Looking for a good exploration MMO.

kabitoshinkabitoshin Member UncommonPosts: 854
As the title says, I'm looking for a good exploration MMO I'm looking for one that's mostly seamless and has lots of delves. I've played ESO, I had a good time, but seems only a few were unique I don't know if this has changed, I haven't played since a few months after launch. I would like to find one that quests send you deep into delves and not just be some useless dungeon that's just there. Probably asking a lot, but seems most mmo's I have played really lack on that part.

I know this is not even close to what you are looking for but Black Desert has a pretty nice map with some hidden places.  I frequently explore the mountain ranges for resource nodes and hidden caves.  The hidden caves only take a few seconds to explore but they each have a chest in them that you can farm every day.  The entrances are usually hidden with bushes or fallen trees.

It also has a lot for the non-fighter like finding wild horses and capturing them, then training them in different skills and then breeding them to get faster ones.  It is suspenseful to me after I find and then catch a wild horse to ride it back to the stable to find out what tier it is (1 thru 3) and you can then breed them up to tier 9 I believe.  The tier 8 horses sell for tons of cash and they sell like hotcakes.

There is also fishing and boats.  I enjoy running around in my little fishing boat I named "Leaky-Dingy" after that bar in D&D.  I explore the islands and look for interesting fishing spots.

It is an open world PvP game but you cant PvP until level 50 and at level 49 you can just NOT do the level 50 quest and you will stay level 49 forever (until you decide later to go back and do the level 50 quest) so if PvP is not your thing, you can stay level 49 and not worry about PvP.

Sounds pretty decent I did play a bit during beta, just didn't really get hooked during the time I played. I may give it a try since it has a 7 day trail.

    Since you had played ESO--

    EverQuest 2
    EverQuest
    World of Warcraft
    Guild Wars 2

Probably EQ live just because there's 24 expansions. Sure most of them are garbage but that doesn't change the fact there are endless area to explore, hundreds in fact.

I should mention I've played WoW for way too long, and that games exploration is one of the worst nowdays. Guild Wars 2 haven't jumped in that since the x-pac launched, other than every delve being a jumping puzzle it was good for exploration. Never have gave everquest 1 & 2 a chance since the glory days for them have been long gone, and never hear much about them.

Not sure how interested you are in this, but i've been playing a little game called Astroneer (on steam) lately, and it's really fun. Tons of exploration, and lots to do. It's not really an MMO, but if you've got a friend, they can jump in the game with you and do some co-op. Really great game for $20.

Vanguard is dead, I guess what I'm looking for ins't in any modern MMO or one that's not severely dated.

I've been considering on getting this for $20. Is it worth the money?

Definitely. Best $20 i've spent in a long time. Most games I'll spend a couple hours on and be done with them for a while. I played Astroneer for damn near 8 hours before I even realized what time it was.

Everquest 1 for sure I think it was the game where I was very afraid to wander about and it really was vast. Unfortunately it is not seamless so if you can accept that I would suggest you play that and start in the old worlds and explore those.

BDO is nice too but the mob density is a bit off putting.

Exploration doesn't exist anymore. All quest are marked. All spots are a google away.

IMO these replies are pretty bad. Most of the games being listed are outdated, and Black Desert's exploration really isn't that great at all. Although I will say the game itself is fantastic. Archeage's exploration is way better than any of the games listed here. Not only can you explore the land, but a giant ocean as well. Sail the open seas mate!

If you're into exploration, you have to try Uncharted Waters Online.  Exploration there is a major game mechanic, and about as important to the game as combat.  Rather than exploration being something that you can do if you really insist on it even though the game tries to discourage it (as is the case with most games mentioned in this thread), adventuring quests and maps (basically a quest to go find something) are the source of a large chunk of the best gear in the game.

I'd suggest LOTRO. Its world is one of the biggest of any MMOs and as it's been developed over so many years, it's filled out naturally with interesting quests and storylines. There are loads of deeds for discovering things that give in game bonuses, titles etc.

Not an MMO but ARK is fun to explore in. Get a friend or two and play on a private server. Build a base, tame dinosaurs and explore ever further out into the more dangerous areas of the island discovering caves and other sites. I haven't played the new DLC map yet, but it looks pretty interesting.

If GW2 didn't have almost every interesting place on the map pre-marked with a big "come look at this!" icon, it would be great for exploration. It can still be fun to explore the maps and find hidden things that aren't marked like the jumping puzzles.

By today's standards most people think when they walk in to the foggy parts of their map and then it suddenly reveals the whole region, they have "explorationed"!

MMOs that are almost entirely quest/story driven are not made for exploration....Instead of having an area to explore or something to discover they have quest items and mobs that are involved in quests so you really arent exploring anything.

A lot of people complained about all the dungeons in ESO being the same so they updated them and since then added more so it's worths going back and because they opened the factions you can now explore the entire world with one character.

GW2 is great for exploration, there is so much going on in that game it's worth it.  Dungeons are pretty standard I think as I rarely do them.

I hope people understand that google is optional.  There are plenty of people who don't run to google for everything.  Not a good argument.
