Would a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory MMO work?

TheScavengerTheScavenger Member EpicPosts: 3,321
It would be aimed at kids. But, many here on MMORPG.com do have kids, and the "adult" MMOs aren't very good for kids. A lot of kids play GW2/WoW, and are subjugated to rude trolls and learn bad habits. I know many people would rather their kids be raised properly.

Now, why Willy Wonka? Well, its perfect for kids. You got chocolate (everyone likes chocolate even if they are lactose intolerant, they are lying if they say they don't like it), a large factory to learn how to make chocolate (even if some of its "magical"), you got Willy Wonka. You got the whole exploration part of his factory. The oompa loompas that most kids like (though some get scared by them). It be like a Hogwarts style MMO, but instead of Hogwarts, its Willy Wonka's factory. Exploration would be a big part of the game, seeing his huge factory that some not even shown in the movie(s). You can add real time travel (not fast travel) down various chocolate rivers.

And then you'd have to deal with visitors (so this part be really good for kids), some visitors would be really rude, obnoxious or weren't properly taught by the their parents how to function in society. So the kid playing the Willy Wonka MMO will have to learn how to deal with these visitors, but in an appropriate manner. In most MMOs, that involves killing them, but in Willy Wonka the kid would have to learn to stand up to the bully of a visitor (so it be great learning experience on dealing with bullies), but in a non-physical manner.

I think it be a better learning experience than, say, a hogwarts/harry potter MMO that is only about fighting with conflicts and not dealing with a problem in a safe manner. Willy Wonka could be a really good kid MMO, sort of like in the style of Free Realms that SOE made some years ago.

What do you guys think?

I dunno what you are implying. But, if you agree, it IS good to have MMO style games for kids. For one, it helps them get raised right instead of being surrounded by memes and 4chan style chat. And it also gets them into gaming, but still learn things as well.

Like math blaster from many years ago was an equally fun game as it was learning. At least to me as a kid it was.

A math blaster MMO could be really cool for kids to help them learn math and socialize, though this topic is about a game that would really focus on exploration and dealing with bullies as its main sell points. Especially since bullying is a big thing right now that is happening to kids all over.

There hasn't been very many kid MMOs. Free Realms, and that cartoony game from Disney...Toontown or something it was called? Not sure if there has been any others.

What I am implying is, check Daybreak website and see if there is any trace of Free Realms (hence why I said "read between the lines").

Free Realms was by SOE, not Daybreak. Daybreak doesn't list it at all. Free Realms was very successful as far as kid games go, it only failed because they refused to update it and add new content. But when I tried it out with my young cousin (well not so young now), the game was very active. More active than even EQ2 currently is. It died out at the end though, because content was VERY slow to arrive.

Nope. As a multiplayer kids game, sure but not as a MMORPG.

There are plenty of kid friendly settings you can use instead, like Narnia, Dr. Seuss , Bob the builder, The Neverending story, the Powerpuff girls, my little pony or whatever kids these days see but Charlie and the Chocolate factory does not have enough lore for a good MMO.

There certainly advantages with a MMO for kids (even though SOE failed) but you need a far larger and more advanced setting for it.

A regular multiplayer game where kids explore the factory together certainly could be popular though, getting kids into games is always good so we get a new generation of gamers eventually. :)

Daybreak is SoE re-branded, and Free Realms was so successful that they shut it after less than 4 years.............while EQ, a 16 years old game is still going.

You are not really good in reading between the lines if it took me 3 attempts to explain my first post.

Kids at that age don't have pocket money, and there are hundreds of more appealing games on Android for kids to play on their tablet.
A Kids MMO is just not viable, ask Funcom.

No, lol. It was a single book, and just one movie. Even Mary Poppins had more to it than that.
  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332
Well it would work ...if you are being serious, but for the ages of 5-14,i can't see any adult getting into it because the game play if following the movie would be just silly.Since the genres for kids gaming is pretty thin ,i would say it would be a viable project.

Perhaps a Candyland MMO with the chocolate factory as a location, but there isn't enough in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory alone to be an MMO.

It doesn't stop them from buying loads of crap in games like Smurf village. I think it is viable, just not the wonka game. There are plenty of other popular games aimed at kids, the Lego games to mention an example.

Freerealms sucked but I think almost all of us agree that SOE got worse and worse with time, after EQ2 and PS did they actually make anything worth playing (and, no they did not make Vanguard)? It is not enough to prove anything either way. As for FunCom, their number of huge successes are also limited at best.

If for instanced Blizzard made a good kids MMO they would earn loads of  cash, they already did get a rather large part of WoWs income from kids a few years back.

In all seriousness, there are some legit Disney cartoons that would make awesome MMO settings.
    To name a couple examples:

DuckTales springs to mind.  They covered just about everything in that show.
TaleSpin wouldn't be as diverse, but they had sky pirates and delivery runs, etc.

He implied that this has been done before, sadly "MMO for kids" was not enough profitable to keep the project stay afloat.
