There is no point for PvP in a mmorpg where its all about numbers/level/gear/class, I've been strickly playing mmorpg since 2000 ONLY PvE and for PvP fix first person shooters work as intended you either shoot on target or not feels fair.
PVE , I work alot, and love to log in my favor MMO and enjoy quest and music, and last thing I want to get is PK by some D, that have no life and no bill to pay, and play MMO all day and get power in game, PK me.
What type of content do you typically seek in an MMO? PvP? PvE? PvX (Both)? Cast your vote and share your thoughts on why in the comments below!
PVP.
I don't like PVE scripted events. 99.9% of the games use very predictable code for their AI ingame, which to me is very boring and lacks any challenge.

Pretty much what jmcdermott said. I love pvp both in "rusher" quake-style or in tactical shooters like CS, I love pvp in board or strategy games (not the rtcraps though), measuring yourself against other players is fun. This however, has nothing to do with MMOs which the question was there you measure yourself to others' gear, or level, or time investment, which is dumb and pointless. Not to mention I always was a story player in RPGs, both at p'n'p and in cRPGs, and RPG is about cooperation and not competition. So yep, in MMOs I just PvE.
This. Very much.
What's more, is I tend to like sandbox worlds, but since developers seem to think that you can't have a sandbox with some kind of open PvP, I pass.
I can't say I speak for everyone, but I'd bet I'm not alone.
I usually play PVE only. All attempts at PVP have been either a reenactment of ground hog day where its the same thing over and over or a jump into a PVP hack fest with cheaters ruining any joy the game has to offer.
Always preferred PvE in MMO's. Mostly because the majority are class based and class balance is a nightmare and nobody gets it right. Then there's the old tab targetting. I play MMO's to relax so slow combat suits me.
For the adrenelin rush I play FPS games. PvP has always been done better with FPS in my book anyway. Or it was when it was a level playing field. Now they done fucked those up too, what with levels and items and P2W and fucking X-ray vision. Seriously, X-ray vision - we used to call that a WALL HACK FFS!
Ditto. Plus, I can't stand the attitude pvp brings out in people.
Both, but PVE should be the main objective with PvP as side entertainment.
WOW is a great example of this. When the game first came out, PVP was secondary. The gear required to PVP you got from PVE. Even when they added PVP gear, PVE gear was just as competitive which made the transition from PVE to PVP enjoyable. I even enjoyed the fact that some gear from PVP was competitive in the PVE scene and thought it was an interesting shortcut to gearing. I believe this was right around the time of the "Warlord" rank where only one person could acquire said PVP gear per server.
When they separated PVP and PVE from each other, the game died for me. The hilarious part about that, was that they separated the gear but didn't separate the skills. So their ploy was simply some half-assed attempt at creating another time sink for players. Then watching them nerf skills that were great for PVE only to balance PVP was even more of a joke.
I could actually argue that WOW went from being PVE based to being PVP based. As it seemed they cared more about PVP content than PVE.
Great pvp'ers are great pve'rs. The opposite is not true lol. That may be why we see the numbers we do here. Some of us graduate to the next lvl while others do not
I like both, but I have to be in the mood for PvP. Which doesn't always happen.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
PvP balancing ruins PvE gameplay. You cannot have anything that resembles burst damage in a pvp game or people complain. So you end up with dull mirrored classes. You see games today with special skills called ultimates or elite skills and there is nothing ultimate or elite about them. In GW2 I always found myself wanting to just replace this skill with a regular skill that was better.
This is the reason I no longer beta test games. In the very beginning of beta you get to see the true potential of some classes, but then have to watch them get nerfed into oblivion. With Rift it actually caused me to cancel my pre-order. I fell in love with the riftblade in the first beta. It was a burst damage type class though, so pvp players complained. Then in beta 2 they not only nerfed the damage but changed the class mechanics completely into something awful.
More recently The Division had there PvP balance patch 1.6 and it just ruined PvE gameplay. They wanted faster killing times in PvP , so they removed armor , nerfed defense talents , put a delay on the best defense skill so it can be avoided , and increased rez times. Well the AI in this game aren't effected by this and are bullet sponges , so you imagine how well taking away all our defense went . . .
I think this is the #1 reason for so much friction between pve and pvp players. When really it's not the pvp players fault. It is the devs and game designers who refuse to separate these 2 styles of gameplay. These megaservers games have now just made the problem worse.
I really hope games like Camelot Unchained and Pantheon that are making their games toward one style are the future. Because I can only think of 2 games that had pve as the prominent gameplay style , without pvp balancing issues. That's EQ1 and LotRO and LotRO still managed to have terrible combat.
Most PVP in any game becomes so toxic with the some of those PVP players we have lately, and i like a good PVP but only when it has purpose in the game, not just some random killing of players for no reason just to show who has the best build.
I mean..let's be honest, mmorpg is one of the most pve heavy websites out there...all you guys talk about is pve...so polls will be as accurate as clinton vs trump

Uhhh.... ummm... no. Just no. Clearly you've never played in a real game.
I think there is a place for each in their own but I also think if done properly and given the right mechanics and balance, between the two it could form something truly unique and awesome. pvp only game get boring when theres no pvp going on but then pve games are usually just a grind and AI is dumb.

Far too many MMOs have a huge powergap that means most fights are decided before they start and with game mechanics like that I prefer PvE.
But most of my really fun MMO moments have been against human opponents, it is just that in most games only 1 fight in 20 is exciting.
EvE is my favourite for PvP and for PvE there's allways WoW, but to this day I haven't seen a MMO where both parts are good.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.
