Is No Man's Sky The Worst Case Of False Advertisement You've Seen For A Game?

edited September 2016 in The Pub at MMORPG.COM
After the backlash I've seen since the announcement and release of No Man's Sky and reading these forums for a couple of years, I was interested in knowing if you guys felt No Man's Sky/Hello Games is the worst case of false advertising you've witnessed.

I apologize for adding another NMS thread, but I needed to use the poll feature.

No way, it's by far the most "popular" game that has been through it, so there's a big fuss. Advertising was on the very top AAA level, I would bet NMS Marketing Budget surpassed multiple times what the game really cost to create.

If the core game would have been able to provide a fun experience for people longer term instead of people just getting bored and quit, I don't feel this would have happened, not on this scale.

So this is a complex situation, it's by no means just the fact X number of advertised features are not on the game.

It's a close #2 (# means "number" not this hashtag shit :p) for me.

Brink was by far the worst case of false advertisement I have ever seen. The only game I ever trolled hard on any forum I could find mention of it. The shittiest pile of shit ever shit out of a shitty developers shithole.

Fable was pretty bad. Could just be the way I remember it though. For that matter, Godus was bad. Fucking Peter Molyneaux! Lol

Damn man. Brink was a broken pile of garbage. Terrible memories. I will never forgive Splash Damage for that one, and I hope Dirty Bomb is the last game they ever get to make. I don't remember how it was advertised though.

OMG! Black and White was Peter Molyneaux too!!!

Did he ever do anything that didn't fall short of what was promised?

It was advertised as a story driven game, not a lobby game with limited cutscenes between matches.

TBH for me it worked fine, it just wasn't what was advertised.

Also, I don't see the hate towards Fable or Spore. Am I missing something? Both games were awesome.

I dont think it is.. Those that spent more than a few minutes playing the game have seen a lot of what others say isnt in the game. Then you those that havent even played the game just repeating the same misinformation.

A lot of Bullfrog games in the early 90's.

    Syndicate
    Populous
    Theme Park
    Magic Carpet
    Dungeon Keeper

    Those were all great games.

it pretty bad for sure, not as bad as aliens colonial marines IMO but the difference is that they can fix this buy releasing content, the fact that the devs are rather quite just makes it as bad a ACM, were is the aw, the sense of wonder and stumbling upon an alien ruin or dinosaurs...were are my #^*&$ing space Dinosaurs, this is a game that was too big for its own good, maybe just should have made a small solar system or too to explore and full those with lifeforms, cities, ruins and have some conflicts here and there but the game is just a facelifted minecraft, minus the multiplayer, the customization, excitement, charm and value, I am glad i rented this or I would be rather pissed about too.

To be clear, I loved Fable and Godus even though they weren't as advertised. It's not like he's putting out complete shit.

Yep, he sure did. There was a time when Molyneaux's reputation was solid. TBH, even Fable 1 & 2 were very solid games, despite some minor features not making it in.

Indeed it was, especially in the Amiga scene. A Bullfrog logo on a game box was usually seen as a stamp of approval, a quality game.

So now a game only needs 1 fricking player to be discussed in the MMO forum? Seriously? This site just needs to get rid of the general gaming forum as the mods are non-existent.

Black and White, and Fable are actually good fun (but quirky) RPGs. Even if they didn't live up to Peter's promises, they aren't BAD games.  No Man's Sky is just a walking simulator, very little elements of a game there besides it being a 3d environment. I'm not so sure that it even qualifies to be called game.

I hate NMS and i'm still pissed i gave them my money.

Granted I didn't really follow NMS that closely so didn't see much advertising for it directly from the devs / publishers, but I get the impression the only falseness was the talk about multiplayer. Everything else seemed to be exactly what I thought it would be, based on the limited adverts I had seen.

The main people that seemed to over-hype were games reporters. For some bizarre reason they all got hung up on the procedural generation technique and the nearly unlimited number of planets to visit. Its like they all forgot that procedural generation had been around for decades and always ends up producing the same sort of results (theoretical endless combinations, but mostly producing very similar results).

I'm usually pretty OK with most advertising and hype trains. They all exaggerate and lie but I can read between the lines easily enough. For me, the top spot for false advertising would be a tie between WAR and SW:TOR. Both those games promised some excellent things during development and kept saying that certain features would be in, endgame would work certain ways etc. Come release, both games were missing a lot of stuff that was promised.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman

No. Basically, modern advertising is all about this. To hide as much information as possible from the buyer except the details you want them to know. They won't even feel guilty unless the case goes viral and everybody complains in mass against the company. In that case they try to look like the poor guys that tried to make a game and advertise it with the best intentions in at heart (pinky promise, and the make up of the screenshots, downgrading, etc. is part of those good intentions)

Now that I suffered facing the reality that my withrawal rights are virtual (they are there but in practise they are almost non-existent) I will become much more skeptic than I used to be.

No.  I'm not a practicing idealist.  Most of the time I don't try to see the world as how I hope it would be.  George Carlin said it well.  "Inside every cynic is a disappointed idealist."   He probably wasn't the first person to say something along those lines.

When you take that cynicism, pessimism and selfish thought process and use them to filter anything said by someone who wants something from you that is when you start to see through the bull shit spewed by marketers and advertisers.  That's when you start to see that their own cynicism, pessimism, and selfish thought process allows them to not tell you everything about a product in an attempt to get you to put your money in their pocket for what ever they are trying to get you to buy.

Part of my cynicism, pessimism and selfishness looks at your poll and wonders why you only asked for others to post their reason for voting negatively in the poll.  Why didn't you include this for the other options in the poll?  My cynicism says you did it for ulterior motives.  That you were doing your own form of marketing.

Its not the first game to suffer from false advertising, probably won't be the last, but it certainly wasn't the worst. Doesn't mean we should just roll over and accept it, and it will probably mean that the next game Sean Murray is involved in will suffer far greater scrutiny. :o
