New Build - Cheap Build For The Kids

This weekend I received a bunch of parts that I ordered for a completely, ground-up, new build for my three kids.  The laptop that they were using has an aging (dying really) GTX 560M in it and it just wasn't up to the task of playing modern games for the 12 hours a day that they were splitting their gaming time over.

Here's the new build:
Case:  Corsair Carbide 200 Series Mid Tower ($55 USD)
Motherboard:  ASRock H270M Pro 4 LGA 1151 (($85 USD)
Processor:  Intel Pentium G4600 Kaby Lake Dual-Core Hyperthreaded 3.6GHz ($87 USD)
RAM:  Crucial 8GB (2x4) DDR4 SDRAM 2133 ($45 USD)
Hard Drive:  Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB cache ($49 USD)
Processor Cooler:  Cooler Master Hyper 212X ($39 UD)
Power Supply:  EVGA 650W 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular ($86 USD)
Video Card:  Used Gigabyte GTX 670 ($60-100 eBay USD)

I only spent $450 + Tax and re-used a GTX 670 I had sitting in a closet.

This thing is actually a really great computer for the price.  My kids can now play Overwatch on a 1080p monitor on high settings with no graphical lag.  I successfully ran 6 mining characters at the same in EVE Online at high settings, but with asteroid environment turned off.  It didn't even blink an eye at 6 EVE clients running at the same time.

The CPU is surprisingly good for such a low cost.  Having a hyperthreaded dual core processor for under $90 is a total steal.  I'm very happy with the way it performs so far from watching movies, to recording games to playing games.  It keeps up with the GTX 670 with no problems and my kids also run Discord, Skype, OBS and several other programs in the background while simultaneously playing games.

Anyhow, if you're looking for a great budget build for around $500 including a used video card, then I highly recommend this setup.

Not bad for the price. I don't think I would have done it without an SSD personally (probably pulled the money from that Gold-rated PSU and a cheaper version of the CM212), but I can understand the budget limitation and the build you put together is nice.

The Pentiums aren't bad at all if all you are going to do is moderate gaming.

$450 + a used VGA card I had lying around is expensive?  I must be in the right line of work.

Not bad.  The video card is fairly dated by now, but a more modern equivalent would still set you back about $100--which is $100 more than grabbing something out of your closet cost.
