What is the newest model of Playstation 4?

KyleranKyleran Member LegendaryPosts: 43,975
My son wants me to buy the "new" Playstation for his BD.

Is it the "Pro" version retailing for around $399?

I noticed they sell a $299 version as well.

Thanks in advance.

I'm considering picking up my first console since the PS2 soon.  I will be picking up the Pro.  It's the better version of the console and down the road it might have some real advantages.  Seems like it would be the safer bet to pay a bit more and get the better one, than worry about trading it in later on for a Pro.  Then again, this is only my opinion so please take it with a grain of salt.

Torval already explained it way better than I ever could.

I have the 1tb P's4 pro, I also have the early P's4. You can tell the difference especially when playing mmo's or multiple games. The P's4 pro makes less fan noise than the standard P's4.

It also loads a lot quicker, If you haven't got a PS4 why would anyone buy the less powerful one especially if you intend to use VR.

As far as I know @Kyleran, that is correct!

The 1TB Pro is the best version you can get currently, I think.  Maybe a "better" version that's a package deal with a game publisher or something.

If you have a 4k TV I'd go with the pro, else choose the slim. The Pro is more expensive because it has a better video card, it's larger physically, has more USB ports and optical out for nicer audio. It does consume more power and is rather large for most living rooms.

The slim is the next one down in terms of newest.

@Kyleran btw, if you're going to have access to a PS4, my brother and I could certainly use a third when playing things like Titanfall 2 and other multiplayer titles..  Hint HINT!

If you do pick it up along with your PC gaming hobby, IM me, good sir.

The 299 ps4 is the slim, max resolution of 1080. the 399 is the pro, max resolution of 4k.

Not really much of a difference if you don't have a 4k display.

and the PRO has a WiFi card capable of /ac not just n. the current wifi card in ps4's is horrendous.

I'd say even if you don't have 4K TV, $100 is well spent to push 30fps to 60fps on many titles.

Would make no difference if the display's max output is only 24 fps. Which is the case on the general television. Not always the case, but generally (2 out of the 3 in my home are like this, Sony, Emerson, and an LG... surprisingly the Emerson that does 60 frames.)

Thanks for all the answers guys.

While he doesn't own a 4K TV today, I'm sure he soon will (and I plan on buying myself one in the spring) and the extra memory is a definite draw.

Now to convince the wife of all your sound reasonings.  ;)

Thought i would respond to this just to share what some may consider the uncommon thing to do. couple weeks ago i did the exact opposite. instead of waiting for the Pro(which i have many issues with the way it has been marketed personally but that's a whole nother can of worms) i bought the regular ole PS4.(Uncharted Bundle paid 280)

my reasoning is mostly i just wanted to play the exclusives and at times needed an alternative to being in my PC room at a desk. i know no console will ever be on par with either of the gaming PC's in my house or the speed at which i can continuously upgrade them. So for me when i care about graphically power i go for PC when i just want to play an exclusive only title it is the only way i can justify a console also i'm really not a fan of all the restrictions and locked down nature of consoles these days.

at the end of the day tho a console purchase is all about what the buyers expectations are and intended use. what makes no sense for me may be the total opposite for someone else. just sharing a different perspective :) Good luck with your decision OP and i hope it meet your families expectations!

Ended up buying the PRO model after discussing it further with my son.

I see the logic behind the slim of course, but hey, no regrets, life's too short.
