A FFXI Proposition

For many of us FFXI was the definitive MMO. The game we spent many, many hours on during it's prime. I started way back at PS2 release and quit after they raised the level cap from 75. I tried to go back after Abyssea had been released, but it just wasn't the same. My thought process now is that maybe it wasn't the game's fault (not totally anyway) but could it be the players as well. Just because there's a means to get to the top faster, does that mean we have to take it?

A long time ago I tried an idea I had in which I attempted to recruit a group of players to join a LS that's specific purpose was to play the "old way" and completely avoid Abyssea. We'd still play on the official servers, but just follow our own guidelines for progression and do things the way they used to be, because you need people in order to play that way.

My question is, has the game changed so much so that you couldn't even do that? And if you could, who would be interested?

I think there's a LS like that on asura. You can check the server official forums or ffxiah.com's forums.

As for me returning, its not as much an issue with the game as it is with SE. They know the game needs server merges badly but they keep trying to milk the remaining player for as much as they can get while providing honestly no real new content. The content they add is just repurposed assets that take a week at most to do, which is why there are monthly updates. As soon as they do server merges, I'll probably play a bit more.

I understand your concerns. I looked to see if you could find this LS you mentioned. I found something where they were doing level 75 stuff capped at level 75? Is that the one?

I'm thinking more of an overall experience.. skipping Abyssea in favor of leveling up the old way etc.

I m always in for that. My wife and I joined that LS a long time ago and went through the pains of watching people wreck it.

We would be in I m sure, except we re enjoying the hell out of WoW atm.

Yep! That was the LS I started way back when.. It was great until we got way too many people too quickly and people started to overturn the ideas that were in place to play the old way. I also didn't have as much time as I do now (I have a crazy schedule still) but I'm not tied down to a 9-5 type job like I had then. I've been pining over these forums trying to find a game to play and I've so far tried, Tera, Black Desert Online, Archeage, and SWTOR, and I just recently quit WoW again for 30th time just due to being burned out on the "dungeon spam."

Archeage was the only one that remotely appealed to me because it feels "old school" at least in theory.

Skipping the post ToAU content wouldn't be all that hard to pull off with the game in its current state, unlike WoW you can regulate the difficulty of content by not doing the limit break quests to break 75. I don't think there's a way to get the genie back in the bottle when it comes to grinding out levels though, it's been dumbed down too much. I've been back for a few weeks now and I can get a job from 1 to 50 solo in far less than a full day with no party. The grind is dead, but dynamis, sky, sea, etc. is still mostly intact as far as i can tell. Some stuff is a little different, 3 kings are popped w/ items you get from their bcnm counterparts... but those camps I don't miss anyways lol. Would have to come up w/ at least 18 solid players to go old school... I know 2 (including myself) that would be down.
