We played advanced and much more 3rd edition.

We were younger and we played a lot smoking weed and drinking vodka. We never got very stoned or drunk but it helped to make some funny stories. As a dm i gave some verbal clues and the player should write it down... it happend more than one time that this note became unreadble and of course i didnt repeat hehehe.

It was really funny to see my friends around the note trying to read the bizarre characters they wrote.

Last time played D&D it was using 2nd edition rules, which i still think are the best ones, still have the books, and, Undermountain, maybe one day, i'll DM a group there again. :o

If I played again I would mod the heck out of it.  Wouldn't require mages/clerics to memorize spells.  Wouldn't require them to make concentration checks when getting attacked.  I would keep the spell limits though.  Probably would give the warriors the ability to taunt in order to protect the mages/rogues.

This style was what I loved so much about Elder Scrolls.  You could finally play a spellcaster without feeling like you are giving up anything.

You can always home brew rules. When I DM I use a home brew rule that not only does a critical deal double damage it knocks a medium or smaller creatures prone for their next turn.

The most exciting for me was being a part of the D&D Next beta. To have a part of helping to develop the new system of rules for D&D board games. Game on Gamers!

I liked a guy in my creative writing class and wanted to hang out with him, so I asked him what he was doing Saturday and he told me that it was a guy only day and that they were playing D&D. I had no idea what it was and though dissapointed I gave him my phone number anyway. He really seemed uninterested so I let it be.

Come Saturday evening I got a call from him, I guess a couple people dropped out and he invited me to play. Surprised and enthused I went and he shoved a few books in my arms, told me to read them while they waited for the rest. It was all foreign to me, but I got a good grasp and wrote down notes. He gave me a premade character and I took it.

He explained to me that this was one of his alternate characters told me that he was a necromancer. Not only did he summon the undead, he ate dead flesh and was pretty crazy. On top of that he spoke to a skull, which no one else could hear it because it spoke only when he was alone.

I had never roleplayed before and had to count the faces of the dice to make sure I had the right one each time. I thought I was doing well, but being a noob they did sigh heavily at some of my actions. For the rest of the traveling I remained quiet until we came to a narrow bridge with an huge group of Orc on the other side. I don't remember too well, but I think it was our quest to prevent them from raiding a town.

While they were discussing how to destroy the bridge, I grew bored. So I chose action. The Necromancer ran across the bridge and slapped the leader in the face. He attacked an missed each time as the Necromancer ran back and hid behind the warrior. They charged across the bridge and everyone died.

I was told to get out which made me a bit angry but I didn't know the consequence of death at that time. We never spoke again but I got on the internet and started doing research about the game. Found another group of people who didn't mind teaching me more anyway. Fell in love with the story.

Anyway I know this is a huge wall of text, but later I found what I did with that necromancer hilarious and have always been drawn to play whenever I can.

Sounds to me like a loser group. My group would have laughed their asses off.

then again we were about having fun.

In any case, glad you actually enjoyed your experience and stuck with it.

My memories of D&D take me back to the late 1970's and a childhood friend of mine. He was a kid who suffered from cystic fibrosis and spent half his life in the hospital. It was amazing that he had managed to skip a grade in school while he was constantly sick and suffering with things like pneumonia. He loved D&D and we would make our dungeons and play pieces out of Lego, he had a hell of a lot of it, but back in those days our selection of pieces were a lot more limited  then they are today and our imaginations went crazy with it.

Andrew died when he was 13 years old back in 1978

    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

You shouldn't have been treated like that. Sorry you were grouped with a bunch of knuckleheads. I'm glad you had fun and got into the hobby though!

I wish I could pick a single tale to tell.

Been in a couple of games with Gary Gygax as DM.  Although one of them was playtest on a Gamma World Module Legion of Gold he ran at Spring Revel in 1980 IIRC.  Didn't get a playtest credit for that though. :(

One of the best campaigns I was in had a ton of characters.  The DM allowed some short one on one sessions during the long play sessions so people could take breaks and grab food/etc.  Often my rogue along with another rogue and mage did things which resulted in more "adventure" for the whole part.  Specific fun things that happened during that campaign.

    1)  On guard duty in a underground setting I wandered outside the room we were sleeping in to the nearby secret door I had discovered previously when scouting ahead of the party.  The mage knocked it open and the three of us entered.  I noticed a lurker above before it could surprise us and will killed it quickly and quietly.

We came to a door and got surprised by some Hill Giants.  We started to run for the party and the mage and other rogue went down (still alive).  I turned a corner and climbed up and hid.  The giants ran out the secret door and discovered the party but didn't surprise them as the Thark woke up.

I heard a voice in my mind then climbed down to bandage my friends and searched the giants room.  The voice in my head was an Intelligent sword of parrying which I kept. :D also, a few gems as well.

The three of us questioned the party as to why they didn't wake up when we called?  The Thark said he did but the rest of the party didn't  wake up.  The party got into a debate about how to wake up. Some wanted a horn but others said it was too loud.  Shaking awake was ok but might not help with a surprise but if it was a surprise it wouldn't matter either way.  In the end,  we got away with it! haha

    2)  Later, we dropped off at the dwarf's kingdom to drop off some ancient relic they were seeking.   The three of us stole from the kings treasure vault and my share was enough money to buy an improvement to my sword (taking +2 to +3).  It was expensive though as it cost me every coin I stole from them to pay for it!

    3)  The pesky Paladin had us going off to save some woman who was going to be sacrificed.  As we cleared place we found a secret passage leading to where they were starting the ritual.  It was a rough fight and they had some warbears that took down that pesky Paladin (he was on deaths door but lived).  The rogues and mage ran around battle to save the woman and search for treasure which we found (the big haul too!).

The party had a major blow up over this as we had done this before.  But the DM told us every player had been finding treasure they hadn't told the group about including the Paladin.  So we split it and everything we ok.  Except it wasn't.

When I was on guard duty with the rogue, I took some of the warbears blood and wrote on a sheet a message not to mess with me and signed it G with a dagger through the G.  My characters name started with a G.  The party assumed it was a warning from the leader who ran off during the battle.  The thoughtful mage took the sheet for some reason.

    4)  In a big town, the rogues started spreading rumors of the famous badass whose calling card was the G with a dagger.  Eventually, we started hearing rumors ourselves out this G character.  Stuff we didn't even know about him like he was a werebear.

So after a profitable robbery, the rogues got surrounded by five rogues from the local thieves guild.   They invited us to follow them to their leader.  We attacked and killed all five.  Afterwards, I carved the G mark in their chests.

The party left town that day and when we camped at night, the entire thieves guild attacked us. Too much magic for them to handle and it was an easy overkill.  The party figured it was the G who sent them and we talked about it.

The werebear rumor was mentioned and the mage told us it wasn't a rumor but a fact.  The party had assume he wrote the sheets with his own blood (I never understood that assumption!) and the mage had it tested at the mage guild and it was werebear blood.  So a few us knew that the Paladin had been taken out by werebears.  The DM didn't have the "warbears" turn back to human form when they died so...

    5)  We arrived at the capitol where we found out a character in the party was the kings number one son.  We had a downtime session to do fun stuff.  The town was famous for magic and magic-users.  There was a magic shop where you could buy all kinds of things.

The Thieves guild told me everyone who tried to steal from it died.  NBD right.  Some information we got was a protection was placed on items that would be removed when you buy it but would cause a disintegrate living beings when you crossed the doorway with the protection in place.  They also believe there was a portal to somewhere in the mages guild where the items were kept but it wasn't 100%.  So a plan was made.

I went to the store to browse some items.  I purchased a pair of boots of speed and two potions of speed.  I asked about the ring of invisibility but "didn't have enough money on me".  So I arranged to comeback the next night which is when I stole the ring from them.   How?

The other rogue was in the store as I was looking at the ring.  She did the reverse pick pockets into a man's pocket of an item from the store.  The mage was singing as he was approaching the store and on a specific word, the rogue yelled out "thief!" to the man while the made opened the door but didn't cross into it. The staff ran over to the man who protested. I tossed the ring out the door where there was a big flash and ran off with my boots speed.  Grabbed the ring, used a potion of speed and ran off eventually putting the ring on.  The staff chased and knocked down the poor mage who was "hurt" in the process.

They sold the mage items at a discount for that.  Our rogue who did the reverse pick pockets got a ring that was like vampiric regeneration. Although I don't recall if that was at a discount or not.  The man was publicly executed for attempting to steal from the magic store and at the execution the official said that nobody has ever managed to successfully steal from a magic store in town. Boo.

I loved my spear throwing/wielding scout. A DM worked his butt off to make this one fight a huge deal and within three rounds a paladin and I (plus the rest of our group, but mostly me and the paladin) wiped the floor with our characters and the DM was very upset. Like, VERY. He worked so hard and long for that moment and it was over in a few rounds. lol.

    Oh joy.

I was in a session once and very tired, so my attention wasn't up to par. Anyhow our party wandered into a temple and the cultists there spoke in unison "We come from the depths, we protect it." Without a beat I responded to the dungeon master: "Ummm. Out of character here, my character doesn't speak unison."

I still catch hell for it to this day.

Started with  Red  Box. . played AD&D Oriental Adventures after that.

Favourite setting is Darksun played with 2nd edition.

My favourite moment was my first introduction to PvP I guess.  The DM was drinking and being very unforgiving.  We found a treasure chest.  The minataur character tried to take it but everyone got mad so he laid down on it. . the mage levetated it with the mino on top and then dropped it shattering everything and hurting the mino badly.   Somehow in the ensuing battle someone cut off our theif / mage's  right hand. . so we called him lefty . .hard to cast and to thief stuff with one hand. . .ah. . good times.

Going to start up again soon with one person from that very group decades later. . either 2nd or 5th.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
