Your favorite 2D combat ever?

Setting everything else about the game aside, what 2D game do you think had the best combat ever?
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

    Sure that counts, I think the type of combat is called run and gun, it's similar to a sidescroling brawler (double dragon, golden axe, streets of rage) or a shooter platformer (like super metroid).

    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night or possibly Super Metroid... both solid games.

    One Must Fall 2097.. Fighting with robots to the death while listening to epic 80's synthwave music!! You could also upgrade your robot with enchancements and become more deadly. Did I mention you had robots???

    Salt & Sanctuary I've heard is good, 2D Dark Souls.

    I'm playing Axiom Verge at the moment which I'm enjoying a lot.

    TBH I wouldn't actually say 2D games have amazing combat outside of fighting games.

    I loved the marvel vs capcom games.  They've changed quite a bit from the first one but I'm looking forward to the new one.
