Oooh! I saw my first ...

Yesterday, after the 10th anniversary festivities, I took my 40th Minstrel back to the Misty Mountains to restart some quests and deeds.  I was roaming around, looking for a quest location, when I saw an Ultra Rare named giant walking around ahead of me.  It had over 1,000,000 HPs, first mob I'd ever seen with that many HPs!   I moved up cautiously to try to get a good screen shot, and it saw me through a tree.  It hit me so hard I had flashbacks to other games, other 'Loading, Please wait' screens.  I've got a variety of characters in the 60s, one closing on 70, and I'd never seen such a powerful single creature.  Kind of amazing that a 10-year old game still has surprises waiting to pound me into the scenery.

Fun stuff!

I am pretty sure you saw one of the level 100 mobs that are there for barter items for a level 100 first age.  They are usually up.  Sorry.

I remember when the Misty Mountains were a hot spot for farming a few nameds that dropped very popular rare crafting bits. That system has been changed since.

There is a giant and a mammoth in that area. There is a third near by but I can't remember what it is. There is also a few in far east Angmar south of Gath Forthnir and the dead swamps. There's a rare wyvern a few others. The wyvern is tough on level because it's fireballs hit so hard, there is a ton of respawn in the area and it can get hectic.

Glad to hear you stumbled on something fun.

I always liked the system they had (not sure how it has changed over time) of getting your high-end, level 50ish abilities (for my Loremaster it was Sword + Staff, the Ent, etc.) from tough grinds in out of the way places and dungeons. It made getting them feel truly epic... ah, the memories :)

Thats pretty cool whatever it happens to be.  apparently there's a roving threat there named sutmoth that has almost 3 million hp's (2,700,000 ish)  that one is an ice giant and it is aggressive.  I've always liked games that have high level creatures mixed in with the lower level ones.  really keep you on your toes.  I remember in DAoC having to be careful with pulls because the level range of a pack of mobs could range from blue (below your current level) to purple (well above your current level).

is this the one you saw?
  • MendelMendel Member LegendaryPosts: 5,609
That's the one, @redneckgamer.  Except it was on the other side of a tree, and I couldn't see it.  Then it splatted me before I could frame any decent screen shot.

Yep, what koboldfodder and redneckgamer said, those are the Roving Threats, a.k.a. world bosses. And they indeed are huge.
I've made a comparison shot after the adjusting revamp happened, and since it's still available after two years, I just put this here (shameless plug   man, the search function of the site is a pain in the butt)  http://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/comment/6587038#Comment_6587038
The regular mammoth is only as tall as their knee...  and yep, since the afforementioned revamp they only have ("only"... ) 1million morale and not above 3.

And the first biggie is in ND, so you can bump into one if you're unlucky enough as early as level 20ish. A thrilling experience I'm sure

What server most you guys play if you don't mind me asking?

Since the anniversary festival is over and the scavenger hunt is more like an endgame grind than a festive event, I've sent my mains to take a well-deserved rest after all the fireworks and envelope chasing.
So currently when I play LotRO, I'm usually on Brandy with that MMO BookClub crowd. I must say, they're a fun bunch   If you don't mind low level gameplay or starting from scratch, maybe give it a try...
