I'd rather it not get locked until we actually get the resolution from PCGamer...

Or do you plan on opening a new one tomorrow or the next day when the author finally responds?

It's apparent that PC Gamer has not responded to Steven Sharif and the Kickstarter campaign is nearing its end.

If the moderators wish to keep this thread open it will be up to them but I am requesting its closure.

In the unlikely event that PC Gamer and/or Kickstarter respond I will not open a new thread and leave that up to someone else, should they desire to.

I believe it's already derailed and has run its course. It serves no purpose any longer.

Or you know you opened Pandora's Box as far as direction goes from here. Do you realize how many CEO's are guilty of false advertising the health benefits of their products, and how many products used every day that have the same type of reviews by the FDA for worse instances of misleading the public? There are much worse cases to worry about in that regard. Either way, the money folks don't give a damn about false information put forth to sell a product, they're just trying to get paid. So they can do things like make games.... or buy yachts.

If they closed threads which got derailed there would hardly be any left open more than a day or so.

I'd say this thread should remain open until the original issue has been resolved or dies from a lack of interest.

It's up to the moderators now. I'm not really sure why anyone wants it open considering 99% of the thread was pro-Intrepid.

Ashes of Creation will continue crowdfunding on their website for the month of June:

    http://massivelyop.com/2017/06/02/ashes-of-creations-kickstarter-has-successfully-funded-at-3-2m/

" Update: Intrepid has since amended this statement to read: “Because of the high amount of members that requested alternate payment methods that Kickstarter did not offer, I [Steven Sharif] have decided that during the month of June I will extend our crowdsourcing through our website for those of you who were unable to purchase packages through Kickstarter. All backers from Kickstarter will benefit from this additional month of funding with some pretty awesome backer goals and rewards, which we will be releasing today. We will have the ability for Kickstarter pledges to be upgraded as well.” "

If this thread was closed, then we'd need another thread when someone with a lot of referrals confirms that they are seeing some of the Kickstarter purchases on their AoC referral page.

Maybe @Slapshot1188 will eventually be nice to us and tell how it develops.

You know, as long as people show a willingness to continue contributing, there's no real reason for the crowdfunding to stop at the end of June.

Wonder if they'll start selling spaceships?  :)

This is good for people who were skeptical and didn't want to risk backing the kickstarter. As the game progresses people might change their opinion.

Why?  Crowdfunding has its roots in crowdsourcing?

I'm in favor of this, but I think that they should increase the cost incrementally as the risk is removed. That way the KS people don't feel slighted.

I can't believe people support Star Citizen with such blatant pay to win. I doubt/hope this wont happen to AoC considering all his responses to pay to win questions so far.

    Article updated: http://www.pcgamer.com/ashes-of-creation-kickstarter/
Update, 2 June: After this report was published last week, we received conflicting accounts regarding Ashes of Creation’s referral program and whether or not it included donations received through Kickstarter. As the original story states, a Kickstarter spokesperson told us that this was against their rules and that Kickstarter had informed Intrepid Studios, who had complied by removing Kickstarter pledges from the referral program. Intrepid Studios’ Steven Sharif then released this statement via MMORPG.com’s forums, asserting that our reporting was false. As Sharif’s statement directly conflicted with what Kickstarter initially told me, I followed up with Kickstarter. This was the response, which confirms our initial reporting as accurate, but also acknowledges that Intrepid Studios did not remove Kickstarter pledges from the referral program: “The information I gave you is accurate, except, as I recently learned, the part where I said that this creator had excluded Kickstarter pledges from their referral program,” Kickstarter’s director of communications, David Gallagher, told me in an email. “[Intrepid Studios] told us that Kickstarter pledges would be removed from the program, making it entirely separate from the Kickstarter project, which we saw as an acceptable solution. It appears that this did not happen. [Intrepid Studios] said this week that based on [their] communication with us, [they] believed it was fine to continue to include pledges. That was not correct.” Despite the Ashes of Creation Kickstarter being in breach of Kickstarter’s policies, Gallagher informed me that they will not be taking any action against the campaign. “Given the potential for misinterpretation, the creator's removal of the reference to pledge referrals on [their] own site, and the fact that the Kickstarter project page did not mention the referral program, our Integrity Team has decided not to take any action against this project. We'll be revisiting the way we communicate our rules around referral programs to make sure our policies are clear to creators going forward.”
So there was miscommunication and kickstarter pledges are not removed from the referral program.

    Wow!!!

So AoC was in fact in violation of the rules through the whole campaign... and the author did NOT lie.
    Interesting...
Honestly though I think the blame falls on Kickstarter here.  If we knew what the referral process was... the guys making a few hundred grand in fees(Kickstarter) should have known too.

Where does the author go to get his good name back now?  Will Steven and those fans who piled on now retract THEIR statements about him?

Well that's one way to spin it,  the point of contention though was whether they were removing the eligibility of kickstarter pledges for reimbursement, it seems that is not the case.

Secondly nope, not retracting what I said about him, he still uses Reddit as a source for "journalism". WHich screams tabloid nonsense to me.

    Official Statement:

Kickstarter has stated that one time financial rewards are acceptable for package pledges on Kickstarter. This was also a part in the PCGamer article,

I reached out to Kickstarter to see what their policy is on the matter. "Last year we began allowing financial incentives for referrals," they responded. "But we do not allow revenue or profit sharing, which this program essentially offers through its payouts over time."

As such, Kickstarter asked us to change the language on our referral program.

    The PCGamer was incorrect however in stating;

In response to PC Gamer's inquiry, Kickstarter told me they've informed Intrepid Studios, which has removed Kickstarter pledges from its referral program.

This is an outright lie, and we have sent a request for a retraction from PCGamer. MassivelyOP has now today issued an article based on the PCGamer reporting.

    Pledges from Kickstarter

    Let me be clear on another point;

    -snip-

What is not cool, is the character assassination, lying, trolling or outright rudeness to our community or our studios.  We are more than that as a community.  If you have legitimate concerns or comments, by all means voice them.  But try to remember, there are real human beings behind these computer screens.
Given the confirmation from Kickstarter will you now publicly apologize for saying he was lying and the other aspersions you cast at him on this site, Discord, and elsewhere?

And about that last paragraph... the author is a human being too. Maybe keep that in mind before any future character assassinations are considered.

This gives Intrepid an easy way to hold on to their entire share of the Kickstarter proceeds:

"Sorry guys, it's against KS policy..."

It looks from the quoted communication that this is actually what KS would prefer / is expecting to see happen.

Either way, this will set a precedent going forward.  It brings into sharp focus a dichotomy KS would no doubt rather keep away from the spotlight: KS is not a "profit sharing" platform, yet when you quadruple a project's goal some of that money could no doubt be kicked right back to the backers and the project would be fine.

What does this say about all the other projects that have blown past their initial goal?
