1) Ultima Online 1997 to 1999 (pre trammel)
-The freedom to do whatever you wanted to do. Or kill or notkill anyone/thing you wanted.
2) Asheron's Call - Darktide Server
-You had freedom to kill or not kill your fellow players, insane pvp, insane amount of mobs and awesome dungeons, monthly updates, 100s of quests for rewards/items etc.
3) Everquest (hugely popular nowhere as good as Uo or Ac)
- This was finally when a MMO really went massive in popularity. The game itself was just average but the popularity made it fun because everyone you knew was playing it.
I can't believe that SWG isn't number one. It should be, I don't know how you can have it fifth.
It was so mismanaged by SOE and so badly released (early beta status), that it is THE guide of 'how-not-to-run-a-AAA-IP-title' and it never ends on #1, just because of the foul history it made.
However, even how bad this game was made & run, I had some of my best mmo times playing it.
