The only reason i find comparing a mmo with another one is if you had to choose between one of them but outside of that, what's the point?
If you play it and enjoy it enough to continue playing then the mmo is good, if you don't enjoy it then it's bad. It makes no sense going "I enjoy this feature but the "other mmo" does it better so this feature is shit."
Because without comparison you won't be having a frame of reference. Without frame of reference anything can be anything.
Your second paragraph basically means there is no point in criticism.
Your question here is do you compare everything to one MMO and judge them based on how they stack up to it. Then you're acting as though that's necessary to judge one from the other, it's not... My favorite MMO was SWG. Just about everything about that game is different than MMOs today. What is there to compare? Look what it leads to... You won't play anything else because of such comparisons. I'd probably be the same way if I stacked up everything in such a way.

Just a little respectful tip to all the lads whom don't use a reference
When you say you don't a judge a game it means you would never know if what you are playing is good or bad, you like it or you don't--which is impossible. You can replace the word judge with any other fancier word, but it's the same.
And when you say you don't use a game as a reference but a series of features instead, it is again the same thing. Because you haven't come with those ideas yourself, you are taking them from another game(s). And that first game you had played and had that feature which you like, is the reference.
Part of how we deal with everything new is through our past experiences. It is impossible to cast aside your experience unless you have reached nirvana and already on your way to a higher astral plane.
It's quite simple, there's no need to compare one game to another, as playing a game you're either having fun or not, you like the combat or don't, you like the story lines or don't, you like the questing/grind style or don't, there's no need to bring other games into those thoughts, as that just gets in the way of a game's individual merits. On top of that how do you compare say SWG to modern games? There's no real comparison to be made, as they're totally different approaches.
Even outside of MMOs this type of comparing is pointless, I mean why would I worry about stacking Skyrim up to Divinity OS, or Total War to Dawn of War? Each game has it's own lore and gameplay systems, I don't need to play Skyrim to know if Divinity is good...
People really fall into this when it comes to sequels, always expecting the next installment to replicate their first experience with a given property. That's just setting oneself up for disappointment, it's akin to chasing the dragon.
So , we compare , Movies, Books ,Cars, Food, Cities,Girls/Boys,Phones,Tv SHows, TVs, Music ,Atheletes , Sports,Teams,Carpet, Bricks , Trees, Weather,Cleaning Products,Toilet Paper,Cats,Dogs,Pets,, and on and on and on , everything in life gets compared ...
But not games .....got it
Gotta love people who think everyone approaches things the same.. Who said I compare those things to each other? Just because you must compare everything to your favorites doesn't mean everyone does. I really don't compare things in such a way, I really don't care if people think that's being disingenuous or not. I don't see the point in it, especially the manner people do it with games or music. Maybe this is why some of you folks are so unhappy?

What you choose after comparing doesn't necessarily mean quitting. I like the story-telling of SWTOR more than any other MMO. Doesn't mean I can't play anything else ever again.
I'm saying when you are facing anything in your life you are making a comparison. How would you know if something is large? Big? How would you know a game has a big open world? How would you know if it has nice graphics? Complex crafting?
You say if I like it I don't care. Alright, that's fine. But the question is about digesting what you like and why you like it, which would become a frame of reference.

We can't be sure, but perhaps if you and others had chosen not to play whatever developers threw out on the market it would have given them some inventive to make another game more like SWG.
But the more willing gamers are to buy and play whatever is available, including many titles which are clearly inferior, incomplete and frequently with onerous monetization models the less likely it is anyone will ever deliver such a game again. (at a reasonable price)

I compare things is if they remind me of each other, like say a guitar riff is the same in one song and another, or like say the similarities between Warhammer and Warcraft. What I am saying I don't do is use a game as a litmus test for all others, same goes with a band, or a wife... That's the question being asked here.

Wow in basic features and that is the minimum of what i expect in terms of in; 1. type of diffferent activities in the game such quest mechanics, 2. classes, 3.races, 4.day/night cycle, 5. crafting, 6. mini games, 7. combat and having a lot of abiltiies to choose from, 8. player housing 9. dungeons, 10. pvp 11. Expansion content - they add a lot of content that sets a good standard 12. Achievement list
This is what I expect every mmo to also release with as well, if they can not, then they put too much effort in the grinding quests which then I would have to compare that exp to WoW and probably prefer WoW over another grind that feels less rewarding.
And I also havent played WoW in a while, i tried swtor recently and i only played one hero, I enjoyed the game for a little while then i got tired of it. whcih is why expansion content is important and of course having dungeons, group content and rewarding pvp. It would help if i felt that was the case for swtor and ofc the new command system did affect my chance to play another class as well since i play for pvp mostly and that grind is too much and without the grind it feels like broken and not as fun pvp as well. Their style does not work for me, may be it works for others, but if the core features are not enjoyable or not enough of it, then no matter how they try to dress the grind I will not enjoy the game. And it seems for 5.2 swtor they will add a lit group content but make the grind again for the game. so another grind iwthout a proper expansion.

ok so lets discuss SWG housing to todays , I actually lik SWG version much better as not instanced and ability to place nealry anywhere, the deco/trophy system was also much better than todays offerings ..
I would also like to compare SWG crafting systems to todays games , SWG imo was much more superior in every way , from harvesting , to upgrading and processing..
I would like to compare SWGs class system , the Orignal pre NGE was a lotta fun and much better than the generic shit we get from many MMOs today ...
We could continue to compare SWG to todays offerings all day , there are endless possibilities
I use to judge every mmo using SWG as a reference. I used it when I tried WoW vanilla/BC and didn't like WoW at all cause it was different from the SWG blueprint. I used it when I played swtor as soon as it came out but it ended up ruining my experience there too. I used it when I played STO etc....
Anyways the point is your better off putting your expectations aside otherwise that may dictate whether you have a good experience, okay experience or bad experience. Yea I get it you want this "new" mmo to be your old favorite mmo of all time cause it seems impossible that anything will be like it you just try over and over again and force a comparison of your favorite mmo to a new mmo. But trust me its not going to do any good its like a csgo player going to play battlefield and judge it based on csgo and realize it doesn't have the skill based arena no ADS game but rather a giant map filled with people to shoot at via ADS if you want to. That csgo player sounds disappointed and less likely to enjoy battlefield.
Like you, for years after DAOC I kept trying new MMOS and with one exception (EVE) none ever measured up.
I realized they were not likely to change as long as I kept buying them, especially as the influence of the sub model waned giving me little voice as a consumer after the sale. (esp not being a whale)
So I stopped, and for about 4 years now I only play the few titles (all older) that meet my expectations.
It sort of worked too, while not all my doing, so many others have become disaffected the MMORPG market became so unattractive the major Dev houses fled from it.
Now we're in a bit of an early Renaissance waiting for some smaller firms to deliver something more akin to what I am looking for.
The rest of you became "Settlers" and IMO have settled for less in many cases.
But hey, "its your money, use it the way you want."

I use good old fashioned WoW. Is it<> sandbox... Is it <> graphics.... Is it <> leveling..........etc I pick it because it has a lot of mechanics and is an overall middle of the road game for me. I find it better to compare against something like that then the 'best or favorite' that I ever played. Then few things match up and I'm always disappointing. Best to pick a benchmark that is achievable.

Not as a whole package. But when a game says I have a really awesome crafting SWG is where I go. If it has done it better than that I say hey, finally an improvement, if worse well it can still be alright but nothing special nor brilliant. That's why when Repop came along so many people hoped it would fill their SWG void.

Everyone compares the things, that is how the human thinks. If you do not compare with your previous experience you are alien or toddler
I guess I'm an alien... Unless there are 40 year old toddlers. Well thinking about our new President maybe there are.

I never crafted in SWG, so that really doesn't concern me with new games. As I don't craft in them either. I played SWG mostly for PVP and guild related reasons. Nothing has an experience like that.

I really don't compare things in such a way, I really don't care if people think that's being disingenuous or not. I don't see the point in it, especially the manner people do it with games or music. Maybe this is why some of you folks are so unhappy?
Everyone compares the things, that is how the human thinks. If you do not compare with your previous experience you are alien or toddler
I guess I'm an alien... Unless there are 40 year old toddlers. Well thinking about our new President maybe there are.
Now mate you are derailing a derailed discussion with your last sentence, a whole new rage is about to start. :awesome:

You never compared any of those things i listed , if you say no .. you are a liar .. sorry ..
I think it was Churchill who said if you remove horses from the race, any jackass can beat the finish line first--or something like that!
But the more willing gamers are to buy and play whatever is available, including many titles which are clearly inferior, incomplete and frequently with onerous monetization models the less likely it is anyone will ever deliver such a game again. (at a reasonable price)
No, we're not the ones doing it wrong.
We care about which toilet paper we wipe with, and are the better for it.
Besides, happiness is so overrated, give me rage and anger every time.

1. type of diffferent activities in the game such quest mechanics,
2. classes,
3.races,
4.day/night cycle,
5. crafting,
6. mini games,
7. combat and having a lot of abiltiies to choose from,
8. player housing
9. dungeons,
10. pvp
11. Expansion content - they add a lot of content that sets a good standard

Sadly nothing has come as close to SWG

I would also like to compare SWG crafting systems to todays games , SWG imo was much more superior in every way , from harvesting , to upgrading and processing..
I would like to compare SWGs class system , the Orignal pre NGE was a lotta fun and much better than the generic shit we get from many MMOs today ...
We could continue to compare SWG to todays offerings all day , there are endless possibilities
