I gotta say if I was them I wouldn't of showed up either. I have never seen a game, get such a bad review on steam. Even really horrible garbage games like shower with daddy get 1000 times better reviews.
Of course they should have showed up. They could have used the opportunity to thank people  but to also admit that they learned what to do and what not to do. They could have easily turned this around, been humble and gracious and thankful.

But then again there is the cliche of software developer with no social skills. So maybe that's it.
But they were there. They were just eating dinner and did show up later. They obviously were just not expecting the award.

It was just a screw-up and nothing more.

    Now that is embarrassing.

As to the game itself, a recent game arrived and immediately a thought arrived lol.

Knowing what NMS is trying to do and how difficult it is to do it,the game still looks better than the new Zelda that looks awful.NMS is a game with no fanbase following,no Blizzard behind them,no mass marketing, brand new Ip idea and looks better than a legendary IP game.

Every once in a while something comes along that sticks with me forever,NMS can lay claim to the first real attempt at this type of design and Zelda lays claim to the worst lighting i have ever seen in a game ,a popular Ip game at that.

I said it before,we are not ready for a NMS game yet,yes i like the idea and the attempt but it will take a massive budget and a lot of power to do it triple A.Having seen a lot of cool stuff of late,we may be closer than i originally thought, perhaps another 5-7 years we might see a big leap in improvement on the NMS ideas.

I agree with everything you said and if that were the end of the story, all the haters would be wrong but that is NOT the end of the story.  Why did Sean lie about so many things in his interviews and appearances?  If he had JUST BEEN HONEST, he would not be one of the most hated men in video gaming.

Seriously, how many times did he say the game had multiplayer and yet here we are 7 months later and it is STILL not in the game.  I am all for developers trying new ideas and concepts but I seriously hate when I can not tell the difference between a game developer and a politician because they both lie when their lips move.

This is why you don't let marketers talk to media. Honestly, it's just rookie mistakes here. My guess is that they couldn't complete the desired feature set in time, got pressure to get it out the door, and had to axe anything that wasn't already bolted down.

I really don't think it's a matter of honesty. I remember seeing a reddit list or something that had a timeline and it seems like all these supposed lies were from older interviews. Also, I believe they mentioned they plan on implementing some of those missing features, indicating that this stuff was probably cut. Don't know how that's coming along. My son owns the game so I'll probably play it when they get some more updates out.

No. The problem are the lack of features that were confirmed to be in the game by the developers themselves.

Stop consuming from liars.  Sadly, all companies everywhere mis-represent themselves more than a few times. Even small businesses have to eventually compromise in order to eat.

Honestly, it's really up to the end user to disseminate the information provided. Doesn't excuse the behavior, but people need to be far more savvy otherwise they will get burned, a lot.

(people who purchased NMS) have no right to complain when nobody put a gun to their heads and forced them to buy this turd.
If that is your position, I sure hope you have never complained about anything since I don't believe anyone ever put a gun to your head.

I'm not at 140 hours (I think - PlayStation does not keep track of time played)), but indeed it's kinda relaxing and a lot of fun to explore. Unfinished, yeah - there could(should?) have been a lot more things to do in the game...

If you play games to enjoy the features and designs they have rather than focus on those you think they lack you end up a whole lot happier.

Yeah I mean if a cereal has peanut dust in it, says it has no peanuts, and your kid eats it and he has a peanut allergy, it's your own damn fault for buying the cereal.  Fucking consumers and gamers, ruining everything all the time.  Poor devs and corps, they can't catch a break.

Nice straw man. If I ever pre-order or buy a game day one blindly and it happens to suck, damned right, I totally agree I have no right to complain. In today's always connected social media culture there is absolutely no excuse for not doing your homework before making an informed purchase. You thinking that stance negates me from being able to complain about ANYTHING gaming related is absolute bullshit.

Again many people keep complaining about the lack of quality in the gaming industry today but at the same time there is still a large contingent, some of them made up of that very angry vocal group, that continue to unwisely throw their money at any old shit that comes down the pipe. And have been doing so for so long some companies have actually started banking on that very behavior. As with the NMS kerfuffle, consumers continually putting all the blame solely on the shoulders of the company is highly disingenuous, as there is no reason they could not have been patient and avoided buying a game they ended up hating. As long as impulse control issue consumers continue to play the victim and continue to throw their money away blindly, nothing is going to fucking change.

Again no, the problem was a tidal wave of bored and desperate lemmings falling all over themselves to buy this game before finding out what it was like to live with. I don't give a fuck what some dude may have said in a few interviews, there is no way people saw different game footage than I did and to me NMS looked boring and ugly as all fuck. I remember on these very forums comparing the absurd hype train that was NMS to the game Spore, and funnily enough both games turned out to be massively disappointing. It boggles my mind how over-hyped some people got over this game. In less than twenty-four hours of release people found out just how underwhelming the game was verses their own fantasies. Just one day of restraint could have saved a ton of consumers from so many bad feelings, not to mention money loss. Maybe if people didn't consume like sheep they wouldn't be marketed to like sheep.

As you said one shit behavior doesn't validate another, so in that respect the people who feel they got burned because they believed this game was much bigger and better than what obvious stone cold reality showed them it was, have no right to complain when nobody put a gun to their heads and forced them to buy this turd.
@MisterZebub you've been at this for a while, so it's hard to believe you can't find the time to watch a 4 minute video that is mostly interviews with the lead developer.  It's actually rather generous in tone compared to other videos I've seen.  How, in light of this, do you hold to your claim that "the problem was a tidal wave of bored and desperate lemmings falling all over themselves to buy this game before finding out what it was like"?

I'm not hating on this game; it's exactly the kind of thing I'm interested in, and I've even considered purchasing it given everything that's transpired.  You, OTOH, seem almost eager to be deceived.  Why?  What's the deeper issue?

"Companies lie to their customers on a daily bases, its called advertising."

One of the very first things we talked about in my master's level Marketing class was how to correctly set customers' expectations; i.e. not lying to your customers.

Maybe it looks like I'm being hard on this game, but that isn't the case.  It's just that you've been playing this tune pretty hard the past year: it seems as though you are very anti-consumer.

To be clear: I'm not suggesting getting bent out of shape over a $60 video game purchase; however, I'm certainly not for suggesting it's somehow the consumers' fault for believing a narrative the lead dev of a product created over the course of months and months.  It's like you want to give corporations a pass to say anything about their product, thereby absolving them of all responsibility; caveat emptor.  I'm definitely against this.

Further, it's not like I think Sean Murray deliberately set out to deceive his customers in an evil way; I believe he really did want to see the features he talked about in interviews in his game.  The problem is that his vision didn't match up with reality, and he had plenty of time to correct his assertions (not in the day prior to launch, while still leaving room for his previous assertions' veracity).

This is why PR is so important for projects above certain size.  Sean needed to talk to his developers before talking to the press and take a conservative approach, not assert that certain things would be in the game before checking with his engineering team to see if they were locked in features.

The funny thing about this whole NMS controversy was that I watched a lot of the videos for a full year before release and not only did I not expect it to be multiplayer, I didn't care that it wasn't.

I ended up not buying it anyway just because I'm really not a huge fan of minecraft and this just seemed to me like minecraft in space with wacky psychedelic graphics.

But the amount of hate based on the lack of multiplayer I found puzzling. It seemed that a lot of people wanted it to be multiplayer despite the fact that the enormous size of the universe would make running into another player in game an extremely rare occurrence.

I don't remember Sean ever mentioning multiplayer without also emphasizing that rarity. I guess people just ignored that second part and got pissed because the chance was 0 instead of 1 in 10 trillion.
