Not sure if it's my old age or just the game being so uninteresting.
I'm glad I didn't spend a dime on this one.

This game is yet another confirmation of how out of touch RG is. As if Tabula Rasa taught us nothing. Edit: just look at the comments. Come on Portularium; get a hint already.
And therein lies the problem...
SotA is like that gorgeous woman you see at the bar. You buy her a drink, invite her over to your table and after the first five minutes, you realize your mistake.

Lucky you.
I wish I had someone sitting at the computer with me when I pledged...to forcibly slap my hand away from the mouse before I could click 'buy'.

True. Hunting and gathering are very enjoyable due to the excellent scene design. I wish the over-world map was also well designed, but it isn't immersive at all. Still, it's been a lot of fun exploring the game.
But they also look like there'll be heavy pop ups (i.e. trees) everywhere, other players/NPCs/creatures turn invisible at mid distance and the game will run with 20 fps on many machines because of poor optimization.
SotA isn't fun. It's boring, it's broken, it's dated, and unlike Tabula Rasa it isn't improving. It also makes me question the common belief that Electronic Arts was almost solely responsible for the complete and utter destruction of the Ultima series. I now think RG had a much bigger hand in that than most people realize.
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

Garriott had been replaced far earlier than that (in Tabula Rasa). He was just fronting the project the last year or so prior to release, and other folks chosen by NCSoft were in charge. It had too many managers at that point, and the brew was spoiled. Garriott's not a great project manager, but that's why he perpetually tows around Starr Long. Long didn't ride herd on Garriott well enough in TR, and eventually NCSoft got tired of waiting. I surmise that they killed it because of the connection to GR. Perhaps they would've been required to pay him more if they continued, and relationships were pretty testy then.
SotA is an MMO attempt on a shoestring budget. Corners have to be cut. I'm not aware of any similarly funded indie MMOs that have had success at that finance range.
