NCSoft will always be held up by its eastern MMO properties. I'm not especially worried about slight decreases in a 4 year old Guild Wars 2, but WildStar is very much a victim of NCSoft's poor image and understanding of the western market. It's unfortunate, but I doubt Wildstar will see much more development. It will probably be put into maintenance mode in the coming year, if not forced to sunset.
It had absolutely nothing to do with NCsofts image. The game launched terribly, offered nothing of substance for the general public, then had a terrible relaunch for F2P.
It is a game that was going down one path for most of its development that decided to do a 180 in the last 6 months of it.
When you have an unpopular *core* feature, there is no saving it.
Wildstars telegraph based combat was simply a turnoff for the masses.

Well, according to that chart OTHER is doing better than GW2... who would have thunk a couple of years ago that Aion would be crushing GW2? Weird how the world works.
It's not weird. Aion has been doing well since it launched. It was very popular here in it's first 2 years before declining but has remained very popular in Korea. GW2 only generated decent revenue when it launched the expansion. It's ongoing B2P model and overly casual come and go gameplay is a little too consumer friendly at the cost of revenue.
Sure it's generally well liked and a lot of people play it over the course of a year, but too many people don't spend anything or very little, and come and go from the game without any real need for consistent commitment. So I think it's popularity both in consistent player population as well as revenue is overstated by many. Sure it's doing well but it's not the top and never will be with the way it's designed.
Just waiting to see Project A and I hope it is Aion 2.
Agree I was going to hop on the "Wildstar's combat sucks" bandwagon and add in a "the entire HUD/UI/pop ups/etc" is terrible too (which I just did) but WTB AION 2 PLEASE. Ever since that little hint that the project had been titled "A2" or whatever I have been dying for some new info. I would love if this were a thing.

only enemies have telegraphed attacks and not all attacks are telegraphed
How can you even compare FFXIV's combat to Wildstar's. Wildstar's combat was crazy red designs here, there everywhere. The combat in FFXIV is nowhere that chaotic plus it is tab target. Healing in Wildstar was horrendous and awful I gave up after trying one dungeon and gave up the game. I played a white mage easily in FFXIV even on the harder dungeons. The combat in Wildstar sucked and was bad and the reason the game failed.
Please no. Arenanet needs to take their sweet time and make the next expansion a strong one. Another small scale expansion like Heart of Thorns would be very, very bad for Guild Wars 2.
There is big update (Power of the Primal Matrix) coming soon to WildStar. And Carbine already confirmed that they are working on many more content updates for this year... it's far away from maintenance mode, not mentioning shutdown.
Paragon Studios was on the verge of releasing a major expansion for CoH with many plans for further content down the road when NCSoft shut them down.
Carbine's optimism shouldn't be viewed as a guarantee of WildStar's future.

They're under a lot of pressure from NCSoft to release the next expansion soon and in general, to release expansions on faster time intervals (I think they said every two years or less maybe?). The only time the game really makes money is with expansions. The revenue numbers on quarters when they don't release an expansion are abysmal. They're what you'd expect for a 10 year old game, not a 5 year old game that's supposedly popular.

Why is a similarity of combat system required for comparison?
When compared they are obviously quite different. WildStar is a fast and fluid system with a high focus on mobility, which is by nature chaotic. FFXIV has a comparatively slower system with a long global cooldown, which is by nature more structured.
Which is better depends entirely on player preference. I found WildStar's combat to be more engaging and that of FFXIV to be rather plodding. As such I prefer WildStar combat. I can easily see why another would prefer that of FFXIV, though.

It won't, Carbine are small but dedicated and they can do as much development now as they could in 2016. Which was quite a bit btw. Don't know how people can say they wont develop they already have a massive patch coming this month.
As for it sunsetting, don't count on it. Wildstar is far to easy to maintain and requires so little money to Ncsoft that it is basically negligible. There is no reason to close it, unlike CoH, Wildstar is still technically making a slight, VERY slight profit.
CoH was making a profit at the end and it too had big content lined up. It got the notification in the middle of coding for the next update. Even the story arc it was working on got cut short.
One of the reasons CoH was sundowned was that NCSoft had too many MMOs to manage so they cut the oldest one which wasn't one of their own. Wildstar is in the same boat. It's not as old, but it's not really theirs.
Have anyone gone back and try out other combat system? Other then tab target there a beta option in the setting to change it to action combat still in beta, but if people do hate the combat can see and try that out.

Changing control schemes doesn't change a game's combat. Only a complete redesign could do that for any game.

Know what's worse than HoT? Underwater expansion!
In all seriousness, I love how Anet tailored HoT as one expac (difficulty-wise), even though story and PVE content are too much reliant on repetition.
When you don't want the truth, you will make up your own truth.
Revenue is down ~27% from pre-expansion. Maybe taking GW2 P2W and driving off all of the vanilla players with their monthly gem purchases for a one time cash grab wasn't such a good idea.
When it comes to "crazy red" it's a matter of not knowing what you are talking about. Much like FFXIV, the red telegraphs are only when an opponent is doing a larger scale attack, and if telegraphs were really the problem you can just lower it to make it just an outline. Even DARING to say the combat is the main reason it failed shows total unawareness at the major issues it had at launch. No new mmorpg that is also a new IP, can recover from two terrible broken launches no matter how good the core gameplay is. Even if Wildstar was to be a niche game where only say, 100k people liked the combat, then it still wouldn't matter, it was the games terrible design decisions at endgame and quest grinding that ruined it. This isn't WoW or FFXIV where you can release garbage and bounce back due to clever marketing and IP recognition.
The combat was fine... i knew hundreds of people playing in the guild i was in and in other guilds who had problems with bigger things than the combat... most of us liked the refreshing combat, it wasnt stale tab target boring as hell, the fact is that the most vocal are those with something to complain about... not very often do you see the happy people commenting about how happy they are and i knew people still playing 6 months after launch who were more than happy with the combat system...
there was many core features i played with in alpha that were changed closer to release that people were much unhappier about, but again it was a combination of things that most people walked away from, i knew a lot of people who quit because attunement was too hard or time consuming or that it wasnt casual friendly and all there really was to do at end game was the really hard attunement.
not many people i know who played left because of the combat and i put in the work, did the attunement, did GA20 on an Esper healer.
I'd love to play Wildstar, but NCSoft banned like a dozen countries including the one I live in... so I'll just throw my money at some other game. ESO maybe
(I posted this in the Pub in a thread there, so this is a copy/paste from that)
Lets be honest. A hardcore themepark MMO (Wildstar) is very niche, more niche than even a hardcore sandbox deathmatch MMO and that is saying A LOT.
This is mostly for themeparks...since EVE is pretty hardcore and popular. But themepark players generally aren't into a hardcore experience (except maybe outside of MMORPG.com)
Honestly, WoW proved if you want to be popular, part of the success (not all of it, Blizzard had a lot of other factors) is the game needs to be casual friendly.
Many themepark MMOs are a success, maybe not as much as WoW, but still a success and that is because they are easy to get into and content can be accessed by everyone...not just 1-2% of players who can experience said content.
Maybe people on MMORPG.com like hardcore themepark MMOs (hence why Wildstar was so hyped up here before release), but most casual gamers aren't going to be into that. Heck, before WoW made endgame raids easier to get into, only 1% of people who played WoW could actually raid. That is a huge problem, got fixed and they saw a huge boost in endgame activites and overall player activity. It did go down over time, but its still a top played MMO.

It's pretty much this. I play the game every day but I haven't spent any money on it in a long while simply because there is no point in it.

Make that Korean Won, which is about 1/1000th of a dollar...
