Will 2017 be the year of solid releases coming through early access and/or kickstarter?

or will it be another disappointing year like previous years?

So far we had Greed Monger, Pathfinder Online, Landmark, Hero's Song and Divergence Online turning into total failures. Both the repopulation and TUG is looking bad, the former changing management and the latter had to do huge layoffs and are now talking about releasing with an MVP.

On the positive side we could have crowfall, shroud of the avatar, albion online, camelot unchained and pantheon launching this year but a few of those should have been released already. Both life is feudal and Gloria victis is also available as paid alpha/beta.

Are you hopeful that this model will bring the goods in 2017 or are you expecting another year of disappointments?

I don't see any of those MMO in development releasing in 2017.
We might see few Alpha or Betas but nothing more.
Maybe the only one that has a chance to make it this year is Crowfall, but I wouldn't be so sure of it either.
So prepare yourself for another disappointing year.

I wish that was true, but the only one that could surprise us in such way is only the Amazon MMO (though it is not really a secret).
I don't see any other developer that has the financial power to keep a MMO under wrap til the last minute.

    Launch ? No way !

But pre-pre-alpha, pre-alpha, alpha, Early Access, beta and possibly even some new never-heard-of-before labels will very likely be available in 2017 for most of the big ticket crowdfunded games.

All of those will require an upfront spend of course.

Play what we got is 2017. Unless you want to pay to play some betas. Im enjoying going back to some old MMOs I have loved. Play the new expansions and move on. I have been playing SWToR for the past 8 months or so and having a blast trying to play all the classes to hear all the stories. May even try WoW again when the latest expansion is on sale for 20 bucks.

I returned to something "new" which is very old school, pretty sure it will occupy me for much of 2017, so no matter if nothing new comes out.

A few of these won't be launching this year. Albion probably will be fully launched. Crowfall maybe by late 2017, but I haven't looked at their projections recently.

I know Pantheon is starting pre-alpha testing this year, followed by alpha and shooting for beta by late 2017 or early 2018. I know they want to thoroughly test the game before launching to avoid a Vanguard situation, so 2017 is out of the question.

I'm thinking 2018 will be the year of the indie MMO.

Unlike many, when i say i like a game,i really do like it,meaning i could play it for a very long time.Point being i don't NEED to play any NEW game just because it is new or i am bored,i have plenty of games, movies sports to do.

So to the devs who think they can toss out any second rate trash or some "unorganized" crowd funded game,i won't be buying it.We will never see a triple A crowd funded game, impossible, those games ahve no guaranteed income,no idea how much they need to work with, therefor they don't know how many employees they need.basically Crowdfunded gaming is a just wing it as they go along ordeal,so yeah very unorganized, second rate game design.

Well, IGN said Bethesda did "bad marketing" because it announced Fallout 4 out of blue instead of "building up the hype in one year marketing campaign - which is the right way of doing it" and people stood by IGN.

I think it shows the current mainstream vision of gaming.
IGN are terminally brain dead.  A Fallout game will sell like hotcakes no matter when it's announced, even if they announce it one day before.

What IGN is really mad about, is the loss of clicks through a year's worth of bullshit "what if" articles that they could have written.  It's literally about lost ad revenue.

    • Our Korean friends will Bless us with a new MMO. BDO did good for many people, I think Bless would do so too.
    • Will definitely see more of Lineage Eternal and Lost Ark, I hope for betas by the end of the year.
    • I believe we'll see something Star Citizen that would regain some of the lost trust and raise a new level of conspiracy.
    • I think Crows will Fall heavily this year.
    • Theybreak games will close down another title.
    • Camelot will be Unchained. I consider @MarkJacobs oldschool. He didn't put up a shallow of a dream of his product on the Early Access shelf--unlike everyone else on the planet--and I bet he won't have it on a beta stage for years. It will be a true beta stage, and this title alone is enough for me to have a great '17. Looking forward to that Slaughterwolf!

Crowfall probably. Not much else from the west as far as I can see.

I am a skeptical person. I have zero expectations from early access / kickstarted games, so I can only be positively surprised.
I think it is probably better to try new games with little or no expectations rather than thinking every single game is the next WoW killer

I would say games entering the mmo genre to compete with whats out there like WoW etc. "WoW Killer" is like a trolly term because everyone knows WoW will always be highly popular its mainstream. What I'm trying to say is you can't kill off another game's audience if they clearly have been loyal. Are people going to try to kill off star trek and star wars franchises by introducing a new sc-fi franchise to try to do so? See how ridiculous that sounds, "compete" is a more accurate term
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

The biggest initial releases will be Bless and Dark and Light, both of which should receive a good initial pull. From there I'm not sure what we will get but I'm okay with not having many as the market cannot support that. My only want remains unique options to play. Unfortunately as @Shaigh pointed out, some of these have either been cancelled or on the ropes.
  • ShaighShaigh Member EpicPosts: 2,150
I haven't really followed any specific kickstarter project real close, but checked out individual projects when they have some interesting footage to share and the responses I see in this thread ends up similar to my own expectations. I think we will get a Crowfall MVP release this year and that's pretty much it.
