I'm going to have to disagree with you. I would say that if a person doesn't want to read the text then a better system would just be to have npc's who will give you x amount of silver per "whatever turned in" and just allow players to go kill x of y or collect x of y and turn it in as they want.
No point in writing quest text that's not read.
Now I'm for actually having quest text that needs to be read and the player needs to figure things out or else he/she doesn't complete the quest. But that's just me.

I'm not sure that this would be the best course of action on future MMORPGs. What we loved about our old MMORPGs was because it was different, fresh, new and unique compared to the other games we played at that time. As we speak, multiple developers are creating old school MMORPGs with new features... and it just doesn't appeal like it used to. Maybe it's just me, but what I seek being able to truly be a part of something without the same pre-made story lined out for every player who walks into the game.
In modern times, quests should be voiced for immersion. For arrows, you would have to look into mods. Some game addons do add arrows. Wow has Zygor, and there are others I can't recall at the moment.

I miss the days of actually using my grey matter to figure out where the quests were and what was being asked of me.. Everything is just handed to you on a silver platter now..
Current devs might as well just code an NPC that looks vacantly at you.. blinks twice.. a quest appears in your journal.. teleports you to the location.. creatures explode as you mouse over them.. items jump into your pack.. teleports you back to the NPC.. You hear a ding and are awarded some coin.. See? No reading or brain activity required..
Also, since they saved so much money in not writing quests, the devs can hire people in every city to arrive at your door as you complete said quest and kick the player squarely in the groin for this having ever come to this point..
I'm ranting aren't I?? My apologies.. I'll see myself out..
Edit: Ok.. Came back for a minor addendum.. I'm not against quest evolution, just against quest over-simplification.. I think fully-voiced quests do add to immersion and should definitely be examined more closely by devs.. But that's hardly the end of it.. Questing has got to be way more than a gear-rewarding, xp-granting timesink.. The scope and scale need to be seriously amped up..

When WoW started, quest text where full of indications of where the quest objective was, but nothing was marked on the map. You had to use your brain. And then, some asshats started to create map marking addons... and Blizzard ended adding such a system to the game. Problem is, you can't play without it anymore, since quest text do not have those hints anymore.
IIRC, wow eventually added the quest locations to the in game map.
