an old school game in everyway.  Maybe I'll see what has been changed but don't have high expectations.

Wow my internet was out for a whole day.

I see complaints about gear locking... I haven't encountered this in game.. the gear basically drops based on what you kill to use the monster and what you're wearing as a belt.  If you are using fire magic to score kills and wearing a fire magic belt, you're very much more likely to get fire magic gear... It may require level 25 fire magic or level 50 fire magic depending on the mob you're fighting the stats on the item that drops.  - This isn't 100% because I get drops for skills I never use also.

When I vendor items I'm not going to use, they appear in the used column of the vendor, any items players sell as junk can be re-bought at double that price by other players.  So if I get a gold item with a face value of 684 and I vendor it, I know another player will be able to buy it at 1368 if they want it.  I don't have to feel terrible about vendoring good stuff because I know if it's good for another player they can snatch it up.

If you use a hybrid build like me, sword and shield, you'll end up with lots of drops that require a level in both sword and shield.

The graphics are now running in 1080P and making my graphics card break a sweat.  About 6 months ago the graphics were so bad it was unplayable for me.  It looks absolutely beautiful now.  The animations are getting improved little by little, they're still a tad bit spartan.  Since the game is in beta, there's a lot of substitution going on.... like there's a crystal in a map and it's object is just a big broccoli, like definitely a broccoli the same one as farming..  Also orange plants are a purple flower lol.  It's forgivable because the developer has been working on making the game fun and actually logs in and takes suggestions from players.

Yes, there's 90% of mmos on this sites menu that have you select an archetype, and get in the mining cart and stay on the rails, this game lets you do whatever the heck you want with your character.  As a previous poster stated a psychologist cow... lol.

I was going to be a psychologist pig but I felt bad when i told my enemies they were adopted.

The problem I had playing a pig is an almost complete lack of armor that doesn't also require skill using a weapon.  Because, you know, pigs can't hold weapons in their trotters. And you can't skill up a weapon if you can't hold it. So you're kind of limited to being an unarmed psychologist pig.

That and most vendor NPC's refuse to talk to a pig.  That means you can't buy or sell or craft. But you can shoot fireballs if you can find the materials. And find mushrooms just about anywhere.

Yeah, the game isn't perfect, or complete.  Some features are imperfectly implemented ideas that if you don't like the implementation you should see if there's other things that are more complete you can do.  It's easy to find something you don't like and get focused on it lol.

That is the kind of crafting system all the mmorpg should strive for.

Yeah the community always wants instant gratification and participation trophies. It's hard to find games without those things now.

Depends on what kind of participation and gratification you are talking about. There was a time when people would participate in a 10 hour raid and in the end had nothing to show for it for 99% players other than "ohh we killed the boss" and "shit i spent 1K gold in repair for this raid". That was a horrible thing, part of the reason why games like those lost so many players and game like WoW gained so many players, in games like WoW if you did not get any gear after raid you still got part of gold drop and some other currency that would help you buy some good dears, not as good as raid drop but still good. If players have contributed in content and took the blunt of it then they each and everyone of these contributors should receive some form of reward.
