Is there any Open World MMO in the making that has not yet been released?

    EverQuest "Next"
    - Being a longtime fan of the EQ series, I couldn't wait. I even purchased the "big" package for that horrid EverQuest Landmark... After years of waiting... CANCELED.

Lineage Eternal - Couldn't wait for this game. A top-down hack-n-slash that's a full-blown MMO?! Sweet! After years of waiting... DEVELOPMENT TEAM HAS RECENTLY / COMPLETELY BEEN REPLACED...

Bless Online - Where are the NA Open World MMOs? I have to rely on Korea to produce them... I couldn't wait for Bless Online... After years of waiting... CANCELED.

Lost Ark - After a long time of waiting... Any news? SIGH.

In an effort to get this conversation back on tract I will say that yes there are some open world MMOs in the works. However, the game play experience one gains from playing many of the multiplayer games out there is so close to an MMO experience its really worth giving them a try and there is a LOT of them and a lot of them are very good.

Additionally, to those who are stuck in the old traditional MMO ecosystem I can tell you that there are a lot of people playing these games and a lot of people enjoying them. so...

    IMPORTANT:
If you are happy with the older more 'traditional' style MMOs and still having the time of your life then my advice is not worth much. HOWEVER, if you are not pleased with your current gaming selection when it comes to playing with others I do have games I can advise to you that very likely could dramatically improve your gaming experience as it did with me if your interested in making that improvement

Appreciate your offer, but you know what "they" say....

Free advice is usually worth what you paid for it.

    Always listen to "they" ;)
what I was told when I was young is two things

    1. never offer help to people who dont ask no matter how unhappy they are
    2. some people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being satisfied.

I know speaking for me, if I was unhappy with my gaming life I would be open to suggestions regardless of how free they were but I understand some people do not want change their state

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Kind of outdated don't you think?
    nope not really.

you think suddenly there was a magically 100% jump in sales over the past 12 months?

Look here is the bottom line, people like yourself are crying about how bad games are, I am illustrating a solution, people like you are going to great lengths to avoid taking an honest look to see if it can solve your sorrow.

That is basically what is going on here, it also validates what i feel is happening in regards to the question from yesterday 'no..no I do NOT think most gamers here have tried these titles and I think they will go to great lengths to justify not doing so and instead remain in a world of sorrow that they go to great lengths to remain in'

I do have an itch though to compile a sales (and player base use list) of my top 10 favorite current games...maybe i should?
According to where the information from your Wikipedia link came from

    https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-3-ships-almost-10-million-copies-report/1100-6435592/

The Witcher #3 made up for 50% of the total Witcher Franchise sales.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/the-witcher-series-has-now-sold-more-than-25-million-copies/

Since the numbers from the PCGamer article were taken from the *2016* financial results.

    https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/media/news/cd-projekt-posts-strong-results-2016/

We could estimate that sales from December 31 2016 and earlier can be between 12.5 and 15 million copies.

Its been another six months since then. So the answer is yes, it does seem that your numbers are a little outdated.

your assessment would be grossly incorrect on on main level.

The main one is that you missed the core point which is we are talking about 2 INDIE...EARLY ACCESS titles selling more than the top tier beloved mega hit AAA title on all platforms.

If Those 2 INDIE...EARLY ACCESS titles did not sell more but only sold close its STILL significant

so for it to change in significance in the year of 2017 Witcher 3 would have to have sold somewhere around 50% or more of all its sales in just one year.

    Highly unlikely that happen.

But honestly, if you want to live in a world that believes nothing interesting is happening in the industry today and games like empyrion galactic survival or subnatunica are unbearably boring then I am not sure why I am wasting my time.

Because as I have illustrated a few times in the past few days I have a problem accepting the reality that some (if not many people) will fight tooth and nail to justify being unhappy

    Round and round we go...

Those two *INDIE* (that have been in EA for how long?) are *multiplayer* games. The Witcher 3 is a critically acclaimed **INDIE** single player game.

CD Projekt is an independent company that released a finished game without any crowdfunding/EA bullshit.

They created and funded their game the good old fashioned way.

So when it comes to the Witcher 3, just what is your fucking point.

    1. those two games that are in early access are selling at least as much as a super ultra mega hype marketed to death darling of the AAA market..yes..you pointing out that they are early accesss only validates my point even more.

I am spoiled with an over abundance of riches in gaming and do not have enough hours in the week to play them all.
    Life is good.
EXACTLY my problem. In fact its become rather unmanageable and I think gaming might be coming to a cross roads of over abundance. I have known this to be the case for awhile now but just yesterday it really affected me when yet another game in my collection empyrion galactic survival has had a massive update that would envelope me for weeks (to be clear that update is 2 months old but I am just now becoming aware of it)

And I recently started playing Vanilla WOW, and could not believe how game made in 2004 could be out of ballpark better than anything currently , even the newest stuff. ( yes , the blocky, outdated, buggy, 2004 version of WoW )

    How is that even possible

when you say 'anything out now' I will assume you will not consider anything other than officially labeled MMOs and any dedicated private server games are not up for conversation.

If that is the case then you very well might be right. However, I think there is a good chance you are suffering from an disproportionate level of nostalgia

    whoa dude.

Your last quip wasn't necessary especially because it could be pointed at you. He has a point, different markets for different types of games.

When companies are looking at games they aren't comparing single player games to the mobile market or the mobile market to the online segment.

They are comparing them to games in the same market.

Additionally, one doesn't compare different types of games to "different types of games". So a story driven role playing game wouldn't be compared to a Straight shooter compared to a 4X game.

If you are going to compare games compare online games with online games, single player rpg's with single player rpg's, etc.

I am not having that conversation.

I am not having the conversation of 'you cant compare MMOs to dedicated server games because its soo different with all the solo play on MMOs' arguement
and I am not having the 'oh you cant compare a AAA mega ultra super marketed hit with an early access indie hit becasue one is single player and the other has a multiplayer option'

not with you, not with them.

Mobile gaming is a an addictive disease right now, very low end cheap games making millions is not what i want to see in this business.it undermines what some studios are doing, working much harder, employing more people, creating more jobs, investing more time and money only to see some second rate mobile game triple their profits with far less effort.

So many games failing because they started with nothing but hopes and promises and asking gamer's for money. If these games secured an investor or several, took out loans you can bet the results would be far greater.Sure the old typical manner means less profits but going full out greedy ends up with less than average results.just looks at Star citizen, they have well over 100 million plus whatever hidden money they secured and have amassed very little product.

Answer?? Stop giving free money to wannabe devs and we will weed them all out of business and allow the real studios the chance to make a profit with less low rate studios trying to stick their hands into the pie.

Ark, Rust, 7 days to die, Life is Fudeal all doing just fine.

yeah I know ''buuuuuut those games are not an MMO and that matters because of reasons...'
I have to agree with the general thought here.
Developers just dont have a clue.
There are still games that are doing well in spite of the rest of the genre going to hell.
I have been enjoying FFXIV since 2.0 re launched. It's a great game.  a lot of payers like it and it's one of the more successful games. ESO as I understand is successful now, but originally wasn't. SWTOR had reinvented itslef after initial failures, however, I left a little over a year ago, not liking the direction it took.....once again, proof that something was successful and was "undone" by people that don't know what they are doing.

These are all examples of titles that had both success and failures at the hands of developers who don't and/or didn't know who they were writing for.

I'm looking for a game to have the balls to go with a $25 or even $49 sub. No cash shop cheese.  No sanctioned RMT.  Just a straight sub at a fair price.
It's never going to happen because it's a model most consumers reject. Even you are going to have high expectations for a game you are paying 25$-49$ a month for, or may have friends you want to play with not willing to pay 25$-49$ a month.

People say they hate cash shops but inevitably when I try to convince a group of friends to try a new MMO with me, it it has a sub fee they all balk.

I will do whatever. I usually pay my premium fee and nothing else for most games I play. But even I prefer freemium titles because they are simply more populated, and it's easier to convince friends to try it.

    Another comparison!!
Yes .. John Oliver is a lot of fun.

Or for that matters, movies too. The 2+ hours I am watching The Fate of the Furious (fun movie .. way more fun than hacking quests) is 2+hours I am not playing a MMO.

well, it is not up to you. And if studios cannot compete with cheap games, then they have no reason to exists.

And nobody I game with has ever balked at a sub fee.   Maybe it's just that we are older and grew up with subs but for most of us it's literally not even 15 or at most 30 minutes worth of salary.  We just avoid the cash shop stuff on principles.   Not saying we are typical, but a game doesn't need 5 million players to be successful.  A game with 25,000 subscribers at $25/month would bring in $7.5M revenue.  That's enough to support a decent sized dev team.

In fact, is there a sub-based AAA MMO being developed right now?

No. But look closely at BDO, ESO and SWL if you want to see where monetization is trending.
